I think if you are Minnesota and Fletcher you just give up, fold the team and start another expansion team in Seattle. That team has gone belly up. Playing on borrowed time

Sure doesn't seem to be a lot of solutions there.

Wild fans seem to think they'll buy out Vanek and everything will be fine...but you'd have to replace him if you buy him out (and only saves 5 million this season), and just tacks 2.5 mil onto your cap the year after. That doesn't solve any of the other problems moving forward.

In 2017/2018, they have 50 million in cap spread over 19 contracts!

With the expansion rules about NMCs, I wouldn't be surprised to see a number of players with NMC that teams might not want to protect get bought out this summer. Could flood the market and help us pick up some decent help for cheaper than normal.

https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/ntc-nmc/2016/caphit/all/defense/nmc

Anyone in here that people think could get bought out that could be a good pickup? Chara? M Staal? Wisniewski? Wideman?

yeah the thing is, the core sucks. The core is at their peak and are a bubble playoff team. You remove Vanek, you just make your team worse (he can still produce) and tack on extra cap for a player not there anymore. I coudl understand if you were a contender and bought a piece out because the rest of the core would solider on. But they dont have that luxury. No depth, no prospects and the UFA market is filled with either expensive vets or not much else (for forwards)

Spurgeon will have a NMC clause by time expansion draft happens. I could really see us landing him. Just a feeling. Give back Yak + 2nd + picks. They get cap space + open up a spot for expansion draft + get a scorer back

Not actual money. Just in terms of cap space and the team they built. They have a horrible cap situation and very few outs, plus a wave of pain coming. Joke was they should just say screw it and relocate to start all over

Yak for brodin would save them space.

I don't even want brodin.

But granlund-yak could be a neat thing.

I could see this too. Brodin is really low on my list of wants. But if it came down to it, Id do Yak for Brodin

That would be funny to see the outrage from Wild fans. I can't wait for a big oiler trade to see how much people backtrack on their out to lunch valuations.

Chara could be a good pickup. If Staal is bought out and the asking price is too high on Harmonic, maybe he'd be an option too.

I thought it was because I thought that the Dallas Stars were the Minnesota North Stars and Gold Seals before that.

RNH for Zibanejad and Ottawa 1st (11-12 overall)

Ottawa 1st for Vatanen

So basically RNH for Zibanejad and Vatanen. That gets the Oilers the PP QB defenseman and a much larger and harder to play against replacement center for RNH.

Would Chara be tho? I mean hes not exactly a good D anymore and Im guessing after next season hell be done. Wasting a spot on him is a major mistake

Staal is a better target because he can actually play. But he costs a lot of money and still only a #4 at best. Hes not anything special. If you get him for a pick sure maybe. Id aim bigger tho

Ottawa easily says no. Unlike Nuge, Zib is getting better every year and had 50-55 points this season. Sadly the difference between him and Nuge isn't an early-mid 1st anymore

Zibanejad is arguably a better player than RNH right now. Certainly brings more physicality and size while putting up similar points and he's defensively sound.

It just goes to show how the Oilers drive down the value of their players by having such redundancy on the roster. If RNH was used in a role that made the most of his skillset he would have a hell of a lot more value.

What would the Oilers have to add to make that deal happen? Reinhart? Their 2nd? 3rd and a prospect?

I think I'd rather exploit Jarmo's man crush on the Finns.

Savard
Rychel
Pick (5?)

For 3 and Yak

Make them take Fayne too (Oilers could retain a mil per) and I would love that deal, or change Rychel to Foligno and add Fayne and Korpi.
