Hayes is the better option for sure. If they would settle for a 2nd I'd do it but they likely won't. He's not worth a 1st IMO.

Laine - Scheif - Wheels
Connor - Little - Ehlers
Copp - Lowry - Tanev
Perreault - Hayes - Rosie

Could be really solid. Lowry's line would get more ice time then Hayes but that is a 4th line you can throw at any 4th line and drive play.

Hayes is not worth a 1st, but Duchene is worth a 1st ++ and Stone is worth a 1st +++?
Hayes is having a very good year. It may or may not be the new normal but it is this year, which is what we are concerned with.

If we got Hayes it would not be to centre the 4th line. He would push Little and Lowry down.

That would actually make a lot of sense

Even if we were going to go with Comrie as backup (which looks dumb to me right now), we still shouldn't let Brossoit walk. He is an RFA. You don't let him walk. You get something for him.

Seems like the Flames are making a big push for Stone.

Going to be interesting. Not interested in getting in a pissing match with teams and burning assets if it comes down to it, personally.

Flames don't have the cap space. Even TD cap space is low. I think they would need at least a little retention or have to move someone out.

Edit: I see Bennett in that offer. That would open up enough space - with not much room to spare.

I'm not sure if its more Hayes playing in a high role. He pushes play but Duchene is by far better at actually getting and setting up goals. Sure Hayes has great underlying stats but Duchenes actual stats blow Hayes out of the water. Especially when you factor in what he did on a terrible Sens roster. Whatcha his stats go night to day on CBJ.

That's a solid offer. Bennet is still pretty young and a decent middle 6 guy.

Call me crazy, but I dont think there is any way Niku plays over Chiarot if Buff is healthy. Unless the kid sets the world on fire the next few weeks. Even then, I think he would be on a short leash.

Doesnt mean I dont like him, but it would be a stretch for Maurice to not want to play Buff and Ben together when they've been solid as a pair all year.

Chiarot without Buff is a disaster, but with him, he compliments him pretty well.

Niku (to me) is filling Buff's role for now, and will be Myers replacement for next year.

We need Buff for the playoffs or we are in huge trouble.

I've been a little surprised at the way Mau has treated Niku. Not because he PB'ed him, that is no surprise. It is that he seems reluctant to use Niku on his natural left side but does not hesitate to use him on the right side. Mau's pattern has been to use young players on their natural sides until they are established. Then he may or may not move them over according to need. Notice both Laine and Ehlers on their off-sides last night - and Niku on his.

It leads me to suspect that they think of Niku as a RD. I think he replaces Myers next year.

I know Laine scored two goals yesterday, but his overall game is not good enough for him to play on the top line in the playoffs. If the Jets are serious about winning this year we need Stone.

Stone Scheifele Wheeler
Connor Little Ehlers
Copp Lowry Tanev
Laine Roslovic Laine

Very much agree with your post Mort--check out my last above post, and see if you agree with it, as an alternative to going after Stone.

Agree with most of what you say there.

Hayes would definitely not be the 4C. He would be 2C, pushing Little and Lowry down. Much as Little has been better, he is still not as good all around as Hayes has been this year.

Hayes will not be cheap to get. He would cost a fair bit less than Stone and only slightly less than Duchene, IMO. Say 1st + Stanley, or if there are 2 adds Stanley would be out and Petan would be one of them. The other would be a Moose.

He will not be either easy or cheap to re-sign either. He will cost less than Stone, but he will get paid for the good season he is having. My guess would be around 7.5

But I think he would not only cost less than Stone, he would also be a better fit for our needs. We just don't need a winger.

Only trade for Stone if he's cheap. Heard from more than one person that he doesn't want to play in Winnipeg because there are too many distractions. I don't think he signs a long term deal here.

Laine's got lots of time to get consistent before the playoffs though, no need to toss the kid off the top line if it's working

I would think about $ 7 mil per year, would sign Hayes.

Comrie looks promising though and will be cheaper. Hes had a solid year in the A.

He has been a lot better this year in the A. His AHL resume doesn't look any better than Eddie Pasquale's was at the same age. Maybe not as good. This better year is encouraging but Brossoit has been outstanding in relief. I wouldn't throw him away until sometime after he regresses. No need to rush the minor league goalies.

Yes, and that is why Duchene is worth more. I don't think Hayes falls below the 1st rd pick threshold though. Maybe the pick for him could be a 2nd with a slightly better prospect. I wouldn't turn that down. I would be all over getting Hayes if the price starts with a 2nd and the adds are from our spare parts bin.

Hayes would be much sought after most years. If this year really is a buyers market, we might get him that cheaply. That is getting into the range where I can get behind a rental. :D

I'm not sure Parsons has much value but 1st + Bennett is pretty good. Stone would make Flames pretty strong but goaltending might let them down in the PO's.

Just my gut feeling, but since it didn't happen yesterday, I think it happens Monday.
I don't know if the Sens can wait to Monday unless they know for sure they have a team hooked. At some point interested teams will circle back on secondary options and take themselves out of the running. It would be just like the Sens to have a last minute fire sale on Stone because they waited too long.

The upper part of the pay scale seems to have shifted upwards. I'm allowing for that. If Kane could get 7x7 last year, I think Hayes might get 7x7.5 this year. If he would sign for 7, so much the better.

That's kind of what I'm thinking.

On TD day there seems to be some last minute commitments by teams, but when a team has done all the arm-twisting and schmoozing weeks ago already they must be getting impatient.

I, for one have already moved on to wanting Hayes over Stone - there are several very good reasons in spite of all of Stone's wholesome goodness.
