San Jose can't retain but it would not be hard to get other teams to retain at the deadline. 50% retention would only be about $300K in real money.
He was scratched earlier in the year but right now I think he is injured.

We’d probably be better off picking off what’s left in Nashville since Trotz is a godawful GM despite being a legendary coach.

That’s a name I like. Not a flashy player but overall solid, still an RFA but the trade price would have to be right. I also wonder about his transition game as a lefty on the right side and if it would be good enough to make him a good match with Nurse.
He would be a slam dunk, home run trade target. But it's unrealistic unless Lou could be swayed.

He's a 27 year old pending UFA who is shooting well over twice his career shooting %. He had 12 goals in 168 career games entering this season. He has 9 in 34 this year.
He's a career 4th liner riding an unsustainable bump. Some team will overpay in terms of assets to acquire him and some team will overpay in terms of contract in the summer.
Sounds like he could be a future Canuck lol.

I have been following this guy and Sherwood I have in my pool. I notice they both hit a ton, but once these pluggers start getting some random goals, their hits go down so much when I stat watch. They start thinking they are hot sh** lol

I don’t know their situation- but when they had the Sabres beat writer on in the summer- he mentioned they wanted to free up some cap space. He also isn’t worth 9M.

I like that player but I'm not in favor of a LD. We don't need someone to play the right side in a pinch. We need someone to only play the right side. Kulak can play the right side in a pinch but it's not ideal. It leads to errors.
Although Stauffer a while ago was talking about names that were LD who could play right. I have my doubts that management will go that route unless we are at the deadline and that's the only option
I mean, Henrique just eats top competition minutes. Normally he saws off and outscores.
In fact he did with Skinner, too. Just the fancies are ugly.
Ironically- Lowe was very vocal on bringing Bobby Burgers on board which lead to the hiring of chiarelli and holland.
Again, my mind boggles at Skinner being signed for 1 year at the expense of cost controlled Holloway for many years
Lowe gets a bad rap as a GM. I do think he wasn't cut out for the cap era, but he was by and large one of the best GMs at the hockey trade in NHL history.
He was basically forced to trade our best player over money every year, had no scouting staff, and the team stayed competitive.
The cap effectively killed the hockey trade and made him a bad GM though.
That being said - that 05 offseason was legendary, and guess moves in that season were also legendary. Although it was a one time unprecedented scenario - essentially he had the equivalent of 50 million in cap space and 20 of the league's 30 teams were over the cap.
Kinda like slatz. He did pretty good when he was cash strapped in edmonton ss GM. But once he got blank checks in new York he kinda soiled lolol. And never came close to what he did as a coach .... mind you he did coach the greatest team ever.....

The obvious explanation is that management didn't make that bargain. They thought they could just give Broberg and Holloway hugely undervalued offers and they would just accept it. The plan was to make Holloway toil in the bottom six while Skinner played with McDavid or Draisaitl

Agree, the forward depth looks solid and diverse. Kaner will bring some of that hard ice, physical intimidation against greasy, hard game opponents. I'd be surprised if they re-visited Kostin. Maybe they add another physical depth forward but not sure they need it.
Defense wise they definitely need another top 4 blue liner. I thought they might need either a big shutdown type or possibly a puck mover. I'm leaning now to puck mover to help their transition game to offense with efficient, quick outlets and puck transportation abilities. Kulak's been a revelation stepping into the glaring 2RD hole (toi and responsibilities) so another bonafide top 4 d-man will give them strong flexibility and extend d-quality depth to critical third pair ... like we see with strong Cup contenders. Emberson looks pretty good at 3RD though not sure his offensive potential is very high. And that's okay if he can be a strong, dependable own zone player with PK responsibilities.
This team is looking solid and depth shaping up well. Finish the blueline upgrade and let's get ready to rumble.
Without looking at stats, that tells me one of two things. He’s either an above average 4th liner. Or being carried by the first and second lines. Like do you think if a third line of Skinner Nuge Brown was put together he would all of a sudden produce better results? Doubtful

Or that his skill set is more about cycling pucks and finding open ice in the offensive zone than it is about playing a defensive role and trying to find offense on his own

he took a playoff team that included Doug Weight, Bill Guerin, Ryan Smyth, Janne Niinimaa in 2000 and turned them into a Decade of Darkness mess just 8 short years later

The reason he lasted so long here though, is because he possibly had the best year in GM history
C'mon. Pronger, Peca, Roloson, Samsonov, Tarnstrom, Spacek.
It's not like it was really Lowe's fault that Weight left before that, or Guerin. Everyone knew his hands were tied when it came to real dollars to spend
Yeah, he kept getting it done when we were a farm team.
Trade for Guerin. Guerin is priced out. Weight gets almost double than what EDM offered him. Jets to the Blues. Joseph prices out to TO. Marchant gets 60 points and wants a lot.
Masterful Pronger trade, but his wife wants him to leave.
I don't hate Lowe at all like a lot of people. He did bungle the end though post cup run
I probably would have stopped following hockey closely (I started watching hardcore in 1991 - Great timing right lol) if the cap did not get implemented back in 2005. I had no hope or interest in being a feeder team to the big $$ teams

I mean even before that - every year he had a gun to his head saying he had to trade his best player or he'd lose them for nothing. Just constant. We were paying our entire team, including the concession staff, less than Mike Modano was being paid in 2004.
Just constant - trade this guy, or you lose him because someone else will pay him literally 10 to 50 times more than you can afford
Hamrlik.

Weight.
Kilger.
Poti.
Hecht.
Carter.
Niinima.
Comrie.
That's 9 top 6 players or top 4 defenseman that we lost, and would have lost for free, due to money from 2001 to 2005 that Lowe had no control over.
He won pretty much all of those trades and kept the team competitive. It's kind of remarkable, to be honest.

again, that's great he had a wonderful 2005-06...but let's not forget he was handed a darn good team to begin with and was tasked to simply survive until the 2004 lockout
he didn't "build" anything...Sather did...and when he tried, he failed (ie. post Pronger) with poor trades and poor drafting....then handed the keys to a failure (Tambo) and another failure (MacT)
