I don't think any of those 3 needed much convincing to play defense (Knob previously coached 2 of those 3) and I'm not seeing anything close to what I'd call mistake free hockey from that bunch.
To me EK is a homerun swing for a team hoping to catch lightning in a bottle, twice he was brought in to elevate an aging core and both times he seemed to do more to make those teams worse rather than better.
I just don't see the need to take such a gamble and potentially get stuck with that kind of term and money, we seem to be at a stage where it is more about a small handful of shrewd moves to supplement/support our core.
Emberson was a complete mess with his outlets to start that year. That has leveled off and he's picking his spots better now, playing within his limits. The D as a whole have also done a better job clearing/clogging net front lately, we saw that this weekend. Stecher probably played the best two games of his life.
I consider them to be mostly headache free LATELY. And for a good stretch now. There's still coverage issues in our game but that's more on the team than any individual I think.
I see no scenario where EK65 with his ability can't bring Defense on the same level as an Emberson or Stecher or Ceci. Defence is also not just played in zone, you have to consider the ability to move pucks out and retain possession in the o-zone (the BEST defence possible). EK65 right now at 34, brings elite skating and elite puck movement. I did note that he looks soft in the D-zone though, so I see where the criticisms are coming from.
We saw guys like Vinny sit in the playoffs cause he struggled moving the puck. But I bet if you look at their in-zone defence you'd get the impression that he's the better "defender" than EK65. I think alot of these guys like Risto, Murphy, that are on the market are going to bring Ceci-like contributions to this team. But we need better than Ceci. If EK65 was on the block for $5M and we can make the money work, that'd be a steal.
