Speaking of Connor Murphy…

The left two columns are a a who's who of whom not to target. the right one less so (look at the range vs. 18mph: 2.4 to 7.4/per 60 is noticeable, 0.0 (lol) to 0.5 isn't a massive difference)

Though overall I'm happy with job Kulak has done next to Nurse, and imo he highlights what has been the biggest strength of the bottom 4: Sure he's not a lockdown defenceman, but his skating alleviates so many potential forecheck opportunities for the opposition, that he and Nurse/Emberson (both +skaters in their own right) just never get trapped in their own zone.

Imo if the Oil could find a slightly bigger Kulak, they'd be set on the backend.
This doesn't mean someone like EK65, Matheson, or Murphy, but a Pettersson (PITT), Duloulin, Valimaki, Maatta type.

Personally, I really like the idea of targetting Valimaki in Utah. Sergachev more or less stole his role, and he's ended up in a bit of limbo similar to what Broberg had here behind Ekholm and Nurse. And while 26 isn't young, he'd still help bring the average age of the defence down.

Ekholm-Bouchard
Nurse-Kulak
Valimaki-Emberson
Stetcher

I like the look of that.

I disagree a bit here, there's not way you bring him at $10M, that ship has sailed for the Pens, but he doesn't just need the PP to put up points, he's an offensive defenseman who's an elite puck mover, this team is desperate for a puck move, and he's on the level of Bouchard.

It makes the entire team more effective in transition and zone exits. He has his struggles defensively and won't be much of PKer, but he would make the team much better. Stetcher to Karlsson is a massive upgrade, but the term and cap hit will be interesting to endure.
That’s probably fair. I’m mostly scared of that last year. If he had one more year after this I could live with it. Do the pens retain 50% though? If they do do we have the assets? It’s all speculation and I doubt anything happens.

Agree, I don't know that it happens, I worry about the term too.

They should claim Daniil Chayka from Vegas. We're only at 45 contracts by my count.

He's had a horrendous transition to pro hockey, but his play style seems like it fits the Oilers' zone style of defending.

Bakersfield is short of left shot defensemen and Chayka is a big, mobile defender that still offers some potential boom qualities.

Might be a very low risk, some kind of reward player? I like the idea, more depth isn't bad.

If both are available I wouldn’t be surprised if the Oilers went all in and traded for Matheson and Montembault.
I doubt they’d deal Montembault, local kid who’s held up well enough for them through a tough rebuilding phase. They just extended him and don’t really have anything to replace him with.

I don’t mind Matheson, I think he could be a a decent option but I don’t think he’s good enough to warrant dealing with Kent Hughes. He’d probably put a top pairing price tag on Matheson, guaranteed he’d be looking for similar to what we paid for Ekholm.

Man what a trade that was for Holland. Ekholm has been one of the best defenders in the league the last couple years.

And as revenge for Vegas taking Lavoie.

Also I am down for Jusso Valimaki ... he is cost controlled next year also for only 2 mill, which is important.

Marek said that Calgary was another team that was about to pull a Blues and offersheet both Holloway and Broberg this past summer.

I was wondering the other day why Calgary didn’t just do the offersheets, I mean their local Flames podcast show full of bitter turds pushed the possibility before it happened. Could you imagine, we’d have rioted.
