This is my best guess as to what the opening roster will look like... taking into account the cap space considerations, waiver exempt status of players as well as cap hits of players.

Kane-McDavid-Brown
RHN-Drai-Hyman
Janmark-McLeod ($2.1 million)-Foegele
Pederson-Ryan-Lavoie

Forwards $45,924,125

Nurse-Ceci
Ekholm-Bouchard ($3.5 million)
Kulak-Desharnais
Niemelainen

Dmen $26,275,000

Campbell
Skinner

Goalies $7,600,000

Dead cap and bonus carryover $2,766,667

Total cap: $82,565,792
Cap limit: $83,500,000

Under cap limit by $934,208

They start with a 21 man roster.

This gives the team the option of accruing cap until the deadline OR calling up either Broberg ($866,333) or Holloway ($925,000) at any time (as they are waivers exempt) and there is enough space to accommodate one of them on the roster to run a 22 man squad.

Of course they could start with both Broberg and Holloway on the roster instead of Pederson and Niemelainen BUT that would mean they would have a 21 man roster with only $680,375 in cap space... not enough to run a 22 man roster.
Oof. edm’s bottom 6 took a huge step back. Losing 2 big bodies in kostin and bjugstad hurts. maybe holland can do something at the trade deadline.

Kane’s reputation came from a money stack photo and wearing track suits to games when he was young. Then the crazy, liar ex thing happened and people try to run with it to justify what a bad guy Kane is. Since he’s been an Oiler he’s been nothing but a class act.

That’s not entirely true. There were a couple of unfortunate incidents in Buffalo.

One at a nightclub. He was charged for that one and I if I recall correctly a deal was made that if he kept out of trouble for a certain amount of time they wouldn’t move forward with the case.

I may be misremembering some of the details on that one but he definitely did some things he shouldn’t have.

I’m glad he’s turning his life around but he definitely made some poor choices in the past.

I don't think they have any choice besides upgrading at the trade deadline

Huge is a stretch. Considering Woodcroft likes playing with 9 forwards there really is one body to fill. You would think Kostin potted 20 with the way people here are acting like we are gonna miss him. Realistically Holloway or Lavoie has a good chance in filling the hole.

It's almost as if some people saw value in his physical play as well.

Kostin scored 11 goals in 57 games in limited WoodShaft minutes. So yes, he has the potential to be just what you describe. That probably plays a part in why some folks do beleive this club will miss a guy like that in the bottom six, along with his other valuable attributes. Lavoie doesn’t play the same type of game as Kostin so no way he fills that hole and Holloway, well we can hope…

My guess is that if there was a poll here... it would be a pretty decent split between people who would want Kostin at $2 million for 2 years vs McLeod at $2 million for 2 years (if you could only choose one or the other).
Sadly that ship has sailed. And we will still be paying 2M for a guy that has about the same production but plays a much smaller game.

Feels like a lot of people forget Kostin and McLeod are the same age. Difference being McLeod got drafted to a team with a horrendous bottom 6 while Kostin got drafted to a team winning Cups and pushing with an extremely deep lineup up until recently. One of them was given far more opportunity than the other.

I’m someone who would take Kostin over McLeod in a heartbeat at the same salary, and now it’s looking like McLeod is going to cost us even more than what Klim got while (in my opinion) providing significantly less for a team who is trying to win playoff games.

The people talking about McLeod and potential need to look at Klim the same way. Watching him build confidence over the year and begin showing physical dominance all over the rink was special. With a bit more confidence in his role, he could become a real solid middle 6 type of guy. I don’t think I can say the same about mcleod — RNH lite lite lite.

This top heavy team has become even more top end dependent....
Back to trying to wind 6-5 instead of winning 4-2.
Were still good enough to be top 8.
Our bottom 6 was solid last year. And if anything, our biggest needs are still 'top' as in a 2nd pair dman, and a sure-fire starting goalie

Desi need to be number 7 and a good vet in his place, then a goalie would be nice and a good 3C to control that line and clear. Its still possible but harder now and more expensive in assets than if the move(s) were make two weeks ago or more.
