Rumors Proposals Thread Post Deadline Apocalypse 3rd Times A Charm Stu Stu Stupider Management May the Schwartz be with You

Yowsers... that still feels like a lot for Marner. How do we fit all of that in?

I presume you are trading Bouchard, or do you think a bridge is realistic?
Marner is making 10.9M so 12M is a marginal increase.

Bouchard get moved or bridged 8Mx2. Oilers won't be able to keep Kane, Arvid, Henrique and Frederic. That leaves about 2.5M for an upgrade on goalie

Marner would cost 13 minimum, the Oilers could do it but you'd basically have to gut the bottom 6 and bridge Bouchard to a 2 year deal. I only entertain this because they were willing to go after Rantanen for probably the same money.

Marner (13) McDavid (12.5) Hyman (5.5)
RNH (5.125) Drai (14) Savoie (0.9)
Kostin (1) blank (1.5) Podkolzin (1)
Kapanen (1) Philp (1) Brown (1)

Ek (6) Bouchard (8)
Nurse (9.25) Walman (3.4)
Kulak (2.7) blank (1)
blank (0.9)

Goalie (3)
Back Up (1)

Campbell buyout (2.3)

= 95.15 ... just a bit under the projected 95.5 cap.

You would have to get rid of Henrique, Arvidsson, Kane cleanly (no buy outs) and let Frederic walk.

The bottom 6 is thinner, but really not that much different from the bottom 6 we have now, as is the bottom 6 doesn't do much minus Perry who's really old.

Because Alberta has lower taxes than Ontario, at roughly 13 mill/year he'd make approx 725k more per year here but presumably loses that 8th year.

With Marner and Bouchard on the team will look like a backward move next season with next to nothing on the bottom 6 but the Oilers would be laughing in 2026-27 when the salary cap is 105M and teams with internal cap are struggling with 90M.

You'd have to have certainty that Arvidsson and Henrique would waive their NMCs because you can't buy them out in a Marner scenario. Their money has to come clean off the cap (all of it). So you'd have to have deals for them prior to July 1 (and for Kane also) and then and only then is it a viable option. The acquistion "cost" for Marner in that sense could be three 2nd round picks (required to get rid of Henrique, Arvidsson, and Kane).

Personally I doubt it, but they did try for Rantanen and it does seem like Marner's relationship in Toronto may be deteriorating.

Team has next to nothing on the bottom 6 right now. Henrique isn't playing like a 3M player. Perry is arguably our best bottom 6er.
Kane would have to be moved for a league min player or pick.

Would need to be a paycut for Marner to get a chance at the cup.
10x7yrs with NMC and a guarantee to play on a line with Hyman and McDavid
Marner(10), Bouchard(8) and McDavid(10) take a deferred deal, the Oilers could extend Frederic.

Kane, Arvid and Henrique are traded

Stauffer said today on his show that he fully expects the Oilers to add at least a 1B in the Summer.

Seravalli said how about a full on #1 Goalie?
Man, that's not what I heard. Stauffer said he expects the Oilers to look for a number 3 organizational goalie. And my understanding of that is someone who can challenge Pickard for the backup role, not Skinner.

What? No he said a 1B goalie. Let me find the tweet

If I’m McDavid I’m toying with the idea of holding out a little bit to light a fire under managements ass. Like even if I’m 100% signing, I’m gonna make them sweat a little get and get their asses seriously to work.

Oilers management would probably fumble it and just trade me in that scenario though lol

Let's just see how the playoffs go.. this fan base might not be too eager to give Bouchard over 6M per depending upon how we exit.
Effectiveness of Frederic vs Kane vs Arvidsson would be good to judge in playoffs as well.
Henrique might bring it in playoffs after snoozing through regular season ala Peca of olden days

I just listened to the show. He said, verbatim: "I do expect Edmonton to engage in signing an organizational number 3 goalie who has played in the National Hockey League in the last couple years." That is verbatim.

Edit to add: he went on to say "how bout a guy who can compete with Pickard for the 1B job."

How is that a #3 goalie???

This person got the quote wrong. Listen to the show.

Edit: Taken out of context, this looks like Stauffer is saying the Oilers are going to bring in a guy to challenge Skinner. But he actually said a guy to challenge Pickard, who is not a 1B in pretty much everyone's mind. Basically, Bob said the Oilers will look for a new backup goalie lol.

@Jimmi McJenkins @Canovin

Yeah... Ok, theoretically possible, but seems like a fantasy-fan stretch. Hard to imagine them jettisoning Henrique, or getting rid of Kane cleanly for example.

That bottom six is SUPER thin. Yes, way thinner than what we should have by the time playoffs roll around this year. A $1.5M 3C that just materializes via UFA is going to be... not a contributor.

And we still wouldn't have a goalie unless we get exceptionally lucky at $3M. Who's going to sign for that? Jake Allen? Vladar? Ugh...

Not really the approach I would take... but then again there are exactly zero difference-making goalies set to hit UFA, so we're going to have to actually trade for a good one (a scary thought in itself) or settle yet again for scraps.

I too listened to the Pod this morning (and maybe I was still half asleep but) that’s what Stauff said but then Frank said they needed to get a more veteran goalie that could play 1A/B, allowing Skinner to continue to develop (but a stronger insurance for position than just a 1B, in case the shit continues to hit the fan).

Serevalli did say that, and I'm glad he did. He wasn't having any of that nonsense.
