But even more so, guaranteed contracts that force teams to kill cap space to shed bad deals. How about the players just let these go away so that trades are easier to make if that is what agents want.

That is true, but what it did was to make it tough for many teams to keep their best players.

I suspect that the luxury tax system mighty not hurt the Oilers as much today as it would have under Pocklington or the EIG. They might even benefit somewhat. But it would be bad for the league I think.
