Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | If Babcock is Our New Coach Will Players Want to Come Here?

Because he’s still eating cap this year and will take playing time away from an actually useful RD.

This year isn’t some throw away year where you can wait out another bad contract.
They're clearing over $4m in cap space and $9.25m per year over the next 3 years!!!! How is this a bad thing? Jump for joy that Nurse's contract is gone and work out the defense pairings after.

I don't know how any Oilers fan can be opposed to this unless they, one, want Nurse to stay or, two, think the Oilers can get real value for his full contract,

I think you can plug a different hole.

Maybe not hit a home run but get something somewhat useful.

I don’t want Nurse but I also don’t want Risto.

There are definitely some who believe the latter, especially after yesterday.

I think there's enough smoke around Nurse and Ristolainen that we can probably assume some amalgamation of that idea is on the table, but with some sort of hold up. Most likely that the Oilers are still being asked to retain salary and they don't want to do that.

Funny stuff.
PHI is likely looking for a 1st+ for Risto making 5M and on an expiring deal.

Nurse has negative value.

PHI would be pretty dumb to make a straight swap.

Maybe a 3 way deal where Risto ends up in OTT and Nurse is PHI.
How does Nurse have negative value?

Because he is overpaid and has demanded out.
He has negative value to 20+ GMs easily but all it takes is 1 or 2 to get bidding war going.

Not according to every single insider.

Nurse has better metrics and underlying analytics than Seth Jones did at the time he was traded to Florida. There was also a lower salary cap at the time. By year 2 of him being moved- he'll only be taking up 8% of the cap- which was a 7M dman last year.

Not sure if Nurse was better. Jones had far worse teammate quality and was actually playing top pair minutes still and not doing that badly on a bad Chicago team. He never dragged down teammates like Nurse has pretty consistently through his career.

Jones absolutely stepped it up when he finally got a chance to win on a good team. Nurse has had a chance to step up for years, and has usually ended up a handicap and huge distraction for our coach to figure out how to shelter.

Yep, that's my guess. I think Bowman would immediately jump on the trade with glee if the Flyers don't ask for retention but I bet they want at least some retention if they're giving up an expiring contract and 2nd pairing Dman.

Mentally prepared for our management and Katz to think that Babcock is a cure-all for this team, and his magic coaching powers will make something close to status quo infinitely better next season.

My final roster prediction for the week ahead:

-Nurse for Seeler (props to Bowman if he can extract a late pick out of PHI here too but not holding my breath)
-2nd 2026 for Cossa (signed $1.5M/2 years)
-2nd 2027 and 3rd 2026 for DeBrusk and a 5th
-Dach extended $1.25M/2 years
-Mikheyev signed $4.25M/5 years

Team keeps 1st 28 + Howard, both valuable trade chips for a goalie if (when) they need one still come Dec/Jan, and runs with:

RNH-McDavid-Hyman
DeBrusk-Drai-Savoie
Pod-Dickinson-Mikheyev
Dach-Samanski-Frederic
Janmark

Ekholm-Bouch
Walman-Murphy
Seeler-Emberson
Regula

Jarry
Cossa

$1.5 mill cap still, so $3M for a goalie upgrade at the deadline ($8M total when Jarry is included)
Nothing entirely out of left field or egregiously terrible, just small bad decisions and poor line choices and the whole thing feels bleh.

If that is the best our management can do, all of McDavid, Drai, and Bouch should request a trade.
