We're more or less on the same wavelength, and I'm arguing over a minor thing, but it's that point of "we don't know how close he is to practicing with the team", I disagree with. We may not know how close he is, but it's safe to assume how far.

He just got back on the ice and when it's a major player in a Canadian market we'd hear whispers that they'll be in practice within a week or two. That hasn't been the case with Kane; It's a very safe bet to say he's not a week or two from rejoining the team in practice. And if that's not the case, then he is 100% out of time to expedite his return during the regular season.

Especially as this entire year the Oil have been playing it conservative on injuries. I mean, Regula has been here how long and is still on season opening LTIR?
If that's the case, then there really shouldn't be an issue, he'll stay on LTIR till the end of the season. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think Kane is going to rock the boat and try and come back with one week left in the season.

i believe that too, I hope we're both right. Kane coming back a week or 2 early and basically screwing over his teammates doesn't seem like a good move for him at all. I don't see what that does for him at all.

Seth Jones sucks
I bet your view of him changes after you see him play for Florida. The guy always had the tools and the talent, he chased money and ended up on a bad team. Jones, as the number 3 D on FLA, behind Ekblad and Forsling, is pretty damn good imo. At 7 million, I bet he ends being a really nice piece for the Panthers for the next 5 years.

$77,274,167. That's next year's payroll as it stands.

Assuming the $95.5m cap, you're looking at just over $18m to re-sign Bouchard, Emberson and/or any of the UFAs you wish to keep around.

Bouchard alone is going to take at least half of that. How are you coming into camp next season with a markedly improved roster if you're filling vital roles in the bargain bin again.

This off-season is the one where we want to convince Connor McDavid to retire here. I'm not confident that you're putting your best foot forward there if you're walking into July 1st with less than $1m per available roster spot.
9-10M to fill mostly depth positions isn't much of an ask. As I said if they want different elements it would requiring shipping out players like Kane, Henrique, or Arvidsson who are all making middle 6 money on expiring contracts, if they want a different element to the team.

The numbers don't look bleak at all like you're trying to make them.

Seth Jones sucks

On HFOil, we are only allowed to say a player sucks once he plays for the Oilers. Rest of the time, he's a

Haven't you clued in by now? ;)

$9 - $10m? Even optimistic projections for those extensions look like $9m + $2m. Add in Gibson at $6.4m and that's just shy of the whole $18m.

Yes, I understand that moving out players will be necessary to make the salary work, regardless of the direction the team chooses to go. But that also means you're opening up additional roster spots that need to be filled.

So, again, how are you markedly improving that roster if you're filling half of it with guys making league minimum?

So what is the real deal with Kane??? I just read a report that said he is insisting on getting back on the ice ASAP and that as a result, as reported by Friedman, the Oilers are looking at moving him. If that's the case all I can say is CRAP!

He is clearly out until Playoffs and the team is playing games with the media so they don't get in trouble. It's been like this since day 1.

If the Oilers truly want to trade Kane (which makes sense for next year) Maybe they are blaming this as the reason

Jackson didn't confirm anything - this is the full quote:

This is to @McTonyBrar and others who post things without context. Can you actually post the whole quote or a link of the direct source next time instead of just assuming what was said or posting the musings of random nobodies on twitter who are also misquoting the source. This happens a lot, you guys really need to fix this because you keep posting misleading things.

In this case, Jackson did NOT confirm that Kane is out for the regular season as posters earlier in the thread stated. He's as clueless as anybody about Kane's intentions, kind of incredible that we're now 5 days from the deadline and management still has no clue if they'll have any cap space for the deadline or maybe they and every single insider are fooling all of us and they do know. Guess we'll find out soon either way.

This would be more of an offseason move but I’d be inquiring about Askarov on the Sharks. He’s played some great hockey down on the farm this season. He was recalled earlier in the season and had an elite first few games before losing all of his confidence (easy to do that on a bad team) and being sent down.
I believe he needs a good mentor/coach as he has stated that it was difficult to adjust to culture up here as opposed to Russia. Bring in Khabibulin as a goalie coach (former Oilers goalie and has been a goalie coach in the KHL) to work with him.
This is a goalie who has the potential to be an elite starter in the league with the right coach imo

Oiler management isn't real good at "fooling others." Agree that when you are a week away from the TDL that you should have some idea about the available cap space. This Kane situation has been very confusing for even so called hockey experts.

I'm starting think we add a 5/6 blue liner like a Mario Ferraro and a 3rd line ish guy like Donato. Just a gut feeling. (To me it's stupid, because our biggest hole is a winger for Leon)

I don't think there is much available for a top 6 forward? The biggest fail was this Drai winger situation. Jeff Skinner lasted 1 period vs the Canes. He ain't the answer........................

It is frustrating that guys like Askarov, Logan, Hill etc. all seemed to be nowhere on the Oilers radar in the past several years even when the Oilers goaltending situation was unsettled. As someone else posted yesterday, leaving something critical to success to the last moment (when you don't even know what cap space you have to deal with) certainly leaves something to be desired. Where was the scouting staff on goaltenders like this?

You could have probably stopped after five words.

If this Kane situation hamstrings their TDL someone needs to lose their job.

Bingo. Our management is reactionary instead of being visionary. We also don’t set high standards for various positions in our organization (any competent hockey org would have canned Schwartz ages ago).

1.I was in Rexall Place for most of Devan Dubnyk’s starts as an Edmonton Oiler. So, I lived through the exciting early days and the heady 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons when it looked as though this franchise had developed their very own home-grown starting goaltender for the first time since Grant Fuhr. But then it all fell apart. 2013-14 paled comparison to the couple campaigns previous for Dubnyk. His SV% went from .921 to .850 and fans panicked. Seemingly every night on our drive home we would hear callers on the post-game show lament that “Dubnyk had to have that one”, “We will never win with him” and “Trade him”. Sound familiar? The was the seed that sprouted the infamous quote from Craig MacTavish: “If you have to ask the question, you know the answer.” Not long after, Dubnyk was indeed traded.

As we know now, after Dubnyk hit rock bottom, he then more than resurrected his career. He went on a run that delivered six consecutive seasons with SV%’s over .913. Dubnyk won a Masterton and earned four all-star berths. He was a Vezina finalist in 2014-15. And as for the franchise that had drafted and developed Dubnyk, it became a depressing “what could have been.” Fast forward to 2025 and Stuart Skinner. That is how long it took the franchise to develop another goalie close to Dubnyk’s quality. I wish Oilers fans would reflect on that experience with Dubnyk vis-à-vis Stuart Skinner. Remember: Dubnyk was 26 when he hit his rough spot. Which is coincidentally exactly how old Stuart Skinner is today. He is still a relatively young goalie, on a value contract.

Yet, almost nightly, these days, I read calls for the Edmonton Oilers to replace Skinner.

Well…be careful what you wish for.

Completely ignoring the fact Dubnyk reinvented himself after falling rock bottom and having Sean Burke perform CPR on his career

Think Schwartz can do that?

Why is media so fixated on sheltering Skinner? We just want a goalie to push him [maybe even usurp] because his inconsistency is costing the Oilers points. Plus Dubnyk is way more athletic than Skinner. Skinner is just big and heavy.

Feels like a troll of the organization and a f*** you to the fans because it's funny? I don't really know, but it's f***ing annoying.

I love the "but look at Dubnyk" as if Dubnyk didn't stare the end of his career in the face and finally make changes to his game, with the help of Sean Burke as you said.
