So I'm trying to figure out if I finally understand the accrued cap space/LTIR situation we face. Please let me know if I have this all correct.

Without having to put Kane on LTIR, we currently have 946K in cap. If we let that accrue until the deadline (and not use our LTIR), we can take on about 4.3m in AAV salary. If teams retain 50%, that could be 8.6m. If we really paid through the roof and got double retention on everyone, that's 17.2m?

Then, if we wanted to add more, because the cap space has already been accrued, we could LTIR Kane until the playoffs and could add an additional 5.125 in salary?

Obviously not all of that would happen, but if we wanted to go insane at the deadline, we could find a way to bring in 22.3m in salary? Or do I need more sleep? lol
I think the 946k is with a 22 man roster which includes Kane, who won’t be playable, so really it’s a 21 man roster. I believe we would have about 170k in cap space with a 23 man roster which technically includes Kane on IR so really it would be a 22 man roster.

I may be mistake but I’m pretty sure if Kane is on IR he still occupies a roster spot and definitely his full cap still counts.

If the team designates Perry in favour of Lavoie then they would have about 500k in cap space to start the year.

Many of you are just nuts. Nurse isn't going to be worth his $9.25M and has flaws, but you treat him like he's barely an NHL player and that's just not the case, and if you think it's the case you're an idiot.

Not be worth his contract and not being an NHL player are VERY different things.
Think we unfairly attach at lot of Holland's managing errors to Nurse. If we weren't paying rough $6.5M (or 7.5% of the cap) to buyouts and performance bonus carryovers, the couple of million overpay to Nurse wouldn't look so bad.

Absolutely, you're spot on. He had a monster year and was a pending UFA right when a bunch of "similar" guys got massive pay days as UFAs, Holland was too eager to give him big money, so here we are.

I expect him to be better this year, I think Coffey can help him be better and more consistent. I want him to get his swagger back.

you are underestimating Hamilton.

my Girlfriend of 14 years is from Hamilton as is her family. They are leaf fans. most the of the GTA and surrounding areas (including Hamilton) are leaf fans. from city centre to city centre they are 68 KM apart and the way the area is populated its basically a giant city and in no comparable to Edmonton and Calgary.

Could a Hamilton team succeed? maybe, the league is harder to get into today than it was i
n the 70's. I don't see many hamiltonians dropping the leafs to cheer for a Hamilton team. Hell Ottawa has almost failed many times over the years and struggled to get a fanbase and take ground from Montreal. Ottawa had to wait 15 years for the kids who were fans to grow up and spend money. Would a Hamilton team have that patience?
That's because that's the only game in town. They have a farm team that they support over the leafs farm team. they have a CFL team they support over the Toronto team. I also recall, long ago, there was market research done showing that an NHL team would be successful in Hamilton (I think that was back when the Blackberry dude wanted an NHL team), They certainly have the population.

For starters, very sorry to hear of your girlfriend and her family and their affliction. You are indeed a brave soul to insert yourself into that mess, so kudos. As for Hamilton having an NHL team, why not? I think if Ottawa can support one, then Hamilton should surely be able to as well. Plus, it has the potential to get ugly between the Laffs and Hamilton during games, so there's always that.

I'd like for him to keep his game simple. Whenever he's on the ice trying to replicate Cale Makar, then we have a problem. Two major things he needs to stop doing is:
1) Screening our goalie when an opponent shoots the puck and
2) Stop skating back from the blue line towards the Oilers own net and attack the opposing player who has the puck when they enter the Oilers zone to disrupt the offensive attempt.

Too many times last season (especially during the playoffs) did I see Nurse make those mistakes. I hope Emberson will be able to calm his game down, but its also rather frustrating that a player who's highly paid can't be the one to stabilize the pair he's on. Here's hoping whatever injury was nagging at him from last year will heal up 100% when the regular season starts.

I'm thinking there is next to zero chance we make that RD trade that we need until close to the deadline.

I don't see why anyone would sell now. They have to lose hope first. Or, maybe if someone demanded a trade it could happen. That hasn't happened

I see some of you are talking about Nurse. I strongly believe that a good partner for him could fix him. I bet that having to play with Ceci or worse has made bad habits creep into his game

He can play better, but he has many things you just cant teach. He carried our defense for awhile, and im not going to write him off because some analytics don't like him.
The funny thing is his analytics are more than fine.

The only ones that aren't are relative stats because he's getting compared to McDavid+Ekholm+Bouchard getting a huge offensive zone push. It should be pretty obvious that his numbers are going to look a whole lot worse than them. That doesn't mean they aren't still well above average though.

Ya his overpay is arguably smaller than Neal’s buyout money (like 1.5 million overpaid vs 1.92 to Neal). It’s actually a pretty insignificant amount when you consider guys like Nuge and Hyman are underpaid by a larger amount than Nurse is overpaid.

I swear he smirked when he got asked about how long he’d be out. I’m fully expecting a Stone situation

So what does he have that you can't teach?
Nurse will be fine playing 18-20 mins if you get him the right partner. And his play will substantially improve in the postseason if he's paired with an effective transporter of the puck. That is everything you need to know about finding a partner for Nurse. He doesn't need a huge point producing partner, he doesn't need an elite shutdown partner. He needs someone who can retrieve and effectively make controlled zone exits. I'll keep repeating it over again until it happens and if they find Nurse the wrong partner I'll have to start over again.

I'm so happy for Adam Larsson, he got his contract, and the rumors of him coming to Edmonton can stop. I've been very vocal all along that Larsson would be a horrible fit to round out that second pairing. Because he isn't now or has he ever been an effective transporter of the puck. That's not his game.

Larsson in Edmonton would have been a big ticket that wasn't in a position to do well with Darnell Nurse. If anything the shortcomings of Larsson are comparable to the shortcomings of Nurse and Ceci.

Three stylistically different types of defenseman but none are effective transporters of the puck. The higher the level of competition, particularly against heavy forechecking lines with skill, the worse all three perform because there's little chance of a controlled transition of the puck out of the defensive zone heading up ice for a scoring opportunity at the other end. They can get possession but they can't make controlled exits.

It's clear as day and I don't know what some posters on this board are seeing or what they expect. I see so many poor opinions from the few podcasts that I actually tune into now and again. I want to dispel one critically wrong notion out there that Nurse can't skate because for a big defenseman he's mobile... it's a little maddening to tell you the truth.
