Wonder why Calgary keeps targeting Russian players. Do they think they want to play in Calgary? For a team that continually keeps losing players (mainly Americans), its a pretty dumb strategy. Conroy is a dummy.
They figure they might be the only ones who don't think their rink is a POS.

Here's me hoping we make the right splash. It just seems odd to me that Holland said he's okay with our 6D earlier today. He literally got 75% off Henrique to save some more cap space, and then Holland tries to trade Ceci and the 1st round pick for Tanev days ago. Then he's going to use whatever asset he has to get a 7th pairing depth veteran d man when Buchnevich, Duclair, Guentzel, etc are still available? It just doesn't add up.

This roster still has Janmark, Ryan, and Brown on it. Buchnevich, Toffoli, Eberle, or Duclair all out there. If for some reason you really think there’s nobody out there better than Ceci, then go nuclear up front.

Holland is definitely cooking up something. Bringing in Henrique and Carrick (2 forwards who log a hell of a lot of PK minutes) is basically the kiss of death for a couple of our lesser forwards who kill penalties. Mind you, we can waive players but the retention on Henrique and Carrick also leads me to believe that Holland has one last trick up his sleeve.

I find it odd that holland is looking for a “7th defender” when he has Broberg in the AHL..

I sure hope so. It's his last year of being GM. Surely, he'd wanna go out making a huge splash rather than go for something minor as shit in a 7th d man. I'm hoping to wake up in the morning or Friday and seeing Pavel Buchnevich has been traded to the Edmonton Oilers

I'm not too butt hurt about the cap circumvention, I figure we will be doing something similar if we hire Mark Hunter as our GM, I find the CHL GMs who have a lot of success tend to be pretty cutthroat and use every advantage they can.

Even as we are now with Vegas making all these moves I believe we are capable of beating them, but they are definitely leading the arms race and each subsequent good move they do obviously lowers our odds and improves theirs.

I'm just hopeful that Holland can pull off a proper upgrade on Ceci that meshes well with Nurse and then I think we are ready for war.
The advantage we will never be able to compete with is location. You have players with NMC/NTC clauses who will force a trade to a no state tax, warmer destination. Happened twice already today.

That’s why they need to factor those into the next CBA. I think GMs may vote that way next time to be honest.

Holland would look pretty dumb (imo) to get double retention by including a 1st... just to then have excess cap space floating around doing nothing after this deadline.

I expect another bigger move than a 7D which really would require no cap space at all... you could simply waive (send down) Holloway for that and free up the cap needed for a 7D.

By then they'll have won 3 cups with rosters 100M over the cap and 12 players on LTIR, what do they care?

Yeah I think everyone just doing their jobs to the best of their abilities is what you should expect. People have all summer and the rest of their lives to hang with buddies. If the GM isn't creating the best possible team, he's doing a disservice to the fans and his employer. Everyone is making millions to win hockey games. Some people clearly take it more serious than others, and are willing to bend the rules to the max to try to win.

I agree but wouldn’t Browns bonuses be paid off and not carried over to next year?

If the Oilers are considering this year and next as all in years for the cup, they should still be in on Buchnevich or Guentzal. The two biggest threats to the Oiler's chances in the west both loaded up today(Vegas/Colorado), and if there isn't a replacement for Ceci to be had out there, then they need to maximize their depth at forwards to compensate for when Mcdavid/Drai get the usual double-team treatment.

The last few weeks we've already seen a bit of a reversion to all the team's offense coming off Mcdavid's stick again. I'd rather not see them get bounced out of the playoffs again because their opponents shut down or manage the Oilers top two players, and the supporting cast comes out unproductive to their counterparts like they did against Colorado's overwhelming attack two years ago, and Vegas's superior depth last year.
I don't think a winger upgrade can paper over the lack of a Ceci replacement, unless that player is a possession monster (flirting with 60% CF%), if push comes to shove we might have to try and change the nature of the pairing. Like the Nurse- Ceci pairing has gone into a lot of tough defensive match-ups in the playoffs and keeps coming out on the losing end, for example I would consider Colin Miller a modest downgrade on Ceci, but if we ran a Nurse - Miller pairing the transition game would likely improve and we'd likely be on the attack more often, even if the actual defending might be even worse, we would be better equipped to hide from that weakness rather than play into it.

In terms of our prior playoff losses I think you learned the wrong lessons from them. The Colorado series was lost entirely by the gap in quality between their D and our D, they were also absolute beasts on transition that we could not hope to match, our ability transition from offense to defense and defense to offense was nowhere close to them. With the VGK loss that was primarily a goalie gap, but they also laid a whooping on us 5 v 5 mostly from the Eichel line beating on every line (though McLeod did alright into the match-up), it also highlighted our buy-in to a team defensive game didn't match their buy-in and they exploited holes in our man-to-man defensive structure.

I wish I could like this twice.

I have no idea how you would articulate that into the CBA. Plus the players like the choice and the league likes the teams the players choose.

True.... I guess some of that cap space could be applied to Brown's bonus... so not as much cap space would be tied up next season, Kinda goes against the "All In" philosophy this year though.

Who knows what the team will be like next year at this time... could be major injuries... team could be in a worse position in the standings etc.

Things look pretty good right now... so GO FOR IT.

I'd like to see the removal of all No Trade and No Move clauses, along with guaranteed contracts, and don't penalize teams for buyouts.

In exchange give the players the removal of the salary cap and escrow replaced by a form of luxury tax.

Its would make sense. There's no reason to pay a premium for all that retention if you aren't planning on using all of the cap.
