Parayko is an off season type target. St. Louis is unlikely to tie up a retention slot for him so there is some significant cap gymnastics that would have to happen never mind the mix of assets it would take. Even if it were remotely possible there is a real danger that it would take significant time and energy to negotiate such a deal and then fall through leaving the Oilers at the deadline with few other options.

Generally I'd agree, however Holland did just make that same deal including multiple years of retention last deadline with Ekholm.

Lol.. I always try and tell people about the famous shock treatment episode, to those poor souks who've never experienced the magic of Cheers ! Lol
One of the classics, along with the monkey delivering the mail 👏
Do NOT call Cliff Claven a monkey!! (joking, I recall the episode). :)

Yeah there is really no way to make the cap work without a decent amount of retention on Parayko unless we just decide to NOT get anyone else.

Yes if we didn’t just see almost an exact deal last year I would agree with the OP. But being KH’s last year and him wanting to leave on top I could see it being a genuine possibility. Whether it happens is another thing but I guaranty there has been talks.

Except much different term left and it was only 4%
Are you assuming that if the Oilers were going to trade for Parayko they would ask for a 50% retention? Because they might, but they won't get it.

I don't think Parayko is a great fit right now, but it's not impossible.

*cough cough* ahmmm, Tyson Barrie. Thank you.

Of course not, but there would need to be at least 25% retention if we also want to add a top 6 forward too, its just extremely hard to fit without a big shakeup of the roster.

Ceci and Foegel out would leave them with over 2 million to grab a Foegele replacement and another piece. Could still fit in two 6 million cap hits with 75% retention, or a couple 3m hits with 50% retention. Things are definitely possible this year with the accrued cap.

The retention was 4% for three years and it seems that Nashville was at least looking to move on from Ekholm at the time. St. Louis might have to retain more for much longer. That said the real concern is that it is hard to imagine that Parayko is a guy they want to move on from right now. They may see this differently in the future. But it would probably take time to convince them.

Agreed - unlikely we get Parayko and anything else aside from scraps outside of double retention. Also unlikely we get Parayko at all.

But I don't think the restraint is Cap, but rather other resources. Keep in mind we 2.3 million in real cap space with 60/82=73% of that salary accrued already. Which by accrual equates to around 8 million in contracts we can absorb approximately. We can also increase that by whatever we can push off the roster. Hence why talks have been we can acquire 3-4 players.

But I do think Parayko alone is better than almost everything else on the market.

If we send Ceci back they would need to retain around 1.5 mill on Parayko for us to not be at 0 cap space. That would mean them retaining for 6 years past this year. The cost of that alone would be astronomical.

Not that he's going to get move this week, but there have been reports for at least a year that they're considering moving him. I remember specifically hearing Calgary was interest around the time he hurt his back. His name has been out there.

In the offseason, I agree, but right now, I don't think it would be as violent as you think.

It's just not going to be cheap.

Panthers have beaten the Oilers twice this year and just got better. They have enough assets to add another impactful player. Parayko on his own won't be enough.
