So do we all remember all the way back to the season that the pandemic cut short? I remember that a goalie was an UFA and we didn't want to bring him back at all. This was his stat line then:

'19-20 37 games started 19-12-6 2.95GAA 0.902sv% 1SO

Now here is the guy that is currently being trashed:

'20-21 25 games started 13-13-0 3.17GAA 0.899sv% 0SO

Slightly worse save % and a higher GAA (I personally consider GAA to be more of a team stat than just a goalie stat).

If we somehow got both of these guys going at their best, goaltending would not be a weakness for us. Not elite, but not garbage either.

Smith '20-21 30 games started 21-6-2 2.31GAA 0.923sv% 3SO
Koskinen '19-20 34 games started 18-13-3 2.75GAA 0.917sv% 1SO

If Koskinen does return, hopefully he has worked hard on his game this offseason and is ready to come in and have a solid season.

You know what failed to get us into the second round this year?

Our lack of offense.
What about the year before? Lots of offense, no goaltending.

My concern with Smith, and I'm really surprised that this isn't talked about more isn't whether or not he'll be able to maintain last year's level of play. It's whether or not he'll be healthy. If he's not healthy then Koskinen is the starter. And if Koskinen is the starter you can say goodbye to any season success. And before people spout "You're just doomposting" at me, remember how Smith was not healthy to begin last year and has a lengthy injury history. He'll be 40 by the time the regular season is over.

I agree that goaltending is an area of concern, but our goaltending last year wasn’t the reason we didn’t make it to the second round, scoring 8 goals was the reason

BTW

There is speculation that Lags may end up back in Sweden if he does not make the opening day roster

Welcome to the dog days of August. Where there is really f*** all the oilers can do

What are the chances Yamamoto gets signed? We have used up 80% of klefboms LTIR

Not sure why there is such a big panic about Yamamoto not being signed yet. Clearly his camp wants more than the Oilers want to give. There’s no way he should be signing for the same as Comtois, even with a ‘better’ draft pedigree.

Maybe Foegele was also brought in as insurance in case he held out, maybe he gets shopped.

I don't find a more suitable thread easily so...

I still don't know if the team is better than last year (well I feel it may actually be), but it's a very interesting team at least. It'll be interesting to see if they finally get the bottom-6 going this season, there's a lot of changes in that area. It's also nice to see if Barrie and Nurse keep doing what they did last year and if Keith still has enough to suprise us fans positively.

McDavid, Drai and epecially Pulju are still young so I expect them to keep developing even better. Very interesting to see maybe Hyman, McDavid and Pulju together. Hopefully Yamamoto gets back to where he was last year and maybe we could get some of the DRY magic back.

Will there still be some moves, maybe in the goalie section? Will Tippet's contract be extended? A very interesting season ahead.

Wait you think an average college goalie (let's just imagine you were one) can put up .900 in the NHL? lol
Tom Barrasso would like to say Hi . He skid college and went from the high school to the NHL . Point is it was a different game . Back in my time great goalie put up .880 . I don't really know how good I could off been . Got myself into some shit and that was that . On a side note I played against a guy that was on Team Canada Olympic Team before NHLer were playing in the Olympics and stop him on 3 break aways in one game . But as I mention different game , shitter equipment everyone moved slow shot softer . I did have a NHLer take some shots on me and I will say they hurt . I never was hurt by a shot outside of that damn Flames player shooting shots at me . 4 shot 4 bruise so i am not sure of would've had the drive to face those night in night out

There is more to a team than goaltending. We are better at forward and with our defensemen than last season.

Nurse-Barrie (same)
Keith >>> Any of our LD not named Nurse last season
Bouchard >>> Bear offensively
Ceci >>> Larsson offensively
Koekoek/Russell (same)

We may struggle a little more defensively without Larsson, but we are MUCH better in terms of puck movement and having threats to score from the point than we've been in eons.

Out Bear 43gp. 2-6-8 (all at ES)
In Bouchard 14gp. 2-3-5 (1-3-4 at ES)

Out Larsson 56gp. 4-6-10 (all at ES)
In Ceci 53gp. 4-13-17 (all at ES)

Out Jones 33gp. 0-4-4 (all at ES)
In Keith 54gp. 4-11-15 (3-6-9 at ES)

Out 6-16-22 at ES in 132gp.
In 8-22-30 at ES in 121gp.

Ceci was on a team that scored 10 more goals than we did last season and Keith was on a team that scored 24 less goals than we did last season.

Bouchard was on pace for a 20 point season last season, depending on his ice time and usage he could be a 30-40 point defenseman this season.

On top of this we have better 2 way forwards which will make things a lot easier for the D

Koskinen sucks
How many times are you going to say this, do you realize how many times you've already stated this, are you directing your convictions towards any particular user or users on this message board at this point? Is it beacon for guests or first time gawkers. I'm not trying to be sarcastic. Everytime I come to this board I see you post this view and I am not alone, we have all seen it many times now. It's an actual hard statistical percentage of not only posts in this thread but of total posts on the Oiler's board. I'm formally asking you to please give it a rest until Koskinen plays for this team or another team and displays some underwhelming results.

I've watched three seasons of Koskinen now. He sucks, why can't some of you accept this? I can only assume you're just coping at this point and downplaying the reality that a large part of our success next season is riding on this bum.

It's going to be funny seeing how fast some of you will turn on him when he's the same shitty goalie again next season and we might not even make the playoffs because of it.

Maybe this piece doesn’t get solved this summer. The same duo can get us to playoffs. If koskinen salvages his game maybe we do damage. The bottom six got deeper. The forecheck and cycle capacity is way better. The defence is what it is while we see what Bouchard / Samo / Broberg become. But there’s a strong possibility this is the tandem we go into the season with. In the best case scenario it works. Worst case it fails and no upgrade is available. But Koskinen comes off next summer. This too shall pass.

If I was you, I wouldn't be putting my money on Koski to somehow turn this around though. Smith is a different animal mentally and emotionally.
Ya, emotionally unstable, I wouldn’t count on a 40 year old smith being anywhere close to last year. Koskinen has a better chance of returning to form than smith being close to last year

No one is saying he doesn’t suck right now.

but 2 years ago he didn’t.

If you can argue that, which isn’t true but let’s say it is, it’s easy to argue that Koskinen is mentally weak

One of the things that Mike Smith had worked on last offseason was nothing to do with the training he went out and got. It was changing his perspective to not worry about when players in front of your are making errors and overreacting. It showed

Wow, he's technically ONLY 39? I guess that dispels any concerns about his age.

Wow much sarcasm! such clever!

The point is he’s only a year older than last year, it’s reasonable to presume that he will be able to perform at a decent level in comparison to last season

He had such a great year because of refinement of his technique and mental state. That shouldn’t fall off that quickly

He basically had a career year last season, a clear outlier. We'll be lucky if he only regresses back to what he was and doesn't clearly decline or fall off a cliff like every other 40 year old player.
