So Larssons 70% min away from McD and defensive zonestarts has nothing to do with Larsson spending alot of time defending and he did it extremly well with a lesser D partner.

Barrie,Ceci or Bouchard is going to take those D zonestarts and those 70% min away from McD!

Of course will our goalies have less help and protection, especially in and around the crease!

The Oilers won 13 out of 21 games with Larsson out 2 years ago, and 3 were OT losses.
We also won 1 playoff game without him and none this year.

You are drastically overstating how much his departure is gonna hurt this team

I will say that Larsson with a bad back 2 years ago and the Larsson of last year are like Jekyll and Hyde.

He'll be missed. That's coming from someone who wasn't his biggest fan.

I don't hate the man. I hate the game he plays. He hasn't shown any improvement after each season. It's just the same old. Smith actually did something. He hired a goalie coach to help him

I didnt love Koskinen last year either, but maybe he hired his own goaltending coach this offseason. Who knows. At this point, hes on the team. I hope he bounces back for his and the Teams sake.

He'd be missed if it wasn't addressed. It won't be as noticeable b/c we've added multiple pieces to plug that hole

Ya, emotionally unstable, I wouldn’t count on a 40 year old smith being anywhere close to last year. Koskinen has a better chance of returning to form than smith being close to last year

I still say he won’t be on the team. We aren’t going anywhere at all if Koskinen is who we will rely on

The hole isn't so much plugged as reconfigured....
Were not so much a one line team anymore.
We have added a couple of good possession puck getting garbagemen. One is pretty darn good at PKing too.
If Tippet can wrap his head around throwing Benson and Perlini in the right situations ...maybe one will succeed....and if that happens we could actually have a third line with a fourth that could be used to cycle. But don't hold your breath on this one....
The short term ....first 20 to 25 games ....might be very painful...
We need to get to mid january playing at least 50 percent hockey....things should start to improve from there.

He was good for us 2 out of 5 years and him with Kulikov was bad for us during the playoffs. With his back problems Seattle will probably only get 2 good years out of him. Losing him created a big hole because when he’s on his game he’s one of the best shutdown D in the league.

Perhaps i do, we will see!

It not just Larsson as a player, it rubbed the whole D and Barrie,Ceci,Bouchard gonna replace all those minutes away from McD, dont think it will be pretty!

Larsson was also Smiths best friend, with all those blocked
shots and keeping the crease free, it will be a harder journey for our Goalies!

Perhaps we are lucky and all the ? Pans out, but i dont think so!

You dont know either, just wait and see!

It's almost as if they know what they have and have some some expectations.

I haven't been as bullish on a prospect coming into the season as I am with Bouchard since McDavid.

I would bet a good amount of coin that by Thanksgiving he will be solidly in the top 4 and causing doubters to eat crow. I think his defensive warts are overblown while his poise with the puck and shooting ability from the point is the best for an Oilers d-man this age since, I don't know? Coffey?

Duncan Keith almost blocked as many shots as Larsson last year. Keith/Ceci together will block more.
That’s because they are two people… I do think the downgrade from larsson to Ceci is easily mitigated from the upgrade to Keith from whoever was there.

Mcshogun99 has the right of it.

I would say that Larsson improved significantly this last year but imo still a step down from that 2016 year.

It's very hard to imagine he will be healthy enough moving forward to truly lament not having him on our team.

I think a lot of posters would have been upset about Larsson coming back for $4M x 5 (the extra year offered).

Debatable. Until we see at least a full year with Ceci and the results, we can't really say it's downgrade based on performance. They are somewhat two different D with different set of skillsets.

If you meant downgraded in Shutdown ability because Ceci is not known to have the physical edge to his game, then yes for sure,
but you have upgraded in puck-moving ability, two-way skill, and the main option on the 2nd powerplay.

Basically, downgraded in Physicality and toughness but upgraded in puck-moving and mobility

Honestly, by the end of the year I expect Bouchard to look like a younger version of Dougie Hamilton.

NOT AS GOOD A PLAYER everyone, but with that skill, poise and positive impact.

Edit: If Bouchard's play pushes Ceci, and even Barrie, down the lineup, just means the team is better.

Just a reminder of our goaltenders since 2010
2019-2021 - Mikko Koskinen - 56 Wins 47 Losses 9 OT Loses - 0.908 sv %
2020-2021 - Mike Smith - 40 Wins 18 Losses 8 OT Loses - 0.912 sv %

.

W/L does not mean much over a 10 year sample but when looking at two goalies over the same period of time, playing under similar systems and personnel it becomes clear just how below average Mikko Koskinen really is. 40-18 vs 56-47 is a striking difference.

I'm trying not to imagine a scenario where Smith gets hurt or burned out and Koskinen becomes the starter.
Ok, so like the situations we've seen previously?

I will be disappointed if Koskinen starts another game for the Oilers, I would be SHOCKED if he ever approached the starter's job again.

I doubt it. Bouchard already looks older than 90% of the d-men in the league.
