Hey this one’s a long shot but Ehlers has been in Bowness’ dog house for quite some time + he doesn’t want to be there next year. Would it be too far fetched to grab him, sending Yamo + 1st on the way?
Long shot probably but for sure would be down for Ehlers. His cap hit is 6 mill and still has 2 more years after this season

I was too busy today to really pay attention to anything. Sounded like lowetide was talking about EK in the off season? Anyone hear what he was saying?

It wasn’t even just flames fans that thought they’d somehow be good this year.. tons of idiots who get paid to have some hockey sense thought they improved.

I was gentle and said they maybe had 1-2 years before their big money guys fall off a cliff. I didn’t think Huberdeau would crack 80 pts but he’s worse than even I expected.

Too bad we can’t embarrass them in the playoffs, they won’t be back for a while.

Any word on if that’s it or if they might look to add another defenceman tomorrow? Looks like we are right at the cap right now so it would likely require retention and salaries going out.

I think we’re taking a big risk in a year where we could actually contend for the cup. We might not have a #1RD, but we have a guy who can mostly keep his head above water in that position with support (Ceci), and several other players who could survive there in a pinch. That’s fine by me.

But #1 RW? We don’t have anybody. And our top pure RW is Yamamoto? Who is banged up? So if we run into trouble we’ll be elevating…. Derek Ryan to the top line? Thats what we’ve been doing recently anyway.

Its wrong.

Campbell might not be perfect, but we’ve got Skinner.

At RW, I don’t like it. Its very soft, MCDavid and Draisaitl should never have to play with 4th liners in the playoffs but its highly likely that they will as things stand.

Unless we think Lavoie is going to crack the big club I think we need to do something to get a reliable top 6 RW. Doesn’t have to be elite but has to be solid. Even Hoffman would be a big upgrade.

Lawson Crouse would be phenomenal. Connor Sheary would help. Theres lots out there. Yeah, we’d have to pay for double retention, send Shore and VD down, etc. - But it’d pay off.

The beat guys are suggesting they're done, but there are some interesting names that can help and maybe flipping out Yamo to get help.

I mean, I don't think it really matters all that much. When we have 5 top 6 forwards as good as we do, and how often its slid around?
Bjugstad might get some reps up there.

As things stand, Bjugstadt will get some reps up there. Derek Ryan is getting reps up there. Its preventing our elite guys from performing at their peak Level. Thats how we win the cup - having a solid team around elite talents performing at their peak level. Its fine to beat up Toronto with scrubs on our top line, but its going to be hard to beat Boston in a playoff series like that. Or, impossible. And then if we take an injury to a winger (several of whom are very injury prone this year?) How low do we stoop?

If they get the point where they have to challenge anyone from the East in the playoffs, that would be kinda great

Give McDavid Kane, Drai the other 2 and find random rotation for McDavid. McDavid is playing at peak level right now.

Wonder if there’d be any takers for Kulak. Have to think some eastern team could use him for a depth option who can play top 4 in a pinch.

Have to think Nurse Ekholm Broberg are solid enough for the LD side, that the cap space we free up from Kulak could be used to bring in a top 9 RW or a second pair RD.

Obviously Kulak is nice to have around in case of injury, but I’d have more faith in Broberg to play second pair in a pinch than I would in the right side to look even halfway okay if Ceci or Bouchard go down.

Just curious for next season. Is the cap at 83.5 for sure, or is there a chance it's higher? I haven't kept up with the latest on that
My personal expectation is that it will be higher. But this is no more than a personal feeling. At the revenue levels that Bettman spoke of it seems to make sense that the league and the players negotiate a modestly higher cap to even out the coming cap increases.

I called a huge regression for the Flames this year. I am not surprised at all. Even with their “historic” season last year  they lived off of loser points to win the division. The oilers had like 2 fewer wins or something? Everyone should have seen this coming even if Johnny and Turtle had stayed on board. We broke Markstrom so bad last year there was no way he was repeating his performance form the regular season last year. Flames are and mostly always were a mediocre team that refuses to rebuild.

If they have a realistic chance at Parayko now, they should take it rather than wait and hope a player is still available in the spring. Plus it gives them a better chance to win this year. Adding him to Nurse and Ekholm would be a hell of a top three, definately give us the advantage this year in the west.
I think Parayko is a better fit anyways, better defensively.

You don’t think that they can? The Ekholm move sets us up to take down the west. Its obviously not guaranteed (a winger would help), but theres a real chance now. But it will be very difficult to win it all with 4th liners weighing down our top players every night. (ANY winger with C+ level finishing would be a massive upgrade for us and hugely needed injury insurance)

You have to be cap compliant to start every year no matter what, the deal the Oilers can offer in the summer is going to be the same, probably less now frankly.

We already spent a lot of draft capital to get Ekholm, if San Jose thinks we’re offering more in the summer they’re full of it.

Grier is a young GM, think the reality he is too chicken to pull off a deal that big that early into his tenure but I can see Karlsson becoming upset the longer they keep him there.
$10m on a capped out roster is at minimum two active players from it. Three if we're being realistic. Getting a team to take those players back is one very significant hurdle. Replacing them is another. Removing three players to add one in the middle of a season they're attempting to be competitive is likely to have negative consequences in terms of team chemistry and quality of depth, regardless of who the player you're adding is.

Show me examples of competitive teams that tear apart their rosters to add. Toronto has added five players over the last two weeks who are likely to be on their playoff roster. The only active player they dealt from it was Rasmus Sandin--in a separate trade.

Selling teams do not want your unwanted players.

Fingers crossed. This would increase our chances at an impact move this summer.
