It doesn’t matter how it went down. What matters is what went down. And what went down is a bad trade.
If Holland loses 1 trade this offseason but manages to win 2 others, I still consider this off season a success. We have no idea what his plans are.

Now that the initial frustration has worn off for me, I've been thinking.

Maybe Holland did this trade FOR McDavid. It's pretty clear that we lack the necessary leadership to get to the next level. He could have sat McDavid down and told him that Keith was available but only at THIS price. Maybe once it became know that Keith wanted to play in Western Canada, McDavid reached out to Holland?

We have no idea how this all went down, and clearly the Oilers desperately wanted Keith.

I'm all for having Keith, I was just hoping for some retention considering how desperate Chicago was to move him. But whats done is done. Im going to hold off with my judgement towards Holland for now.. atleast until the end of the summer. He has to have some sort of plan and other moves in the works.

This is what people don’t get though.

Chicago wasn’t desperate to move him.

They were doing him a favour.

They have space now to go after a Hamilton or someone like that but their d is still not pretty.

We should also not beat teams in hockey games. At least let it go to OT so both sides are happy.

This is a ridiculous mindset.
For the trade itself, I don’t like it. For the mindset, I think it is the right way in general. To say that it is ridiculous to want two people/sides to be content after a trade is kind of mind-boggling to be honest. Our society is built on this, and is being destroyed by people not following that principle.

The mindset has nothing to do with winning games, the business of sport is winning. Trade is not sport.

manning had the lower cap hit and jones + 3rd> cug. The only saving grace is Keith may be able to be play third pairing
Manning wasn't an NHL player who hurt McDavid because he's not a good enough player, also a racist POS. SO No, this trade isn't worse, if you're convinced it is, you're out of your mind.

Duncan Keith is twice the player NOW that Manning ever was.

Well he may be able to play a second pairing.

We don’t know though because Chicago had to play him on their top pairing.

How many grey hairs does Greene have? Is he using Just For Men yet? If so, Holland probably goes up to 7M

I think it also depends on how much of a flow Andy Greene can grow. Can it rival Smith or Keith's? I guess we will find out! #AndyGreeneFlowWatch

This extremely overpaid Cap hit ruins lots of options for this off season. And this isn’t Holland’s first failed trade for this organization. If it was his first I’d be a lot more forgiving, but he’s quickly gaining a reputation as a lay down for the rest the Leagues GMs.

It's pretty close in my mind. Keith can fall of the cliff and we are stuck with a $5.5 M cap hit, compared to $2.5 M

If this trade didn't happen the way it did, would Chicago even have a chance at Seth Jones? I know this is all speculation, but it makes too much sense.

I think they were desperate but for whatever reason Holland was even more desperate.

Then he is as bad of a gm as some of us have been thinking. This guy is so much worse than tambellini it is not even funny. "Oh I want Chicago to be happy, i'll toss in a 3rd"
I mean he’s said it in the past, so it should not come as a surprise. However, I am not putting judgement into the assets he gave up, that wasn’t my point. What I am saying is that the people calling for him to fleece or bend over Chicago don’t really know Holland. He has said in the past that he does not work that way, like it or not.

You're not wrong but he still hasn't done anything close to Chia level yet.. hopefully it's only up from here lol

If the Hawks weren't going to retain then you don't say "Well that's fine", you walk away from the deal.

No! We HAD to have Keith!!! Only LHD that will be available at any time before next season. Doesn't get better than 38 year old at 5.5M that has had his game fall off a cliff.

He said he wanted to come here too, so we should feel privileged. Future HHOF guy wanted us. Haven't felt this special since Eric Belanger volunteered to sign an extra year because he liked what we were building.

Of course, that is not what I was arguing. I just saw again and again posts about why Holland didn’t bend Chi over, the reply was to that.

I think look back at the series with the Jets.

The only player who showed any sort of leadership was McDavid.

He was yelling on the bench, he was trying to rouse the group during a break.

Not a single other player stepped up.

I can see why you want a Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe winner as part of your leadership group on the ice.

It also takes some of the pressure off Connor.

Especially if Neal is gone and Smith is potentially gone.
