Wouldn't Chia have to finalize the trade by tomorrow morning? He was the one that mentioned something about a market shift after free agency hits.

There's a possibility the trade fell apart already.

Chia might look elsewhere.

lmao this board is crazy its like they completely whiped out last year and how the team absolutely cratered after Klefbom went down. Hall was healthy all year and he didn't do jack **** to get the Oilers out of the bottom 2 when there was no defense to aid the team. You added a better version of Klefbom and people think we're destined to be a worse team somehow.

You seem to forget that in that trade we lost our best 5v5 player. That makes a bit of an impact. Oilers barely score already.

Lmao Puljujarvi is an elite winger prospect just as Hall was in his draft year- and not only did he make the WJCs as a 17 year old (Hall didn't) but he made history being the youngest tournament MVP....17 points in 7 games vs 12 points in 7 games for Hall as an 18 year old in his draft year.

Counting on rookies to replace elite players is what got us to this level of failure in the first place.

The Oilers were 17 points out of a playoff spot. We are out of the bottom-5 this season if McDavid, RNH, and Klefbom have healthy seasons (70+ games)

when klefbom went down the oilers were 14-16-2 and in the thick of a playoff spot around 1 point out (granted they had played an extra 2 games than other teams in that spot). however they were close.

lets play asset management for one moment

March 4th 2014 oilers trade Hemsky to Ottawa for two picks 79th overall and 130th overall

oilers flipped 79 with a second and 5th for Talbot
Oilers flipped 130 to the Hawks for Nilsson
Oilers flipped Nilsson to the blues for the pick used to take Graham McPhee

why do I point this out

Milan Lucis who was drafted by the Bruins with the 50th overall pick--that pick was traded by the Oilers to the Bruins for Sergei Samsonov

Hamonic was also taken with a pick originally owned by the oilers as well

We don't have anyone proven to replace Hall either. Lucic is a complementary player. Puljujarvi should get there but it's a bad idea to rely on him for that right now.

McDavid will have to shoulder a ton of the scoring load on his own.

Lol you are validating his point. Tavares- an elite center- has shouldered the load single-handed in his time as an Islander.....even leading them to repeated playoff appearances/100 point seasons.

Why can't McDavid- a generational center- do the same?

7.1M per year. 7 years.

Geez Chia. Hope this isn't the truth.

Chiarell is honestly not any better than Mac T. Mac T could've made these same moves.

Lowe, as sad as it sounds, is our last competent GM, Chia rode the coat tails of a good situation in Boston that was largely laid out for him and gutted it entirely by gifting away Seguin, Bruins would still be Cup contenders with Seguin.

Chiarelli will take us to the playoffs soon. Larsson and more dmen is exactly what we need. All these posters crying right now will see the light. In life it takes calculated risks to be a winner, and we will win. Book it and quote me!

I would target Staal for 3C if he's available. Vet experience, motivated, good defensively and skilled enough to contribute + size. Depends on the price tag obviously, have a feeling he gets around 4 million and if that's the case, I would pass. Other then that, I would target Hanzal and Helm.

I wouldn't mind Staal, but I don't think he really cuts it as a C anymore, he's more of a winger now and he doesn't skate like he used to after his knee injury. He's smart enough and skilled enough that I could see a team milking a couple more 40-50 point seasons out of him. I'd be price and term sensitive since the reviews on him in his time in New York were unanimously awful. As far as mentors go I struggle to think of a better one for McDavid.

We had a worse record with McDavid than without him. I guess he didn't go jack **** to get the Oilers out of the bottom 2 either.

Blaming Hall for the Oilers' strugglers is Toronto-esque with their Kessel idiocy. Management being terrible doesn't mean all of the players are terrible.

I wasn't blaming Hall jesus christ. I was showing how much more important a guy like Klefbom was to the team last year than a guy like Hall. People spit up the decrease in goal differential this past year and somehow they don't think adding a D man who at worse is a top 4 right now won't help diminish that. People are acting like Hall was the only offensive weapon this team has its ludicrous. You got teams like New Jersey whose best offensive weapon is Henrique and yet they continually finish higher than us in the standings.

I could totally see it. GM's fall in love with size and that can make them do crazy things on free agency day (see: Holik, Clarkson, Clowe etc.). I like Lucic but if we're seriously talking about 7 years at over 7 million, we need to back out and find a better option (maybe Eriksson although his age is worrisome).

I'd be fine with Chiarelli going up to 7 years for Lucic but that's only if that 7th year comes at a big cut in salary thus lowering the overall cap hit.

imo he was plan B if we didn't get Larsson

Chia said he wants to get a PP QB now. That's not Demers

LArsson used to be an offensive Dman. Then he got drafted by NJ. When you get benched and then healthy scratched because you made a bad pinch in your second year in the nhl....you tend to get pretty scared to run with your instincts.

I think CHia will continue to look for that shot threat BUT i also believe he knows Larsson and knows his O game history. ITs present today in the way he can transition, find lanes, and make clean passes to forwards. Its harder to make those transition passes than it is to execute plays when you are on the attack. That bodes well for him

I fully expect Chia to get us a PP qb with a shot threat....but I also expect Larsson will be trained out of his hesitation to join offensive plays. It will be a process, for a guy who has spent years having his hands hit by a yard stick every time he tried something creative.

If Lucic doesnt sign tomorrow...ths was still a trade that needed to happen but it will hurt more. I believe Lucic signs though and our wings are playoff worthy. Add one more solid dman and we have an actual competitive lineup

i did a lineup yesterday with Lucic and Demers and Larsson.....

WOW What a change

Wiz as a PP specialist for 2 years is fine. I personally think Klef, Davidson and Larsson will see lots of PP minutes eventually

Nobody has even mentioned Demers lately. Maybe he is out..
Demers doesn't really make a lot of sense to me anymore as Larsson brings a somewhat similar skill-set. At this point, we need a defenceman who can quarterback our first powerplay unit and that's not something Demers is really known for. Demers would certainly provide an upgrade to our top four over Davidson (who is likely currently slotted in at #4) but I just don't see him being a big enough improvement to justify a long-term deal at over $5M.

On the other hand, I really don't like the idea of penciling in Davidson in the top 4 to start next year.

If Demers wants to come here, I'm not taking the risk of waiting out the trade market to see what kind of core piece I can get killed on.

Demers is a good D-man. I'd be very happy to have him here and I still think after signing him that we can look into a PP QB of a cheaper variety.

I'll say this though: If Demers goes for higher than say, 5.25M, then I walk away. I don't want to give him 5.5. That might force our hand.
