Ron Maclean ….owes his entire Career to Don Cherry and would have been tossed on a garbage heap long ago if he didn’t grab on to Don Cherrys coat tails and hang on for dear life.

Ron Mclean through Don Cherry under the bus countless of times being a kiss ass to the Corp and management.

He is the poster boy of someone who strives to be Politically correct at all times/ even at the expense of his own Character morals / loyalty and general common sense.

Should have a super imposed picture of a cock roach in place of his head in Ron mcleans. Powder baby blue hockey night in Canada sports jacket when he’s on the Panel.

Bieska is a former tough guy … that now takes his questions and Marching orders on the panel from to 2 retired goalies and old man mcClean who has no backbone of fortitude.
Bieksa was never a tough guy. Semi tough at most. Mostly went after smaller players he thought he could take.

Ron was eloquent and knew how to weave a story. Was good in his day, I will always give him his due.

Ron Maclean is a national treasure no one has a better presence on camera, unfortunately he has very little talent on his panel now and is not played to his strengths.

Plus the production on Rogers is a little sub par compared to what was on CBC
It did seem like he transitioned well over to Rogers. Could be that the CBC and Rogers asked different things from him. I haven't liked the slapping of the HNIC brand on a Rogers' product at any point... perhaps some of the old CBC employees haven't either.

National treasure?
The guy is so past his prime, and the lame run on puns has been cringeworthy at best.

Way past his time to retire....

Put David Amber in that role, and they are set for many years...

Be progressive and put Mikayla Demaiter on the panel. We will see viewership rise up.

Nothing they do at this point will salvage the product with three years left on the deal. They just need to ride things out and chalk up their losses at the end of it as a colossal failure on their part.

Rogers is way too corporate to make it exciting. And Strombo was not the answer because he was the antithesis of anyone hockey, and he singlehandedly helped snowball the entire production into amateur hour and downward spiral into what it is today. They haven't recovered since.

David Amber sucks too though.

Heavily disagree. Compared to TSN panel sure but compared to the SN corporate panel he is easily one of the best and easily better than Ron.

Plus they seem to be hiring and coaching the "personalities" to be as inoffensive and straightlaced as possible which is why the end product is so dry and boring. Even TSN manages to find a balance of being family friendly but having fun and making you feel as if you and your buddies are shooting the shit about hockey.

Sportsnet getting a few people who don't look like they are sitting on their chair upside down everytime the camera is on them and dropping all the politics would make the show 500x better.

Anything new on this?
Both MacLean and Bieksa have said they're going to be back. And there's been no word of any other changes. It seems Howard Berger's information wasn't very reliable. He may have had some contacts back when he actually worked as a reporter but last I heard he was working as a funeral director, so honestly, I wouldn't put much value on anything from him.

Bieksa comes off as a total douchebro-type

... and that makes him very relatable/genuine if you've spent signficant time listening to the loudmouths in a stinky locker room.

I don't always agree with his assessments, but I always can imagine a teammate who would have the same hot take.

I vote for Gene Principe and Debrusk. They have a great thing going, lots of positive vibes and would benefit from some additional talent around them.

I'm a big fan of some of the ESPN/TNT panels, Tocchet, Biznasty, Carter, and usually a legend like Messier or Chelios to add some jam... plus they have fun. They just need a better moderator.

He has forgot more about hockey than anyone around here knows. I dont know how anyone doesnt like him he is articulate, funny and actually knows what he is looking at.

Sportsnet is run by phone company masquerading as a TV network. It’s not a surprise that Sportsnet has trouble identifying good on-air talent. It’s always been this way, compare them to TSN now and way back in the day, there has always been a sizeable talent gap. And it’s not like Rogers doesn’t have the money to close that gap, they just are really incompetent in everything they do, especially broadcasting.
