Prospect Info: Round 2 - Pick #58 - D Mason Lohrei - Green Bay Gamblers / USHL - 20/21

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
I remember reading that Lohrei started off as a forward, any chance he converts to fill a need up front as a power forward with great hands and size. We already have Mac and Lindholm and they may want to keep Orlov. Krech will probably be gone next year. I know that this is a left field thought but I am sure I am not the only one relishing his offensive game. Odds are he stays on dee and I see him as a Thomas Chabot style deeman with a bit more of an edge.

here is what nhl draft report has to say... its actually quite positive

Scouting Report
A smothering two-way defenseman who served as the focal point of Green Bay’s defense, Lohrei is a Culver Academy product who excelled in his first full USHL season. Bound for The Ohio State University, Lohrei plays like a seasoned veteran with ice water in his veins. He is incredibly poised with the puck, but he also knows how to exploit the aggressiveness of checkers.

While most young defensemen look to get rid of the puck at the first sign of pressure, Lohrei seems quite comfortable in not only handling the puck, but luring opponents towards him for the sole purpose of drawing them out of position. He does this by maintaining a high panic threshold that allows him to delay with the puck just long enough for a subtle chip or bank pass to spring his mates in an odd-man situation.

Beating back a forecheck is more science than art, and Lohrei executes them at a doctorate level. Passing the puck with precision seems to come naturally for Lohrei, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that he tied for the USHL lead among defensemen with 27 assists. On defense, Lohrei is a stopper, plain and simple. He holds firmly at the line and executes timely stick-on-puck checks, but his thick frame and strong lower body allow him to absorb the full weight of an onrushing puck carrier at top speed. He easily played over 20 minutes a game and was used in all specialteams situations.

Naturally, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound defender is not going to win any skating competitions. But Lohrei is quite mobile and uses a long, powerful stride to outpace pressure.
I really miss him and posts like this

No chance they move him back to forward.

People are acting like they reached at pick 6

it’s a complete crapshoot at this point in the draft. If you believe in a guy- take him. The difference/odds of making an impact between a player picked at 58 and 80 is negligible

big kid with some puck skills. Get him in the system and watch him grow into his body, see what happens
Wow prescient and also sounds like you’re very handsome too

Can’t believe ppl were complaining about the pick swap with the leafs in the 7th round back then lmao (which they used on Gallagher the next year!!!)

Think he could get a couple games in at the end of the year when everyone is resting?

Well it depends on the contract he signs.

The most likely outcome is they sign him to an ATO for this season, and then a contract starting next year. If that is what happens then there is no way he plays a game in Boston.

If they give him an entry level contract that starts immediately, then they might

Nice compliment

I wonder what is a solid comp for now...

Noah Dobson? (Also 6'4)

I gave a less skilled Chychrun (poor mans actually). On further thought I think
he looks like a 6:04 Zboril. Zboril and Lohrei clearly have physical NHL skill sets.
They skate and pass at NHL levels. The question for Lohrei is if the not so great tendencies can be coached out (high risk dangling and penchant for puck watching).

Zboril seems destined to be at best a #6 NHL D man due to his lack of IQ.

Why bother with an ATO? Just give him a contract and let him play 3-4 games in Providence and a couple in Boston at year end. Will at least give him an idea of what he
needs to prepare for.

The Big 10 and NCAA Tourney are for all intents and purposes between the ECHL and AHL. So he has already faced two years of "minor league" hockey.

Why the need to get him games in Boston this year and burn a year of his ELC? Bad asset management.

Well you are playing with very good talent, it is still very different from the AHL.

that said, he is only eligible to sign a 2 year entry level contract at this point. Remember McAvoy was younger when he signed so he got 3 years, somewhat less painful to burn that year (and it was needed then, not now).

What that means is of course if you burn that year then he becomes an RFA after next season, and while the cap may jump up in 2024, the Bruins are likely to be carrying cap penalties again that year.

It also ties their hand, and puts them at 50 contracts, which means that is a carrot they wouldn't be able to use to get another player to sign, in the competitive UDFA market.

I guess there is the chance Lohrei demands it, but it's not necessarily great for the player as well. As it shortens their development window

I'd rather just let him go to Providence, and hope for a long playoff run down there and get him 20-25 games at the AHL level

I can't be the only one who sees this resemblance

I can't be the only one who sees this resemblance, and I'd put him in for Zboril right now.
