Can Lohrei maybe get some NHL games in before people take victory laps?
This x1000.

Don't get me wrong, he's got some serious talent. But, there are a couple things that concern me. First is strength. He clearly needs another 20 pounds, minimum. The lankiness is the first thing you notice when you watch him. Second is his overall positioning. Ohio State lets him do whatever he wants and he's talented enough for college that he can get away with it most of the time. He'll have to play much more structured in the NHL, so that's going to be a big adjustment.

What I see is someone who's pro ready, but not NHL ready. I think he needs at least a year in the AHL working on defensive positioning.

Gotta Get him up in the 235-240 pound range. gonna feed him gunpowder to to make him ornery :)

After watching him this weekend I think he is likely in the opening night lineup
LOL.

230 pounds would put him heavier than Tyler Myers. 15 pounds heavier than K'Andre Miller. 10 pounds heavier than Jake Middleton, Matt Martin and Timo Meier. 12 pounds heavier than Josh Manson. 5 pounds heavier than Luke Schenn. 13 pounds heavier than Sergachev. 4 pounds lighter than Pat freaking Maroon.

Lohrei does not need to be anywhere near 230.

That's correct, June 1, 2024 would be the "fourth June 1" after Lohrei's draft year and the date upon which Boston would lose his rights. That's how I read the CBA.

So the Bruins are in no position to play hardball. They can try for the ATO + ELC, but if Lohrei's team does not bite after a week, I would have no problem just caving and burning a year of the ELC. The worst thing that can happen here is Lohrei goes back to OU.
Remember what the Bruins did with Charlie McAvoy. Just a comparison here. They signed McAvoy and let him burn a year off his contract. He played a few games in Providence and then was with the Bruins for the playoffs.

Is Lohrei = McAvoy? Maybe?

In watching both of Ohio State's games, it's obvious Lohrei's skating has improved dramatically. I don't think he is at the level McAvoy was at when he was signed. McAvoy won a gold medal at the World Juniors and was quite dominant in that tournament. Lohrei has nice size but sometimes bigger D-men take a little longer to reach their full potential. He's a great prospect. Who would Lohrei replace in this lineup? Don't think the Bruins would throw him into the fire at this point in time with this team unless injuries become a huge factor.

Don't let him go back to OSU. Sign him now.

going to need to get up to the speed and strength and the AHL will be a nice jump from college

Needs Adam McQuaid to fine tune him

Lot to like and I expect a top 4 with elite PP ability

I’d like to see some AHL action because it’s a huge jump

Plus Lohrei looks like he’s always playing 4x4

Did you miss his last game? He was terrible. Not saying he won’t be in the lineup but I tend to doubt it

Haven’t read it but let me guess. The same members of the fan club that like everything loved it. The same Bruins do nothing right group hated it. Each side is right sometimes and always pat each themselves on back when they are.

You would think there is no choice since I believe if he goes back next year he can sign w whomever he wants august 2024
Thats simplifying it a bit - the reality is the same group of posters almost every draft, who likely have watched zero seconds of most prospects, are always quick to crap on the pick if it isnt the consensus best pick at the time.

Unless Dom comes out and says a pick is absolute dogshit, most of our opinions are pretty irrelevant immediately after the draft.

Either way, way to early for a pat on the back, let's hope he continues his development.

Actually, the B's signed McAvoy to a PTO with the intention that he play in Providence. When injuries occurred and it was clear that McAvoy was the next best option, the B's signed him and brought him up.

The Bruins had far more leverage with McAvoy in those negotiations because McAvoy was still two years away from UFA eligibility and was far too good for NCAA hockey. So the threat of returning to BU was basically empty.

I stand corrected. I forgot about McAvoy's initial PTO. But even though the B's had the leverage you alluded to, they still burned a year of his contract. They knew how good he was, so why F*** around? Is the Lohrei situation comparable? Are they going to throw a rookie into these playoffs? Don't think so.

They weren’t going to play McAvoy either until they got to their 10th defenseman.

Our ninth and tenth defensemen right now are coming from a pool of Reilly, Ahcan and Stralman. Each is demonstrably a superior option to Lohrei at present. If we're giving Lohrei Stanley Cup playoff minutes, something's gone horribly, horribly wrong and at that point I wouldn't care about much of anything, let alone burning his 1st ELC year.

How did Benning get to be a UFA after three years of college and one year of the USHL after he was drafted? New rule I guess? Couldn’t he just leave school after his junior year? It’s four years after he was picked
It all depends on three things Lou:

1) The age they were drafted
2) Whether they received a bona fide offer if drafted from the USHL or Canadian Junior A (not major junior)
3) When they became a bona fide student.

If a player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student or becomes a bona fide college student by first June 1 following his draft and remains a college student through graduation, the Club will have exclusive negotiating rights until August 15 following graduation of his class.

NCAA players who played in the USHL or Canadian Junior A can have an extra year or two tacked on. If they were drafted out of those two Leagues and received a Bona Fide Offer described above and become a college student on or before the second June 1 following their draft, the Club will retain exclusive rights until August 15 following the graduation of his class. Dustyn McFaul and Quinn Olson are two examples here.

Lohrei was drafted out of the USHL and was committed to Ohio State when drafted. Therefore, the Bruins held his rights for the second year in the USHL plus 4 years of college - and he could make it 5 because of the COVID year. It's up to him

I know they own his rights, I’m saying he could leave after his junior year and force their hand no? Kind of like Erik Portillo seems to be doing? No chance he doesn’t sign soon though imo.

Are we sure Lohrei wouldn’t jump these guys if signed? Is he closer to McAvoy impact or Cross type impact? Lol

If a player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student or becomes a bona fide college student by first June 1 following his draft and does not remain a bona fide student until graduation of his class, then the Club will retain exclusive rights until the later of: a) the fourth June 1 following his draft b) 30 days after NHL Central Registry receives notice that the player is no longer a bona fide student on or after January 1 of an academic year and the player 1) has commenced his fourth year of college or 2) is in his fourth year of college and is scheduled to graduate then the circumstances described in (1) or (2) the Club retains exclusive rights through August 15.

So, in your example they would hold his rights until the 4th June following his draft which is June 1, 2024. Where is he going to go play Europe or is he going to take a year off? If he goes to play in Europe, then the Bruins hold his rights indefinitely. Would he take the gamble and take a year off? If he does, he has a bad advisor then.

Lohrei is not a free agent and does not have the negotiating advantage to burn a year off his deal now like free agents do. Doesn't mean he won't get it, but he's got no negotiating power here.

Are we sure? I'm not Don Sweeney. I'm also not in the same stratosphere as @Saxon Eric or @DominicT when it comes to knowing anything about these guys. But there's quite a range between McAvoy and the good Doctor Cross and the situations are also different. But he's a better prospect (I think) than Tommy Cross was, even after his 17th development camp.

I remember the good old days. When we questioned why the Bruins drafted a kid like Mason who grew up in rotary phone days😉

I’m not an expert on the guy whatsoever but he seems a lot more raw that McAvoy was when he made the jump. The tools are there, but probably needs more cook time. Wouldn’t expect or frankly want him to have to play in the NHL this year because that probably means we’ve lost a lot of guys.
