A lot does need to change. I expect Lombardi to react and we will see what comes at the draft. Our defense definitely needs to become younger and faster. Regehr is the only guy I want back of the veterans, but as a bottom pairing guy.

On the bright side, it was really nice to see a few Kings attack the net. It was a breath of fresh air to see this last night:

Unfortunately, the only players we have capable of anything like that is Carter, Kopitar, Gaborik, and maybe Doughty.

That's a pretty good contingent.

The Kings got zero, ZERO even strength goals from the bottom six in 18 playoff games last year and the only change Dean made was bringing in Carcillo for Richardson.

That was one of Dean's poorest decisions as GM, not addressing the bottom six after the disaster of last years playoffs. To me it sent a horrible message that no one down there was held accountable for that performance. In fact Clifford and Lewis were given extensions with raises.

Herby, the funniest part of this statement is that Carbomb actually scored a goal last night (thereby passing MRichie's offensive output). And fwiw, Lewis is one of the Kings' leading scorers in these playoffs.

Jordan Nolan had 8 minutes of ice time and I thought he was one of the best players in the 1st period.

Mike Richards was a -2.

Regehr was a -2.

Sutter's favorite, Trevor Lewis, was a -2.

Doughty and Muzzin combined for 1 hit.

So the defensive forwards Richards' and Lewis were a combined -4. The young D-men who used to hit all the time had 1 hit and our veteran D-man was a -2.

Great post skolgar. I will say though that the criticism of McNabb is his footspeed, so there's that.

As an aside, this will be the first time Quick (and others, I'm sure) gets to rest and relax without rehabbing an injury. Theoretically, he will go into next season fully healthy, conditioned, and coached. Since the cup run, he's had back surgery and a groin injury...

Thanks. Btw, this year's compressed schedule has led to less practice time. That tends to penalize more system based teams like the Kings vs. teams that rely more on talent. With a more regular pacing of games next year will we see the more talented teams being clamped down more again?

Reports out of Buffalo aren't that he couldn't crack the lineup as much as it was that the Sabres were cycling through their young dman to see what they had and stayed with veterans who weren't good just to avoid screwing up the development of their young blueliners. McNabb was available because the Sabres stocked up on a bunch of high end guys, but comparing him to the guys on the Sabres roster this season and judging his readiness for a starting spot next season based upon that is probably bad analysis and lack of understanding of the situation in Buffalo.

I have said pretty much exactly what you said here in another thread. I was simply condensing it.

Lewis' situation may have been more about DS taking a player who is having a good series and putting him with other players to get them going. Not sure that Lewis was to blame for his -2, but although he didn't have a great game yesterday, he has had a decent series.

What about something along the lines of this...

Ehrhoff - Doughty
Martinez - Niskanen
Regehr - Voynov
Muzzin

Niskanen in the 4,250,000-4,500,000 range.

Looking toward next year, I would like to see the Kings think about adding UFA's like Milan Michalek and Mason Raymond. Size, skill, and speed at the weak LW position. Even secondary options like Jussi Jokinen or Mike Cammalleri. Steve Downie is an option as well, though a RW, he would add a dimension the Kings are missing.

We still don't have a 2nd line LW.

I hope they also give Andreoff a shot on the bottom 6.

?-Kopitar-Williams
?-Richards-Carter
King-Stoll-Lewis
Clifford-?-Nolan

That is what the roster would look like if all the UFA's walked. Toffoli and Pearson are in the mix too but as you can see, the Kings need two LW's and one 4th line center. Toffoli is a RW and Pearson is a LW. Pearson looks like another year in the AHL wouldn't kill him. Andreoff could be primed to take that #4 center position now.

And Stoll has 1.

Just shows how tough it is to win in the playoffs. Everything needs to click together. Right now, the Kings have 3 goals in 3 games from bottom 6 forwards. That's pretty damn good. A goal a game? What more could you ask for? They've got 2 goals from Carter, Gaborik, Kopitar, Richards, Brown, and Williams.

Look at Montreal and Bourque. 9 goals and 16 points in 63 games this season. 3 goals in 4 playoff games. Eller, same thing. 12 goals, 26 points, in 77 games. 2 goals and 5 points in 4 playoff games.

Of course not. But that's because they were actually IN the games. At what point (other than the first period of game 2 and parts of game 3) did you feel like the Kings could actually win one of these games? To me, that is the biggest issue here..the Kings are getting completely dismantled in this series.

Actually, I thought the Kings played well enough to win last night. I do believe you make your own luck, but the Kings had some really unfortunate bounces last night. First two games, I don't know wtf was going on, but it was more of a mental/motivation issue than a personnel issue.

Plus don't discount the Sharks. Their core knows that they really need to finally prove themselves and are really motivated to not only win a Cup, but to beat the Kings specifically. Organizationally, they brought in Big Bird to teach them his to play defence and it seems to have taken - even Thornton has finally decided to give up personal goals to play defence. I hate to give the Sharks credit, and I hope to hell they don't win the Cup this tear, but they are really playing well this year and don't seem as prone to mental collapses as in past years.

Muzzin

Niskanen in the 4,250,000-4,500,000 range.

Look at the list of UFA defensemen. Niskanen is about the only one under 35 that teams will be going hard after. He is going to get paid.

I would like to see Clifford moved out to open a spot for Pearson.

After watching last nights game I would strongly consider re-signing Willie Mitchell...even at 36-37 he is a warrior and more effective than RR.

Greene is a goner, we know that. McNabb is in. So now the Kings have to decide what to do with WM and who is the #7 guy.

I actually don't have a problem with Lewis, I think he is fine as a 4th liner, especially since he can play center or wing. I just thought it was horrible management to make no significant changes to the bottom six after last years playoffs. It sent a terrible message that they were cool with how those guys played.

Clifford is beyond worthless, it's time for people to stop reading his draft profiles from five years ago and think that player is ever going to come to fruition. I had high hopes at one time for Clifford also, but he is just another stonehands fourth liner with zero game sense. His scratch was long overdue.

Ya I think WM for one s better than what will be on the market in LA's price range.
I think Forbort should get looks as the #7.
Would prefer a trade for a higher caliber d-man than re-signing WM.
We are stuck with RR.

Clifford to Edmonton for 2015 2nd rounder.

If we could find a way to keep mitchell while ditching Regehr, I'm all for it. I still think we should keep mitchell regardless, but eh.

agreed.
I actually am RR fan. but he is slow and has made too many mistakes. Like I said early a 5/6 d-man is what he is now.

Sadly, I agree.

Bummer because he looked better via the eye test at the end of the season, but last night he was directly responsible for at least one goal and indirectly led to a lot of pressure. Just a shame.

Argh, the more I look back on last night, the more frustrating it is. A fluky rainbow shot, Quick getting blasted by his own d-man, and a flutterball OT winner. If that's not fate on the Sharks' side, I don't know what is.

Funny enough our scoring is just fine.

I don't see Lombardi trading Richards, but at this point he's pretty much a 3rd line grinder. I would like to see this starting next year.

?? - Kopitar - Gaborik
?? - Carter - Toffoli
Pearson - Richards - Brown
King - Stoll - Lewis

Ex: Nolan

Probably the best C depth in the league if we roll the lines like that.
