Idk ask Alexander Mogilny why he had to sneak out of the USSR or why Yasiel Puig had to sneak out of Cuba. It's about control, national pride, etc. The Mogilny and Puig comparisons aren't apples to apples but it's the same idea. And I don't think it is necessarily Putin saying "bring me Michkov!" or anything like that, but I think Russia in general would rather say "Michkov is one of the best young players in the world and he has decided to stay and play in the far superior KHL" than "Michkov is doing great in the USA we are so proud of him!" especially at a time where thei country is involved in what appears at this point as a losing war effort. It isn't clear to me why Michkov staying would be more desirable to Putin them him becoming a star in the best league in the world. What does him staying accomplish?
Is that what's happening? Who knows but the more things like Fedotov's situation, then Michkov getting benched then loaned to an inferior team, it just I think is no unreasonable to wonder if something is up. We wouldn't have to worry if he wasn't there, but he is so here we are. More likely than not he comes over as planned in a few years but I personally am going to be sweating until he's here.
