Yeah, I really don't understand the Torts hate from some of the fan base. I certainly wasn't thrilled when he signed here because I wanted a fresh face with some new ideas, but Torts won me over as the season went on. And there's no denying the guy's track record. Also, my biggest gripe prior to Torts was the Flyers had the feeling of a team whose soul left them after Ed Snider died and Comcast Corp, Hextall and Hakstol were running the show. Torts is the type to force the life back into the franchise because he's going to demand they run through walls and will reward guys willing to do so. So as long as Michkov shows up here, is humble, confident and works his ass off, Torts will sing his praises and it will all be good.

The reason you don't understand is because the Venn Diagram of pining for a nostalgia-tinted version of Ed Snider and buying what Tortorella is selling is almost a perfect circle. You buy it because you're the target audience.

Just like Gritty and any number of other things, I don't get it. The man is an asshole and his track record is at best fine. Not everything has to be for me. It's ok.

No no no no no not ok.

Making a mascot to target children and the easily amused is fine. I don’t give a shit about that.

But the coach shouldn’t be hired just to target a specific awful section of the fanbase. The coach must be hired on merit and what’s best for the teams chances to win. He should be for you and for me and for everyone else all at once.

Merit doesn't exist in the NHL. Enjoy Arby's.

Especially joyous that Montreal was one of those teams. Their tears are particularly satisfying.
As a Habs fan, I used to consider the Flyers a rival, for some reason. Now that we passed on Michkov, I'm a new Flyers fan. I'll also be cheering for you guys and Michkov.

Having said that, we're for the most part getting used to the potential in the Reinbacher pick. Definitely happy with Reinbacher, although I'm a huge Michkov fan.

There are certainly a lot of funny videos on you tube showing the moment Habs podcasters who were covering the draft see us take Reinbacher.

Process this: Torts f***ing sucks.

He was signed for 4 years starting 2022-2023 season, expiring after the 2025-2026 season.

As it stands now, Michkov is slated to come over at the start of the 2026 season.

Are you saying you want Torts re-signed as head coach after his current contract expires? How long do you want him to stay on as head coach?

I have seen too many people, from beat writers to casual fans, talking about how great Torts will be for Michkov, but completely overlook the fact that in order for Torts to have a chance to coach Michkov he will need a new contract. We. Do. Not. Want. This.

Pray Michkov doesn't come over early.

I am with you on the levels of drive and compete that Tortorella-coached teams generally have. That is a good thing to instill in prospects. He also did not hesitate to bench veterans, notably Kevin Hayes, when they underperformed. What has soured me on the positives with him is the dashed expectation that he would be up-front and in open conversation with his players, which I had thought was a positive quality in his previous stops. Tortorella has admitted that he rarely talks one-on-one with players and prefers to air things out in the group setting ... when he is actually coaching, that is. Plus, this nonsense about benching players in their home towns smacks of meanness for the sake of being mean without any learning points or merit associated with it. As advertised, Tortorella doesn't feel the need to keep things to himself when talking to the media, so the already shaky situation with Hayes was shattered to the point of giving him away at 50% retention. And it is a near certainty that the recent moves have Tortorella's fingerprints all over them to shape the roster the way he wants first and foremost.

Torts isn't good at his job.

Torts is known for trying to fist fight & bench players, not for being some brilliant coach. Dude cares way more about sending messages e.g. benching players in their own hometowns than he does building a winner. He's the concept of a "power trip" manifested as a human being.

Torts hasn't won anything since 04-05. No idea how he keeps getting jobs. He actively makes players feel unwelcome, even if there are some who enjoy him.

Yeah, well I'm not a masochist like the rest of this board and I'm pining for when the Flyers actually, you know, won hockey games and Playoff series. I like how being someone who wants winning hockey and a team with a pulse is a negative around here.

What you want isn't winning hockey in the year 2023.

Not a masochist wading into a board you obviously dislike. I disbelieve.

They've won 20+ playoff series since Clarke retired. I am begging you to use your brain instead of defaulting to THINGS USED TO BE BETTER. Like perhaps not dismissing the vast amount of skill those 70s teams had for their time period. That's always the weirdest part of this discussion to me. They don't get the credit from their own hardcore fans.

Buddy, they were OBJECTIVELY better.
