League has changed since Lindros. One player can't have that kind of impact anymore.
Sure they can. It still took the Flyers 3 years to reach the playoffs after drafting Lindros and the Pens didn’t win the Cup until Crosby’s 4th season. Hell, the Oilers had Gretzky and Messier from the get go in 79-80 and didn’t win the Cup until 1984.

Generational players can turn a franchise around but it still takes time and good management.

Of course the Flyers haven’t had good management in forever so, um, it might be a while until they get there.

Probably best to stay the course this summer with the plan to free up cap space and make it known they are ready to sign people the following year when there could be some big time targets.
As I mentioned previously ITT, throw the bank at Draisaitl next summer.

The Nolan pick was the correct pick. It was just shit, terrible luck.
We've been down this road so many times on the Patrick selection. However, someone didn't do their due diligence regarding Patrick; his health, state of mind for hockey and other things. In hindsight, they clearly flubbed this opportunity.

In hindsight it ended badly. But go back to the night of the draft it was the consensus top 2 pick. Maybe we should bump the thread from that night

Or back to the outdoor game when Patrick played so well and looked like he’d arrived. Heiskanen is why you take Buium over Lindstrom, for example. 30 mpg stud D are more valuable than Cs.

Hedman over Tavares. Living on Long Island I told my friends this should have been the pick. For exactly your reason.

Yeah, lots of bad things and things to complain about regarding this organization but anyone that says they shouldn't have taken Patrick is lying to themselves. Gauthier sure people were split on that pick and there are definitely arguably better fits but Patrick was not a bad pick without knowing the future.

Honestly the biggest blunder I think is passing on Caufield.

I would rather have Boldy or Harley over Caufield (Although I don't blame them for taking York over Harley).

Being a consensus top 2 pick doesn't really mean anything if the consensus is wrong though. Even if we ignore Patrick's injuries, do we really think he ends up a better player than Makar has been? That is an evaluation failure.

Celebrini is the consensus #1 pick, but San Jose's scouts better be doing all their due diligence to have arrived at that consensus and to be certain that he ends up better than Demidov. Striking out on that evaluation and saying in a few years "But Celebrini was the consensus!" won't be a great excuse for making the wrong projection. That is the entire point of scouting.

The consensus pick at the time canard has always been a lazy logical fallacy used by many on this board....

An idiotic Tik Tok challenge can be the consensus "popular" fad at the time..doesn't make said stupid thing the right thing to do.

Those who follow never come in first....
