Maybe just maybe in 2-3 years we will have a legit crop of young forwards. Lafreniere/Othmann/Perreault/Cuylle/ maybe Chytil if he gets healthy. Sprinkled in with some possible good bottom 6 guys in Edstrom/Berard/Sykora.
Just let them keep developing where they are for now.

I want what I want
Gabe is good.

Leonard is good.

Smith is cheeks.

That is all.

Ya know, around the time of the draft, Craig Button mentioned scouts' NHL player comparisons for those guys, and for Smith, it was Zibanejad. After watching most of their shifts this year, I can see that frustrating comparison in one respect: He'll flash his speed and his skill. Make a deft little move/pass. Then, he'll go and make a mind-numbingly dumb play or totally whiff on a beautiful setup by a teammate.

I think Zibanejad would be a home run comp for him if he can reach it.

He's got 3 real problem areas for me as far as on ice stuff goes.

1. Puck Management. Thought he was starting to make some strides here post WJC (the games weren't perfect, but certainly were better) and then last night happened. Had 3 really, really bad ones, one ended up in the back of BC's net and the other 2 led to 2 on 1's. Counted 8(!) NZ or high OZ turnovers overall. A player shouldn't do that in a week, let alone in 1 game.
2. Transition support, specifically through his passes in the DZ/NZ and in creating advantages.
3. Almost everything he creates in the OZ is with a shit load of space which is being created by the others. Gonna be tough to live that way in the NHL unless you're playing with guys who can do that or if you're such a good passer that it doesn't matter (he isn't.)

I'd put a ton of money on Leonard and Perreault having better NHL careers.

What’s the realistic ceiling here? American Panarin?

Someone compared him to Claude Giroux and I really like that comparison. I could see that kind of upside.

Stylistically, Panarin is probably a better comparison but I don't think Perreault will hit Panarin's ceiling. Panarin is 9 years into a likely HHOF career. 3rd fastest undrafted player to hit 700 points and a better personal career than Adam Oates ahead of him.

I didn't see Kariya play at Maine (who many people say was the best player in NCAA history.)

Eichel is easily the best I've seen at this level regardless of age. What he was able to do as a Freshman was insane especially with out a ton of support around him (Rodrigues has become a pretty good player and having a senior as support helps, but he pales in comparison to the talent that these other top freshmen scorers have had.)

Junior season Gaudreau is second.

Gabe isn't doing that, but the track record of true freshmen who do work and then go on to be good (or better) NHL players is pretty rock solid.
Kariya scored 100 points in 39 games for Maine in 92-93. Last player to score 100 points in a NCAA season.

He was an animal.
