yeah but they had Perreault at 9 too..
You do understand that, right?

and this is what "everyone/someofus" were saying, we could have done A LOT better. Perreault and Michkov would be a steal. We do not NEED to specifically target D we are rebuilding and we must take the best player available and Bonk was not the best talent available. imo of course.

You add that to the prospects forwards and young players what we already have ...
Yes sir I understand, please see my previous posts in the thread. Was just pointing it out.

You know what I love? An idiot like bill meltzer saying michkov needs to.improve his defense, then posturing about the fact he "knows" torts will be here for a while.

I kind of wish this team would enter the 21st century of hockey, given that we're 23 years into it already

Bonk ironically, is the upside pick. If he fills out and improves his skating, he has the IQ to be a defensive mainstay.
An efficient, reliable D-man who can eat minutes (22+) is more valuable than an undersized 60 point forward.
The question with Bonk is how far can his physical skills can progress, size, skating, puck handling - because he'll maximize the impact of those skills.
Will he be a reliable but limited #4, or an all situations mainstay #2?

I think the pendulum has swing a bit too far toward flashy skill, but anyone who has watched the Flyers play defense the last decade can see the value of smart, reliable D-men who don't make mistakes by their absence!

I don't want a defense composed strictly of York, Bonk, types, but I think it'll be much easier to integrate the high speed, flashy new style D-men when you have a few guys who can give you 20+ minutes a night of reliable, competent, smart play. Just compare Provorov with every partner he had since Niskanen left town and his play last season paired with York, and you can see where these type of guys can elevate teammates. Or Sanheim with Braun.

Oh please, you are really trying to talk us into this pretzel logic that "acccctually its a lot harder to find steady middle of the lineup guys than high end top pairing\top line players"?

Give me a break

Does any one project Perrault as a 1st line forward? Obviously there are a lot of questions about him or he wouldn't have fallen.
If he's a 60 point 2nd line/PP guy who has to be protect to some extent, he's a very good player, but not an elite player.

All you have to do is look at salaries and trades to see how #2 D-men who can play 22+ a night are valued. They're hard to find.
(forget true #1s, there are maybe a dozen?)
Provorov, who is used as a #2 but has been inconsistent, got a nice haul.
Sanheim, who is not seen as a 1st pair D-man, can't even garner a first because he's deemed overpaid at $6M.

That's why it's an upside play, if they project Bonk as a potential #2.
If he's only a #4/#5, those guys are available in the 2nd and 3rd rds and it's a bad reach.

After thinking more about this. It also screams we don’t have a second round pick. We better grab one of the better defenders cause they won’t be there in the third.

Bob McKenzie had him ranked at #28. This isn't some crazy off the wall pick. People here value hockey IQ and then when a kid is drafted for it they start complaining? This forum is bipolar.

Perreault fell through the draft not just by the Flyers.

Edit: Before someone chimes in inevitably, this isn't an appeal to Bob McKenzie. It's just a statement of a knowledgeable hockey person's ranking.
Bob had Gabe Perreault (RW) at 10

Projection and Comparison

As a right-handed defenceman with size, offensive ability and a strong defensive game, Bonk should be highly sought after on draft day. However, he is a couple of years away from making an NHL impact. Bonk needs some work on his skating. He can also add muscle to his frame in order to play his style of game at the pro level. Playing in London certainly helps. One can already see the great strides he made in his first full year with the Knights. Two more years in the London system would only help. In terms of his style, Bonk’s game is reminiscent of Brett Pesce. This is a stylistic comparison only though and not one based on skill and ability.
I like Bonk, but would have taken Perreault here. Would have taken Musty over Bonk, but if Bonk becomes Pesce, I am a very happy guy!

He also faltered to 23. It's not like just the Flyers past on him.

People are acting like the Bonk pick is some crazy out in left field pick and I'm just saying that it isn't. People keep talking about potential upside but how did that Sam Morin bust pick work out? Not good. (ancient history) Sometimes acquiring what you think is likely to be a solid top 4 defender is good value, especially if you're pretty comfortable it'll work out.

To some degree this forum should be ignored because they just plaster nonsense when it doesn't align to what they think a team should do as if they are some genius.

There are no sure things when you get into the late first. If we all knew a player was going to be a star, they wouldn’t be available in the 20s. Just go back and look at the 1st round in any prior draft. Most of the picks don’t work out, and a lot of the players who were written off end up being studs. Give Bonk a chance.

So many people are just completely unable to separate the pick from the player. Bonk could very well turn out to be a serviceable top 4 defenseman that has a great career with the Flyers, that still wouldn't change the fact that this pick indicates a flawed process. Basically every draft has star players drafted late in the first/early in the second, you should always be swinging for the fences with these picks, not drafting for floor/need.

First of of where do you see crazy? We were having a civil dialogue where I basically said that while I do not think this is a bad pick there was a better talent out there at 22, until you decided to put your f nose into conversation with Morin input.

Did you not read portions of this thread? You're the one who quoted me.

I would have prefferred Perrault too, but since he's going to the NYR, he will undoubtedly be a busted. Look at their draft record in the 1st rd the last handful of years. It's easy as a fan to get hyped on names. Often those names don't amount to much and literal-who's end up better players. Let's see how things shake out.
