Prospect Info: Round 1, 22nd overall: Oliver Bonk, RHD, London (OHL)

  • Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. We expect to have this issue solved once the maintenance is complete.
  • We are currently aware of "log in/security error" issues that are affecting some users. We apologize and ask for your patience as we try to get these issues fixed.

On paper, this pick has grown on me a lot but that's only working under the assumption that this organization is serious about fixing their player development. I mean, they've waxed poetic about doing just that ever since the "new era" began. Bonk should be a good litmus test.

Friendly reminder that Robert Hagg was once a prospect that was perceived to have offensive upside. Let's see if this team is actually capable of growing their prospects in smart ways instead of just grinding the skill out of players like that.

I want to clarify that I'm utterly and favorably enthusiastic of having a Bonk.

It's just that I'm also gonna make a doodoo all over the process driving it. Player, enthusiastic. Management, doodoo.
This is where I am. I don't mind the player. He seems like he'll be a useful NHL guy, albeit, not likely to be a big difference maker. I just can't make sense of the process that leads to taking him where he was taken.

What does an offensive defenseman even mean though? A defenseman's role in any scheme should be to keep the puck in front of them since they are behind the rest of the team. Should be able to skate, and hold the puck. Blocking shots can be optional if you can play man to man and shut a center/winger down. Offensive means he can score? Assist? Every defenseman should be able to pass the puck. Passing the puck to a guy who scores gives you an offensive point. If ivan provorov gave jeff carter the puck in 2010 and got a bunch of assists would that make him an offensive defenseman?

Bonk may be the true upside pick v most of the alternatives.
Because he's currently seriously undersized, there's more growth potential physically, and that could have a significant impact on his future value..
He's not had a chance to play a primary role on offense, so that's another avenue to improve.
But you're gambling on projection.

Perrault for example, is more of a known quantity.

Holy f***. (I said "Holy" because #Lore.)

Didn't seem to be any problem with player development last season.
Unless you think Wylie had untapped talent.

Foerster, Lycksell, Desnoyers, York, Zamula, Attard, Ginning, Ersson all progressed in LHV last season.
Wisdom regressed a bit, but coming off injury.
Wylie and Hogberg went nowhere, but did they have anywhere to go.

While I preferred other players at 22, isn’t Bonk arguably Canada’s top 18yr old defenseman? London as well as the national team will have a vested interest in giving him plenty of top minutes and international playing time which will help with developing him. Also if his upside is between a #2-#4 defenseman, doesn’t that put him in the Povorov/Sanheim mold? Hopefully with characteristics we can rally around.

Except Provorov and Sanheim didn't have 2-4 upside exactly. And our development hasn't gotten any better to help Bonk reach that potential.

Most of that happened in your head, which is full of bong smoke at the best of times.
