Still think the flyers won the provy trade. Also, from all I've seen and read, Bonk will be less infuriating than risto. I know, not a high ask, but as long as they grab 2-3 top talents in the next two drafts it shouldn't matter that they lose out on Perreault or cristall.

This seems contradictory; the "defensive specialist" with a 72 rating on offense and 49 on defense?

we are a strange people. our default reaction is misery.
I said to my wife after the Michkov pick that I was having trouble processing happiness about a hockey outcome.

HockeyProspect.com had him at 16

yeah but they had Perreault at 9 too..
You do understand that, right?

and this is what "everyone/someofus" were saying, we could have done A LOT better. Perreault and Michkov would be a steal. We do not NEED to specifically target D we are rebuilding and we must take the best player available and Bonk was not the best talent available. imo of course.

You add that to the prospects forwards and young players what we already have ...

I'm hoping he can become a type of Hjalmarsson player. I always thought he was an underrated part of that Blackhawks team.

I really wanted Perrault. A player with his brain, pedigree, and stats can really overcome skating issues, just like his old man. His floor is 3rd line center and ceiling first line. Granted, his dad put up ridiculous numbers in junior which never translated to the NHL, but he weas a sound player for years.

I definitely would have preferred Perreault here and that seems to be what everyone everywhere is saying. That being said, I really don't think this is a BAD pick. Perreault's ceiling is definitely higher but it also seems less likely he will make it there. If Bonk pans out as he should, even if he doesn't meet his top potential, he should still be a good second pair defenseman.

Swinging for the fences is fine and it is early in the rebuild, but you need safe picks too. In a few years the Rags may have a steal and we have a bust, or Bonk could be a key component to a deep playoff run given his size and purported defensive prowess. It is said ad nauseum that players of Bonk's ilk are needed to make that deep run. I know on this board anyone over six feet is seen as just an old hockey dinosaur who doesn't fit in today's NHL, but look at teams that go deep, most of them have a player or two like Bonk (or what we hope Bonk, will be anyway) on their blueline.

100% with you and everyone else that if I am making that pick it is Perreault. But there's far worse outcomes than taking a guy that pretty much everyone agrees will be a good NHL defender over a guy who might be a better NHL forward.

Remember the old HockeysFuture ratings? Perrault is a 9/7.5 and Bonk is an 8/10 or however they used to do it. I'm cool with that.

Picking Bonk over Perreault is not a great move, we basically did what Arizona did at #5.

Perreault seem less likely to make it but if Bonk pans our we are good?

Anyway, it is what it is.

Bonks ceiling is a player you can trade for or sign via fa. Thats a bad pick in my eyes especially in this draft. We are at the beginning of a rebuild. We need difference maker. Bonk will be a filler you can get 2 times a season. Its useless to go with a player like bonk that early in the draft and in the rebuild

Based on Briere’s comments, it seems like they went with who they had as the Best Defender Available vs the Best Player Available. Not a fan of that approach.
I’m not either but the bottom line is they felt they had to add someone who projects out as a top 4D, because they just don’t feel they have them, and they’re actually more worried about that than their high end forwards.

Bob McKenzie had him ranked at #28. This isn't some crazy off the wall pick. People here value hockey IQ and then when a kid is drafted for it they start complaining? This forum is bipolar.

Perreault fell through the draft not just by the Flyers.

Edit: Before someone chimes in inevitably, this isn't an appeal to Bob McKenzie. It's just a statement of a knowledgeable hockey person's ranking.

I don't think this is a great move either, but it isn't the disaster people are making it out to be. Perreault all day long here. But, Perreault is an undersized player whose biggest issue sounds like his skating. I would take that risk at 22 every day of the week, shit I was wondering earlier this offseason why there wasn't more buzz around him at 7. But Bonk is definitely a safer pick and yes, if Bonk pans out we are good. If he is a good second pair defender in 3-4 years, that is a good thing. Obviously we want every pick to be a star but that isn't realistic and taking the safe pick doesn't mean it is the bad pick.

Last year they took a swing on Gauthier for his high ceiling despite the bust potential. This year they took a safer bet with Bonk. Not a good pick, certainly not a great pick, but the typical doom and gloom is very much an overreaction.

More info on Bonk for you:

I get at heart people are fans and have to talk themselves into every pick, but why can't people have an opinion that doesn't match that? Has this organization inspired that much confidence? I mean look at the defensemen they have targeted over the last 3 years, both at the draft and at the NHL level. Not exactly a modern approach. And any time a team hints publicly that they drafted for need, antennas should go up.

And for all of the talk of "Hockey IQ" and "smarts" being the reason he was drafted, the guy that went right behind him is viewed by many as one of THE smartest players in the draft. And had historic production.

Bonk is also another January birthday if you are keeping score at home. It's becoming a trend.

I didn't have ES data this year, but was surprised Bonk had as much PP production as he did. Almost half of his points and half of his assists were on the PP this year. He'll be PP1 next year in London which is always a good spot to be, but maybe not as much point production upside as suggested earlier.
