I don’t see why Frost can’t be the 4c to start the season. Couts/Hayes/Laughton/Frost I’d pencil in to start the year if the roster is healthy. If Frost does really well you can promote him to 3c and if he struggles you try him out at wing. Brassard I’d guess would start the season as the 13th forward so he will get a lot of time this season because of injuries.

In your scenario, where is Thompson? I honestly do not believe they will waive him for Game 1. He will be on the roster, either as a starter or #13 (most likely, IMO).

And I believe Brassard will also be a starter for Game 1.

NAK or Allison will be the ones to lose a spot to Frost, if it happens (again, IMO).

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see a minor trade moving NAK for a mid-round pick.

I think you guys are being a tad too pessimistic.
If Frost looks that good, I’m sure they’ll find a spot for him.

If this really is some “tough love” “earn your spot” crap and they send him down at the beginning of the season in favor of Thompson or Brassard or someone, that would suck, but I can’t imagine it would be for that long. Injuries will inevitably happen. The washed up guys will probably look like crap.

it’ll work itself out. If Frost takes the next step he’ll be here. my biggest concern is that they just don’t think he’s very good.

I’d go with something like this to start the season.

Giroux/Couts/Farabee
JVR/Hayes/Atkinson
Lindblom/Laughton/TK
“ “/Frost/Allison

Brassard/Thompson/NAK/Laczynski

I am hoping a younger player will step up and take the 4LW spot but if not I might be leaning to give it to NAK. Maybe Brassard can play wing, but I want to try Frost out at center first because I’d like him to be the future 3c here. If Frost does struggle this season at center then Brassard should come in and be the 4c. Either way this team at least has some nice options at forward and can do many different lineups.

Frost has played 4 periods of hockey in 18 months & is coming off major surgery. Let him get his feet wet in the AHL.

Got Lindblom in there twice. Those 6 would be battling for the last 3 spots I thinks. With that, I would imagine Allison has the inside edge on a spot, leaving the rest to battle for the final 2.

Whoops!

9 guaranteed spots: G - Couts - TK - JVR - Hayes - Atkinson - Lindblom - Farabee - Laughton
2 close to locks: Allison, Brassard
so Frost, NAK, Laczynski, Thompson fighting for 1 spot

I think playing 10-12 minutes a night instead of 15 will do wonders for Brassard.

Thompson will be the 13th forward in the press box, he'll play less than half the games at 8-10 minutes a night, basically his role is to avoid calling up players from LHV for short-term injury replacements (i.e. messing with their development by yo-yo'ing them).

If Laczynski is 100% and shines in camp, they may waive or send down Thompson. Laczynski would rotate in with Brassard and Allison (can play C and RW).

NAK is on the bubble, can't waive him without losing him, but not sure he has a role on this team, so a trade might be his future - but injuries happen.

It all comes down to Frost, he made the roster last year with weaker competition, this year he has first dibs on 3C, but it won't be given to him like the way Patrick was allowed to stink out the joint, hoping he'd turn it around. He's not competing with Thompson or Brassard, but with himself, if he doesn't show enough, off to the AHL and Laughton becomes the 3C.

In his 14 game cameo, Allison was the best player on the Flyers.
He's their best shooter, or at least tied with Farabee, with TK (lack of accuracy) coming in 3rd.
He's also showed the willingness to play 200 feet and use his big body.
I'd be shocked if Allison doesn't make this team.

Any chance we get lucky and hit on a late-round gem with Fedotov? What would it take to bring him over next season?

I don't think Sandstrom is the answer, and Ersson and Ustimenko may be a few more years away.

Possibly Fedotov could come over to back up Hart. Not sure what he's getting paid in the KHL, but 2 x $2m would be a reasonable deal IMO. He turns 25 in November, so he can't sign an ELC anymore.

How do Entry-Level Contracts Work?

Players younger than 25 years of age as of September 15 during the year of their first NHL contract must sign an entry-level contract which have set limitations - all entry-level contracts are two-way contracts and the maximum allowable salary for players drafted until 2022 is $925,000.

The length of the entry-level contract is also dependent on the player’s age:
  • 18-21 years of age: 3 years
  • 22-23 years of age: 2 years
  • 24 years of age: 1 year

That may explain why some kids stay in school, if the alternative is college or the AHL at $80K or so, if your family isn't struggling, college can be lower pressure and more fun, and you're not giving up a lot of money unless you're a top prospect like Farabee or York. And it seems the Flyers work out agreements with players to stay, Kalynuk and Marody were the only ones to flee the chicken coop, and they knew early (why they traded Marody).

Fedotov was a late bloomer, as a KHL backup until recently, he probably wasn't making a lot of money, but he only broke out the last couple seasons. Given he's 6'8, it's not surprising he needed to physical mature to develop the body control to be a top goalie prospect. Flyers have the luxury of seeing how he develops this year, along with Ersson and Ustimenko, then make a decision.

He kind of tailed off more than people seem to recall. But his personality was sorely needed.

so Frost, NAK, Laczynski, Thompson fighting for 1 spot
I can see Laczynski going down to LV since he is coming off of hip surgery. The FO will want to see him play for a bit and remain healthy before committing him to a spot in Philly. NAK is easily replaceable. Need more scoring from his spot on the roster and less PM taken. Waived or traded depending on demand.
So it's really down to Frost or Thompson. With what has been stated by Fletcher about his love for vets, Frost will be apartment shopping in the Allentown area along with Laczynski.
One good thing going for Frost and Laczynski is that vets like Thompson are older and more prone to injury.

I have no problem with Tanner starting in the AHL.

NAK's scoring is perfectly fine for his cap hit, assuming he bounces back closer to 20-21 levels. In that season he was actually one of our most efficient producers at 5v5. I agree on the penalties but it's too soon to give up on him. He provides good cheap depth.

He scored 6 points in his last 5 games , what the heck were you watching .

Come on. His last few games he wasn’t as good. Maybe he got points in a couple, but his play wasn’t as good. I say this as an Allison fan who wants him on the team.

I think it's interesting that Allison supposedly tailing off is no big deal, but Frost hitting one cold streak warrants making his path to the roster as onerous as possible, always.
Frost has played 4 periods of hockey in 18 months & is coming off major surgery. That’s not a cold streak.

Throwing him into a lower league filled with goons who want to make a name for themselves with big hits on talented players is not safer, and it does not get him to the NHL level he needs to be at. He is better than Thompson. That is all that matters.

However, I am talking about the reaction to his last NHL stint and how his play dropping off was used to defend obviously bad decisions. Now suddenly, the rookie cold streak doesn't matter. Allison doesn't need to be in the AHL.

He scored 3 goals 3 assists all at even strength was first star and third star all in last 5 games . Did you even watch the games , come on .
Yeah, I watched. What were those? 2 of the last 5?

What I want to happen:

Giroux - Couturier - Konecny
Farabee - Hayes - Atkinson
JVR - Frost - Allison
Lindblom - Laughton - NAK
Brassard

Provorov - Ellis
Sanheim - Ristolainen
York - Braun
Yandle

What will likely happen:

Giroux - Couturier - Farabee
TK - Hayes - Atkinson
JVR - Laughton - Lindblom
Brassard - Thompson - Allison
NAK

Provorov - Ellis
Sanheim - Ristolainen
Yandle - Braun
