I have this feeling that a change of scenery will help him reach his potential, and will surprise us. No one in Buffalo has played well. Maybe the D isn’t coached to succeed? I don’t know…but Dahlin was a consensus #1 overall and was -30 in a season too.

There is a side of me that wants to believe this may be the case, but I remain quite hesitant.

Not to say that players can't improve once being moved onto better clubs with improved coaching and developmental systems. That's the key though, people will proclaim what a gulag Buffalo is - but when it comes to getting the most out of their defensemen, are the Flyers one of the better clubs at doing so?

Hagg does fall into the "bust" category. Ghost at one time seemed to be poised to be a key member of a promising future, and injuries were not the only factor as to why he's now a member of the Coyotes. Myers, a guy who is the one I lament losing most - a player who truly flashed his potential, great skating, size, and a physical edge. Was taught to fling the puck up immediately upon retrieval not maximizing those gorgeous legs of his to help in transition. Provorov has his photo next to "stagnation" in the dictionary, and then Sanheim. Have his skills been fully harvested? A look at his PP time would lead to a quick no.

The point being that while Rasmus may have a chance to elevate himself to respectable. I have my doubts it happens under Vigneault's Flyers.

On the topic of defensemen, I get a feeling they value York a lot more than Zamula. Personally, and albeit with limited viewing - I think Egor could be the better player with the right coaching and development.

Maybe if Risto was one of the better dmen in a horrid situation I'd have hope. But he wasn't. He wasn't a decent player being dragged down. He was in the argument for worst player on that team. He was the one doing the down-dragging. He didn't shine relative to his teammates in the same situation...he stank.

Its where I defer to the powers that be.

Don't really have the interest in exploring/learning analytics but clearly they have value. In my limited viewing, because who with a sane mind watches Buffalo, other than a dominatrix - he didn't look good.

He's definitely going to endear himself to the coaching staff by mystical intangibles, respectable on ice play would be my hope. Shall see of course.

Most of you guys on here will get a kick out of this :
On the weekend I ran into an Ex NHLer turned coach /developer . We got talking Flyers and I asked him about their coaches { he had played for two of them } .
He said AV is too arrogant and thought he was above the players so a is poor communicator because of it but did know his shit .
Therrion , was a pos and the worst coach he had ever played for . I would go on about Therrion but there would be to many bleeps . Said he is the one that needs to go .
He thought Yeo was okay but did not know how much say he would have with what went on .

So most on here got things figured out pretty well as far as the coaching goes .

If you listen to Spitting Chicklets at all you will know there is a very long list of ex-players with that opinion and they are all happy to let people know about it.

He's played a lot of games. 542, to be exact. This isn't an unknown quantity.

This is silly talk. A new team gives you a magic reset button. It means you revert to prospect status and all your previous potential has the ability to be realized again.

Kidding aside, I wouldn't be surprised if Risto looks better than he did in Buffalo. He's going to have a much better team around him (as a whole) and play with a much better defenseman than he's played with previously. Quality of teammates is immensely important and he'll get an upgrade in that department.

That said, anyone expecting him to come in and magically become a top pair d man (and make no mistake, that's the price we paid), is blindly wishing. I don't want Risto to fail, but having the mindset that he's going to come in and suddenly become what he was supposed to be is setting yourself up for failure. We have 8 years of data to guide us to this decision. We don't need to rely on blind faith and hope.

Would you rather burn to death or drown?

Would you rather watch Ristolainen or Hagg?

Would you rather burn to death or drown in the north Atlantic in the winter time as the cruise ship sinks?

Would you rather watch Ristolainen at 5mil and a first and second or Hagg at 2 mil?

Over the last 3 seasons, Ristolainen is 12th among all NHL defensemen in primary assists.

That puts him above players like Chabot, Petry, Doughty, Suter, Theodore, Girard, Giordano, Ekholm, & Hamilton.

I’m sure many of those A1s were on the PP, but same goes for everyone above & around him.

Point is, Hagg is a very poor comparison. Ristolainen has much more offensive ability. He’s also meaner, & the Flyers needed to add meanness on D.

We’ll see how he plays defensively, but he sure won’t be worse than Myers in that regard, while bringing more skill & a better physical presence.
