I wasn't referring to what was best for the development of Quinn or Peterka. I'm not blaming those two for us not making the playoffs. I do think that, since we weren't planning on playoffs, there was zero issue with Quinn and Peterka on the roster. Now for next season, adding a couple of teenagers in a conference which is vet heavy and extremely physical shouldn't be the blueprint for us making the playoffs next season. Defense includes forward play, not just the D pairs.
I'd say Buffalo's lack of a push for a competitive team this year, looking at it as a development year, is why I'm not too angry at their decision to bring the guys up they did. But eventually the organization will need to look at their main roster as the final destination for their prospects, and not a tool to develop players early in their careers. Based on their own timeline they were able to afford to punt these past 2.5 seasons. They seemingly punted a defensive structure development possibly into next season where the players don't have the best habits established, and that's why I don't want how Quinn, Power, Cozens, JPP, were developed to be applied to the next wave of players.

The correct question on Rosen is where does he fit? That currently doesn't have an answer, but who knows what'll change over the next 2-3 years. That's why he's the best value/easiest to envision in trade scenarios.

Saying Rosen is bad/a wasted pick, however, is simply nonsense. He was one of the Swedes' best players at the WJC, outplaying guys like Lysell, Lekkiermakki, Ohgren. He's had a solid D+2 season, first in America, after a rocky D+1 with injuries.

He has speed only Savoie can match org wide, and a NHL-level shot. There's dev work to be done, he isn't close to the NHL, but he's far from a 'wasted pick' He's an A-tier prospect that might be expendable for D/G help.
2 are from a later draft, lysell...

The whole size and slight build thing for prospects is weird to me. Not every prospects looks like Rod Brind'Amour as an 18 year old. I'd argue that nearly all 18 year olds are slight. Anyone see what Dahlin looked like at this rookie combine? Not exactly and NHL physique.

Plus, the NHL as a whole seems to be trending shorter and somewhat lighter as well. There's a reason guys like the Tkachuks and Meiers and those are treated like unicorns right now -- they are.

Those heavier guys are being taken sooner and sooner in the drafts and teams aren't giving them up without a king's ransom.

You can never have too much skill on a team. Rosen will be a top 9 player. He's still very young and filling into his body.
You can lack "non-skill" elements if you focus on "skill" too much when you look at a complete roster.

An example of that would be thinking about whether Ekholm or Erik Karlsson would have been a better fit in the Sabres top 4 D. Karlsson has more "skill", but I believe that Ekholm would have been a much better fit for what the Sabres need in their top 4 D.

Agree, and I think there's a difference between the prospect pipeline and the actual NHL roster. I'll always be good with Adams taking BPA, letting that player develop, and then moving assets with value for roster improvement.

That all comes with a lot of patience, and some discretion. No way I'm trading Savoie of Kulich. Rosen is tradable. All three 1st rounders but it's easy to see who really fits the NHL roster well. That Sabres are full of skilled wingers. They don't have dynamic playmaking centers of Savoie's caliber, and Kulich is so advanced physically that he's going to have an impact.

It's also why I'm ok with Granato going with non-traditional lines for a season or two. I've got no issues with Savoie and Kulich on a non-traditional "4th" line next season, and helping them develop. At that point, if Adams is interested in moving Mittelstadt, Jost, etc and allowing Savoie and Kulich to play on the "3rd" line, and getting some traditional grinders, then I'm fine.

It has to be done right through. I've got no interest in trading Rosen for a player like Hathaway just because of roster construction.

This team is totally different without Samuelsson. I don’t think it is because he is so good (although, I do think he is good). I think it is because we have bad depth and any of our top 3 defenseman (read: the only solid NHL-caliber defenseman on the roster) missing time makes it so AHL players are in way over their heads, getting too many minutes.

Adams could have done a better job bringing in depth this past offseason. Most of this board was begging him to find a veteran partner for Power. They were too sold on Joker being the answer, when I don’t think that was warranted.

Welp, which prospect development path are we going to argue about for the next 4 days?
Oh, I thought we were going to be arguing about whether or not Ryan Johnson is going to sign?

And if not, we'd argue about whether GMKA screwed the pooch by not trying to move him at the trade deadline? Or whether the 2nd round pick we'd get next year is more valuable.

Plenty, and I mean PLENTY, of things for the boards to argue about!

Ok good. I didn't want to get bored. At least we're not already arguing about the best prospect that may fall to our draft spot. Not rigorously anyway.

I’m resigned to hoping that Adams’s (don’t say cheap) “I don’t want to block kids” line means jettisoning Olofsson into the Sun so the spot is open for camp. Use this backwards thinking nonsense for good instead of hurting your franchise

Assuming KA finds a way to dump VO, given the current roster, you have 10 F (assuming Rousek re-signs), how many AHL's are ready to move up opening day (Kulich. Ostend, Rosen), and how many vets need to re-sign.......maybe 2?

So who do you take?

Girgs ~$1.8 - 2.0m
Jost ~ $1.7 - 2.0m
KO ~$2.5 - 3.0m
Hino ~$1.3 - 1.4m ( or maybe even 2-way $800k/$350k)
Free Agent ~$1.75-$2.5m

Rousek gets a goal and an assist, extremely active throughout the game.

His reward? Being benched for the next game so Greenway can play.

Boo! I SAY BOOO!! :thumbd:
Lol I just updated my post saying the same thing... I am ok with Greenway getting minutes its Olofsson playing over Rousek that drives me crazy...

Icing those 10 plus small/skill guys like Savoie/Kulich/Rosen just isn't going to happen. It's asking to get caved in.

It's not simply a case of picking just one of those options you listed. More like 2 or 3 of them at the same time.

If the NHL was a real league they would encourage skill over unskilled thugs clutching and grabbing and legislate them and that style out of the league the way the NBA did. That's why NBA summer league games draw 4x more viewers than the Stanley Cup Finals.

Since he's is an injury recall and the Amerks have a game tomorrow against Cleveland that they need, I'm mildly surprised they kept him around for another day.
