the dude has (substance ?) issues, no team is taking that chance at his salary (as many are up against the cap, so they would need to clear other players)Vrana just passed through waivers and is much more proven.
Only 11 teams have the cap space to claim him outright without using LTIR
He has a career high of 25 points and 12 goals and he's year D+6. A team would have to have a pretty specific need and plenty of cap space for a project player IMHO.
It very well may be a paper transaction. Who knows?
Not sure there is one outside of the 4 max after TDLPaging @dotcommunism
How many transactions to teams get per season? I looked it up, but running out of time and need to start driving in a few.
thanks!
not a correct statementNoboby trades unprotected 1st rounders anymore. Why are Sabres fans, whose team is far form guaranteed to make the playoffs, so willing to put them into proposals?
No way. Ekholm isn't worth de-protecting our 2023 1st for, much less adding a bit of a unicorn in Bloom (As far as our own prospect pool goes). I'd be willing to add something for protecting our 1st if we end up in the lottery though.
Lotto protected 2023 1st, flips to unprotected 2024 1st

VGK 2nd if they don't get our 1st in 2023
But here come the real Sabres.![]()
NHL playoff tiers and buyer/seller 2.0: Where does each team stand as we approach trade season?
As we approach the NHL season's midpoint, which teams look like they'll need a deadline boost and which ones are ready to call it a day?theathletic.com
Giving away your first rounder if you're the Sabres with their draft track record outside of the first round essentially means punting away that respective draft.Noboby trades unprotected 1st rounders anymore. Yeah, JJ Peterka and Mattias Samuelsson are trash.Giving away your first rounder if you're the Sabres with their draft track record outside of the first round essentially means punting away that respective draft.
A combination of good scouting, analytics, and development programs, is something the Sabres have not had together until recently. I don't think we should be judging our future drafts based on the track record of people and organizational systems that are no longer in play.Giving away your first rounder if you're the Sabres with their draft track record outside of the first round essentially means punting away that respective draft.
Typo, wishful thinking or I missed a trade ?Few thoughts on the Sabres, not an over-reaction to last night's loss to the Flyers.
- Granato is riding the decades-old hockey success formula: have a great scoring line and follow up with a line that has a great center. It's serving the Sabres well.
- Having a trio like Dahlin, Power, and Samuelsson is going to continue to help drive the team. I'm not sure I remember a team with this type of group. Nashville?
- The kids are doing well, all-in-all
Some thoughts on what I'd do from here for forwards:
- Quinn and Peterka seem to be hitting the rookie wall. I'd paper move them to Rochester when Ullmark plays, and start to let them sit a bit. Rotate in Asplund and Hinostroza.
- Along with the pervious thought, Adams needs to start thinking about reinforcing the Jost line. If Olofsson is playing the way he is, it's good. When Olofsson is floating, the Sabres are reliant on the Thompson line, Cozens, and Dahlin to score. They don't get a lot of secondary scoring, with Mittelstadt's recent run being the exception.
With these two points, here's what I'd do:
- Let the kid line stay together when Anderson or Comrie starts, and UPL gets paper moved to Rochester. When UPL is starting, rotate Quinn or Peterka to Rochester with a paper move. Krebs can be sat as well using a paper move.
- When one of the kids is out, rotate Mittelstadt up with Cozens and the rookie. That'd leave some combination of Olofsson, Jost, Asplund, and Hinostroza as a line. That's ok.
Some thoughts on what I'd do from here for defensemen:
- I think Adams found a good one in Clague, but I don't think he's a true top 4 defenseman. I'd much rather slot him as a 5/6 3rd pair type who can give the team reliable minutes.
- You can see some fatigue setting in, especially with Samuelsson. It's a lot to ask a 22 year old to take on a load which we usually see reserved for players like Hjalmarsson.
Here's what I'd do:
- When Jokiharju is healthy, Adams should send Fitzgerald to Rochester. I don't see him getting claimed, especially if Pilut didn't get claimed.
- I'd look for a trade to get a partner for Power. Fabbro is an ideal target. High end is Chychrun or Ekholm. Murphy and Gavrikov are others. Adams should really look to solidify his top 4.
- That's give the Sabres a rock solid top 4, give Samuelsson a little bit of a breather, and allow Granato to ice some combination of Clague, Jokiharju, Bryson, and Lyubushkin in the bottom pair, though one of them would likely be included in a trade.

Yeah, JJ Peterka and Mattias Samuelsson are trash.
The Sabres have signed five of the guys that have been drafted outside of the 1st round since Adams became GM.
2020 class: JJ Peterka
2021 class: Aleksandr Kisakov, Josh Bloom, Olivier Nadeau, and Tyson Kozak
