At what point does Granato break up the kid line? After a torrid 8 gms they've been bad.

Last 10 games they’ve combined for 1 goal for/5 against with CF% of 42% and xGF% of 44%.

I assume Donny is letting them play through this to see if they can snap out of it. But he needs to try other things if they don’t do it soon.
Switching line combos is pointless at this stage -- just let them work through it. Especially since you have another line struggling too and don't have many options that don't put the successful lines at risk.

If the point were to solely win games, they'd be riding the bench periodically like Laffy in new york until they're ready for full time responsibility. I think Adams see these struggles as money in the bank for the future, not something that needs to be fixed now with trades or line combinations.

They seem to be showing signs of coming out of it. Might just be a case of needing the floodgates to re-open.

That said.....what do you do? Can't break up the top line. Probably shouldn't break up the KOG line. So then you're left shuffling pieces and/or benching someone.

VO isn't getting benched. Neither is Mitts. So then you're looking at benching Quinn who has been conspicuous in his lack of form. Then what? Play Hino and watch him avoid the net at all costs? Play Asplund and hope that he re-gains form?

I'm not sure there's a right answer here...........or even a good option. Might be to the point where you ride with the kids until they truly show they're spent.

Given that the kids have never played a full season in the NHL, they're going to be prone to periods of fatigue. The schedule in January won't get any better, as it is a repeated gauntlet of 3 in 4 / 4 in 6. It's actually the perfect excuse to cycle the kids and struggling vets in and out of the press box if they were looking to rest certain players.

I doubt we see much change while they keep winning though.

Its not pointless at all. You may not want to do it but that doesn’t make it pointless.

Growth and development doesn’t mean try nothing

I think it is healthy to sit players every so often and let them watch from the pressbox when they are struggling. It is a teaching moment and should not be thought of as punishment. VO should take a seat right now, and the staff should be showing him film and helping him to see the difference in his game this season from the end of last season, when he was much more effective. Give him a reset of sorts.

We also shouldn't expect too much from Hino or Asplund in returning from sitting for weeks. I think we take that for granted that all players should just play at their top level after sitting for long stretches, which is unrealistic.

I really don’t care what they do, as long as they’re developing and getting better. Granato generally hasn’t used line combination switches to get guys going - he does it very rarely, and does it less as the season goes on. He’s said as much more than once.

If a guy needs to get going, they address that through practice, not swapping line mates. Especially when 3 forwards are all struggling at the same time.

Wasn't he starting to look better right before the extended break? I have a distinct memory of him putting together 2 solid games in a row and was thinking that maybe he was coming out of it.

And then he's been terrible since the break.

VO could benefit from a change of scenery.

Nashville has had an anemic power play for years. Fabbro is getting healthy scratched.

Preds fans were meh on VO but he'd slot right in on their PP1, right?

VO (salary retained to make it work) + VGK 2nd
for
Fabbro

NSH fans said Fabbro was great holding down the fort paired with Josi. He was junior teammates with Jost, another reclamation project who is turning out well here.

Alternatively, if BUF keeps three goalies soon, how about:

VO (retained salary) + BUF 2nd
for
2024 or 2025 1st from NSH, CAL or another poor PP team on the cusp of playoff contention.

Some rotation isn't really benching players. I'm sure Peterka, Quinn etc would look better rested on a b2b. I wish we used the depth we have more.

Some numbers pulled down for this season, Ekholm vs. Chychrun, borrowed from the Trade Board thread:

RAPM comparison, take it for what it's worth

I'm not concerned about Ekholm's age, he'd be a great add. I'd be extremely concerned about his cost, which I assume is significant.

I wonder if Nashville would do something around Ekholm and Fabbro?

If the Sabres want to really bolster their defense, and older Ekholm on the 3rd pair is something I think would work and work well.

I’m all aboard the Ekholm train.

Was hoping he’d reach FA and sign with the Sabres before the preds extended him fall of 2021.

I feel like the valuation for defensemen is broken right now because of the Risto and Chairot trades. Everybody thinks their d-man is worth a 1st + 2nd +++

I can't see them moving both without a quality blueliner coming back, even a prospect one. And sadly, the Sabres seem to be fresh out of those.

I'm terrible at trade valuations, but I'd assume they'd want a 1st+ minimum. What that plus is :dunno:

I think Ekholm's value is kinda what most have been pitching for Chychrun around here but knock the 3rd asset down a peg.

So a 1st, very good prospect, something with some value but not a ton

Lotto protected 23 1st that becomes unprotected in 24
Ostlund
3rd rounder

Something akin to that, I'd think.

No chance I'd give that much up for a 32 year old dman.

If we don't qualify Jost at 2.25, he becomes an UFA. Are we ineligible to sign him as an UFA if we don't qualify him as a RFA?
