It’s early, really early.

Nonetheless, I like to speculate.

Who’s the 1C when we’re competitive?
I don’t know if it’s a 1C that we need, but it does seem apparent that we don’t have, but really need, a top end forward.

We’ve built up some really nice depth, but it’s fair to say we don’t have a top 30 forward. Top 45? Top 60? Something Adams is going to need to figure out. We need an alpha up front.

I wish I knew. I would really like to find a RHD but I have no idea who is a good trade target without paying a ton...or who is really worth a ton.

Pesce...but I assume that's a pipe dream.
There is no chance that Carolina is trading Pesce who is 3rd in TOI/G this season for the Canes.

The challenge with trying to make a move now is that teams are not looking to move D, especially RHD, unless it is a guy that is getting healthy scratched and would only be an upgrade if it was a home run change of scenery move.

Bear & CDH are the two D on the Canes that might be available...
Maybe some kind of universal defensemen. Or a defensemen who could well play in the top 4, but in his team he is blocked in the third pair.

Girard is probably not quite what you need, but he is a legit top 4. With Makar, Toews, Byram and Manson, he does not play in the top 4.

Chychrun (although I think it will be too expensive and may not be exactly what we need)

Guys like DeMelo and Soucy.

Scott Mayfield (locked in the third pair)

Dumba and Severson

Probably not the most popular options Bear and Bean.

Why a RD?

are you fine with

Samuelson-Dahlin
Power-Joki/Lyub
Bryson-Joki/Lyub
Pilut-Fitzgerald

#1 PP unit needs to be..

Dahlin
Olofsson-Mitts-Tage
Tuch

VO and Tage give you that duel shooter threat on the half walls.
Mitt is a great passer in tight spaces and just think he'd be better than skinner at the bumper spot.

#2 unit

Power
JJ-Krebs-Quinn
Cozens

Obviously this unit is unlikely and doubt they'll all be in the line up at the same time but at some point you need to let the kids develop some chemistry.

Game changing offensive forward tops my list as well, and by the end of this year, it should be clear who's who in current forward lineup, and a big move should be considered.

Don't know who to go after yet though. Pettersson if vancouver implodes is my only idea right now.

I'm not a big fan of the 1-3-1 PP set up with a bumper. Too static and too much reliance on shooting from the umbrella, and cross-ice passes.

I like the 1-3-1 where a forward plays below the goalline, and the center of the powerplay is either net front or slot, depending on the where the puck is. Washington uses this setup well.

For PP1, put Mittelstadt below the goalline (Backstrom's spot). Thompson at the left half wall and Dahlin at the point. Tuch in the center. Krebs would work well on the right half wall (Kuzy's spot).

For PP2, reserve the idea, with Olofsson as the shooter from the right half wall. Power at the point. Cozens in the center. Quinn at the left half wall, where he can pass or shoot. Peterka can play below the goal line.

Don't know about Pettersson... I get major Eichel vibes from Pettersson.

Peters on with Kyper and Bourne now, hawking his new show/podcast on Sportsnet. Likely a bit on the Sabres again - they were talking up Dahlin a few minutes ago.

If the rumors were true, they were interested in Robertson, it tell's you something.

Just don't let Vanek on about Dahlin :D

It needs to be a center. Tage - Cozens - Mitts should not be the long term center spine, even if a star winger is added.

The immediate priorities for improvement are:

- defensive zone play
- allowing breakaways and odd-man rushes
- power play

Fixing the first two while down two top-4 d-men will be a significant challenge. Practice, and patience while injuries heal and young players develop is the best I can do.

Acquiring a truly elite forward is not urgent.

Did anyone say it was urgent? I think it's just noticing that Buffalo is the only team without an elite forward, and noting that it's going to eventually limit Buffalo's ability to become a true contender. Pletny of other things to focus on in the meantime.

If this team is perfectly built and is just an elite center away from contending, an elite center will eventually choose to be a Sabre.

I’m hoping CAR waives Bear and we claim him.

If I’m acquiring a Dman to fill in while Joki and Muel are out they need to be cheap, young, and have some potential to which outweighs Bryson and Fitzgerald

If they are considering Bear might as well see what we the deal could be for Bear + Gardiner.

I have no idea. In part because I don’t know what you consider a #1 center. Or how Things will play out with various players.

-Tage/Mitts are in the early stages of establishing themselves as top 6 centers. Tage is obviously much farther ahead than Mitts (delayed development due to injury).

-Cozens is in only his 2nd NHL season. His defensive prowess should give him a decent shot at a top 6 two way dynamo. IF, and only if, his offensive game grows to where it neeeds to be.

-The recently drafted kids with Savoie as the top of that heap at the moment.

By the end of the season we’ll have a better idea of where these players are at.

Trade for a Dman. We have so many assets. Relying on a 19 year old defenseman is a recipe for disaster
Power is going to play a ton whether we make a trade or not. He already was before Sammy or Joker get hurt.

He was already getting top minutes There is no one we are going to acquire in a trade that is going to cut down his ice time.

Yep. If they were to make a move, it would be to push someone out of the ice time below him (Pilut, Fitz) not limit Power's minutes.

Power will play in the top 4, but if Samuelsson and the Joker are out for a while, I think Adams will have to make a move.

Just a reminder that "making the playoffs" is not a specific goal for the franchise this season. Most of us expected us to be a competitive team this year that would not qualify for the playoffs. We are going to stay the course and any significant trades are extremely extremely unlikely before the trade deadline.

If they are on the shelf for 4-6 weeks, I do not know that Adams will make a move. I expect them to go with Next Man Up.

6. Surging Buffalo has a problem on defence. Mattias Samuelsson is out (although thankfully it’s not as bad as it initially looked). Henri Jokiharju is out. I could see GM Kevyn Adams examining what’s out there. You know when your team deserves help, and the Sabres sure are showing it.

Speaking of one guy that will be out there...

10. Bit longer of a timeline for Jakob Chychrun, a couple of weeks until he’s ready to play. A bit more conversation, but there’s zero doubt once he returns, he’s going to be a man possessed. Teams want to see him go out and be immediately impactful. One of the lurkers I think was the Islanders, but does it makes sense for them to give up draft picks right now?

I do not see the fit. And he certainly doesn't give the Sabres immediate help with Sammy & Joker out.
