I don't think the roster is nearly as much a problem as the awful coaching staff is. That absurd Too Many Men penalty was a perfect example of how disorganized and poorly coached this team is as it was something (in particular the fact that it wasn't a typical too many men call where an extra guy accidentally hops on the ice) that just should not happen at the NHL level.

Its not just the sample size that makes it of little value. But whats the context? How are they deployed?

Their OZS% is 71%. Fairly sheltered minutes for the times Johnson plays some shifts with Power.

Compare that to Power/Joker

Total minutes-> 167mins
OZS% -> 35%
xGF% -> 52%

Power/Joker have played FAR more difficult minutes togther and a lot more of them. When Ryan Johnson actually plays a lot of tough minutes, then we can see how things stand.


Not a fan of these stats because they can’t tell you very much by themselves . Yet they are used quite a lot to make all sorts of claims (Not saying you're doing that btw).

If you bring the cut off down to 28mins. Then you’d have Dahlin/Clifton as the 6th best xGF% in the NHL. Stats!

I don't know when Adams or Granato will come to the realization that they have their top 4 D for the future in place.

Just go 12/6 every player will tell you the same thing especially defenseman, playing 7D just doesn’t give players any ability to find chemistry.

Regarding Okposo and Girgs. They aren't that bad, the problem is that they are the 8th and 9th forwards by ice time. The roster needs an additional 4 forwards better than them to push them to 11th,12th respectively. We're missing a top 6 forward (Quinn) and an entire 3rd line (pictured below) to push them down to where they would ideally slot.

Neither does playing 3 goalies allow goalies to get a rhythm to see what we actually have but Adams and Granato are using this season as another development season. Its obvious Adams never wanted playoffs this season.

I think you just ride him out through the rough patch. He's a part of our core and will steady things down in due time. One of the few defenders I have faith in that for.

The 11-7 thing with 3 goalies is just an absolute embarrassment. Afraid to hurt Devon Levi’s feelings.

It’s such an easy call. Levi down, Kulich or Rosen up. Sit Clifton down. If Clifton makes a stink, we’ll find a partner for him. Jokiharju’s emergence has allowed for it.

Hell, if we’re out of it maybe EJ is willing to go back to Colorado or something if we hold onto half his salary. Just figure something out. A hard decision needs to be made.

They're doing it because of the PK and the forwards are beat up.

On defense …. I agree it can cause chemistry issues but they don’t want to disrupt their PK d-pairs.

At forward …. They figured out a way to get things going by sliding Girgs to center and have a rotation of left wingers.

Or we can look at it through the lens that they will be able to sign Benson to a longer term deal for cheaper because he’s had less time in the cooker.
