Glass Half-Full

- still early; no need to panic
- Tuch, Benson, and eventually Quinn, will provide a boost when they return
- Ryan Johnson is found money
- Jokiharju might have finally established himself
- Casey is picking up right where he left off
- PK is much improved
- Kulich and Rosen might surprise us this season
- Adams has the cap, prospects, and picks to make significant additions

Glass Half-Empty

- too many points have already been squandered against poor and mediocre teams
- as many feared, goaltending is not the position of strength Adams claimed
- Tage out for a long period, after just starting to roll
- Power is maddeningly inconsistent, with so much more to give
- please send out a search party for last year's Dylan Cozens
- PP is putrid
- Granato appears unable to get the team ready to play, to make useful in-game adjustments, to exploit timeouts

Conclusions

- we're in for another development year
- the coaching staff cannot take this young, decently talented team much further
- Adams needs to do more, before the playoffs are out of reach, again

Buffalo Sabres

Buffalo’s scoring rate on the power play has dropped by about 4.06 goals per 60 from year to year, which is the second biggest drop in the league behind only Washington.

The Sabres have only scored five goals on 45 opportunities to open the season. Like the two aforementioned teams, Buffalo went into the season with a similar PP1 to where it left off. Unlike the Stars and Oilers, the Sabres don’t have strong offensive generation to back them up either.

One of the biggest issues for the Sabres is how little they’re generating from inside the home plate area in front of the blue paint. They’re getting shots from the point, and Tage Thompson’s influence is showing just outside the faceoff dot. But Buffalo is very clearly lacking elsewhere. Maybe a stronger playmaker on PP1 would help increase the danger of the shots their leading contributors are taking. That’s why the coaches have switched up their two units to try and spark something.

Nice post agree on pretty much all points

Five red arrows

Teams: Colorado Avalanche, Buffalo Sabres

The most important rule about Tier 4 is there is no Tier 4, so we’re on to the five-arrow club.

We’re getting down to the wire here, and I think it’s neat that the two teams in the high-five group are in some sense mirror images. The Avalanche are the elite contender, with one championship already under their belt, trying to push back against the cap and Father Time to win a few more. The Sabres aren’t there yet, but hope they’re on the way.

Colorado’s core five includes the recently signed Nathan MacKinnon and Devon Toews, as well as Valeri Nichushkin and the injured Gabriel Landeskog. There’s also a fifth name that I’m willing to bet you won’t get. No, not Cale Makar, whose discount deal expires in 2027. It’s Miles Wood, whose $2.5 million cap hit makes him the cheapest member of the Red Arrow society.

As for the Sabres, they’ve locked in their young core of Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, Tage Thompson and Dylan Cozens, all of whom have big-dollar contracts that don’t feel too onerous. They’ve also rolled the dice on Mattias Samuelsson, whose $4.2 million cap hit through 2030 could be a bargain if he continues to develop.

Two teams, two approaches, two outcomes so far — but I’m guessing both are happy to score high when it comes to red arrows. High, but not the highest, because we’re not there yet.

Six red arrows

Team: Tampa Bay Lightning

Seven red arrows

Teams: Islanders

Huh.

I guess it makes sense. I mean, it doesn’t, but it’s Lou, so you get what I’m saying. And at least one of those red arrows is one that any team would be happy to have, as they’ve got Ilya Sorokin signed through 2032, one of only five contracts that extends that far. Every goalie is a gamble, but I think you take that one.

What's the Kane buzz? My friend (who never is swayed by the rumor mill) thinks he's signing in Buffalo. Something about him in town this week talking with Adams?

OK. Let's look at the bright side -- there's precedence to this.

05/06 Buffalo Sabres. Started 8-9. Danny Briere hurt, misses 3 months. Season over already.

We all know what happens next.

Maybe we can have history repeat? Maybe? Possibly? PLEASE I'M BEGGING.

There is another potential parallel to that 05-06 season that was rolling through my head during last night's game - we repeatedly got our asses kicked by a division opponent before figuring them out at the end of the year:

Although for that to be considered a "parallel" assumes we eventually figure out how to beat this Boston team, which seems like an impossible task at this point.

Let’s see if Adams is serious about making the playoffs this yr… lol

He's not. The priority was just be competitive and continue to grow. Signing Okposo in particular showed Buffalo is just a country club. A guy who would be hard-pressed to make another other team in the league, gets $2.5 M. Just a joke.

I must remind myself... they're only 3 points out of a wild card spot.

I must remind.... gah! I hate being a fan of Buffalo sports teams!

Any word yet on Tage replacement? I am guessing broken finger/hand usually around 6 weeks if its a finger some have come back quicker 3-4 weeks.

Who gets the callup from Rochester? Will they slide Tuch to center when he comes back?

Edit - moved to the Granato thread.

At this point I doubt the roster gets their shit together in time to make the playoffs. Tage got going but of course he's out. It's too much to overcome with so many other struggling players right now.

No need to slide someone to C. Mitts, Cozens, Krebs, and Jost will play C I would guess. Fill the winger spot with call up, kulich has earned a shot imo.

I’m starting to think Rob Rays hot mic moment of saying “Tuch is being held together by a piece of string” had more merit than people wanted to admit
He's with the team every day and knows these things. I believed him -- it's a big part of the reason why I want nothing to do with his next contract,
