Roster Thread (2023-2024 Season)

With the veteran limits in the AHL, I don't really see the Sabres spending a ton less on vets in Rochester.

Especially this season with Stillman spending the whole season in Rochester on a one-way deal paying him $1.35M and Jost spending 25 games in Rochester on his $2M one-way deal.

You also have Cecconi making $325k, Davies making $425k, Clague making $475k, Murray making $250k with a $300k guarantee, Biro making $300k, and Weissbach making $125k in Rochester. So, they have not just had guys making less than $100k on ELCs in Rochester this season.
I wasn’t trying to say their roster is filled with ELC players - but just that they’ve benefitted by having so many. Of course they’re going to still have some vets.

Just curious, would Sabres fans be interested in Ross Colton in the off-season? He’s a chippy, ~0.5ppg, 3C that is 27 signed for 3 more years at $4m. Colorado needs cap space if they want to sign Drouin, who in my opinion adds significantly more value and is likely to sign a very team friendly contract with Colorado. The Avs would want picks or prospects back. Last off-season Colorado traded a high second round pick in what is considered to be a very deep draft.

Would the Sabres have interest in Colton and if so, what sort of picks/prospects are would they be willing to give up?

Yes, Buffalo should be very interested. I don't necessarily agree that COL management will want to make the same tradeoff though.

With all of the prospects Buffalo has, I'm sure they could find a deal that works. What are the needs in the prospect system?

When does his NTC kick-in?

I think fans in Colorado have given up too early on Colton. Having tp pretend to be a 2C prior to Mittlestadt's acquisition exposed some of his deficiencies. But he is a scrappy, intense 3rd line player who doesn't take shifts off and would help the Sabres lineup. And possibly locker room as well.

Beats keeping Jost.

I suspect Colorado can't afford him next season. Drouin WILL be resigned...

So you think COL would bail on Colton to sign Drouin? Kind of a head scratcher, but man, I'd give up quite a but for Colton on the Sabres side. He'd basically be just what we're looking for, though I don't know how good he is on faceoffs.

Edit: just checked, he's very solid on faceoffs.

I think a lot of it hinges around Landy’s future. If he’s back I think the Avs should clear room to accommodate him. Colton is the easiest at the moment, although Manson or Girard could also be potential candidates to be traded.

His NTC should be kicking in July 1st, then goes down to a M-NTC next season.

The Avs would likely be looking for forward help. Do something around Krebs might work, but would be open to ideas.

Both him and Wood started the season on fire in terms of play, however they’ve really tapered off since LOC got hurt. He’s definitely a high end 3C, but I’m not sure Colorado has the luxury to have a high end 3C making $4m.

Drouin has been consistently one of the Avs best players particularly the second half of the season. He started off the season with 1 point in the first 10 games. From there he’s put up 55 points in 66 games, while playing tenacious responsible hockey (something every Avs fan is shocked to see). If Drouin signs with Colorado for $4m the Avs might have another ppg player on their hands.

Colton is great, but again he is a bit of a luxury and with Ritchie in the pipeline I think the Avs look to address some other holes and load up on assets to make more deadline moves.

How about:
'24 2nd
'25 3rd

for Ross Colton?

Jeez, they might make great trade partners. Krebs+ would be a perfect start. I think Buffalo adds because Colton is signed for several years.

Could be the makings of another win-win trade between the two teams!

I’m likely being greedy, but would want a touch more. Any chance you’d consider bumping it to 2 seconds or a top 10 protected first in 2025?

I did throw Krebs name out there, but I guess I meant it as more of the potential type of player, I unfortunately haven’t noticed him much in the 10 or so Sabres games I’ve watched. How has he been? I see offensively it looks like he’s regressed a touch.

He sure hasn't been impactful offensively, but he's been good defensively, and is one of our only players with a lot of grit, despite his average size. He shows offensive flashes that look like he could break out any day, but we've been waiting so long that we're starting to wonder if he'll ever break out offensively.

A 2025 protected 1st round pick sounds great too.

Yes. Drouin is at the top of his game now. Full of confidence and he's not the Montreal washout we all remember.

MacKinnon's best buddy is staying put.

Colorado cannot afford all of the nice shiny toys it has in its toy box next season. Rantanen will need a new contract and Landeskog will be back.

I'd probably give up more than most folks would for Colton. Let's make it happen!

I think 2 2nds would be fair, a 1st is certainly being greedy

Krebs has had a rough season... When he first got here you saw the offensively skill set with great vision, even got solid time on the PP but since the Sabres were loaded with younger offensive players, the org tried to turn him into a 4th line, defensive center. He's had chances to prove himself in bigger rolls and has been able to get going but I think he can still be a middle 6 center in the right situation.

This is what I’m thinking too. A lot comes down to Landy, but all things are point towards him being back next season. If that’s the case the Avs need to find roughly $7m to move around. Players like Girard, Manson, Wood, Colton and Lehkonen could all become available to help move around cap space.

Yes. If I recall you were the one that proposed Byram + Colton for Mitts, and I was one of the only few that was happy with that deal.

I was pointing out that he could, in fact, sign with another team.
He could retire, as well. However, I do not believe that is a realistic outcome for what happens with Jokiharju this offseason.

For me, if it isn't talking about what kind of contract he might sign with the Sabres or if Adams will trade him, then it isn't likely enough for me to really spend any time or energy contemplating.

:dunno:
