Roster Thread (2023-2024 Season)

And Chad D hinted that he called on Jenner and Columbus said he they were not interested in moving him and Chad said that Adams was interested in Noah Cates and they couldn't get a deal done.

Even if he adds a veteran C like Jenner or say Sturm, that is not to the level of major roster surgery that Marek seemed to be hinting at.

If you look at the expiring contracts and who is locked in, the top forwards, D, and the #1 goalie spot are all locked up for next season.

I doubt you see them move Thompson, Cozens, Power, or any of the other top of the lineup guys that would likely need to move to get "major surgery" to take place.

:dunno:
I don't even think he put enough thought into it to really know what he meant exactly by "major surgery." The captain and assistant captain both leaving would be considered major by most, with maybe the coach too. That's probably all he meant? And it was clear he was just shooting from the hip, not being a planned part of the conversation.

I think it's time for them to "construct" the roster. Great, you've assembled a nice stable of prospects, and early career players.....what now???? There are too many redundant players and prospects, it's time to balance it out, which seems to be the Mitts trade.

1. Defense....to me, I can't complain of the top 3 being Dahlin, Power and Bo. That should be "contender" status defense. We can argue all day about the other three but guys like Clifton, Joker, Bryson should be in and out year after year because our top 3 should be driving this team, especially when Power and Bo put their manly muscles on.

2. Goaltending. UPL sure seems like he has done perfectly well in a traditional development path, he seems to have "arrived," and we have another top level talent developing in Levi. Professional #2 backup for a couple years until Levi is ready to compete.

3. Forwards......to me, Tuch, Thompson, Cozens, Girgs and Greenway all have a place on a contender. It certainly appears that Benson, Quinn and JJ all look like they have "it." Even Skinner has something. That's NINE players. No idea what to do with Krebs, he's such a tweener.

As I watch this team, it appears there is no "team structure." No real defined roles. If we had a staff that could implement an actual structure, and players playing in specific roles, we have the makings of a decent team.

Unfortunately, I do not see prospects coming that can fill the roles we need. There are just too many undersized players coming up and no "beef."

Personally, my favorite prospect is Kulich, who is still undersized but stocky. To me decide on one of Benson/Savoie, and trade the other. Same with Rosen, which was just a waste of a pick for Risto. I think we have talent on this team, but lack a true leader on the team. We also need vets that can actually play. I f Adams goes out and adds 2 decent vets, a leader and brings in some decent coaches, I think this team would be right in the mix.

Sorry, but I do not believe that anyone considers replacing two 30+ UFAs that spend most of their time on the 4th line "major surgery" unless you call getting a mole removed in an outpatient procedure "major surgery".

:sarcasm:

And I think Adams has made it clear that Granato will be back next season.

I'm just trying to interpret Merek's comments. I don't think, if pressed, he's say the team was trading anyone on a long term contract, for instance. Maybe, at most, he might be implying a Skinner buyout? But again, I don't think he's familiar enough with the full roster to even have anything specific in mind besides "changes." Folks are reading too much into it.

Based on how this is going, Adams is doing what he said he'd do:

- Tear down
- Re-construct
- Build prospect pool
- Re-construct with the assets to do so.

I think we're close to the last step.

We were on the last step after the 2022 draft, he just was a bit too patience.

But here's to hoping that this summer is finally it. I want the playoffs so bad.

Listening to Marek now:

He's asked a question about Stamkos to the Sabres and says he thinks the veteran mix will be very different.

He also thinks Don could be gone. Wysh had the point that "the teacher has to become the professor" and that hasn't happened. Could also be the hard-ass coach - Terrian or Julien or Ruff. I miss the days when Wysh was just a bad poster here.

Marek thinks they aren't far off (no duh). The goalie thing - I would rebut that they weren't getting this version of Luukkonen to start. It assumes they would have had the same level of play and that's questionable.

They also talk about playing meaningful games to end the season... but they also did that last year. *shrug*

It's just a couple of guys who watch maybe 15% of Buffalo's games this season shooting the shit.

I'd rather Adams be too patient than not patient enough. I can live with Adams not pulling the trigger soon enough, especially with the age of players in the organization.

If he were planning for an aging team, he would've missed the window.

How long does Granato still have on his contract?

His extension hasn't even starter. That's for another 2 years.

Stamkos to the Sabres? That’s out of left field unless I missed something

I'll leave this here without comment.

Like leaving a porkchop 🥩 for a pack of wolves.

Well that's a tweet.
Not as ludicrous as asking who was more benevolent between Mao, Stalin, and Pol Pot.
Mao because he could have killed more?
Stalin because he killed several tens of millions less than Mao?
Pol Pot because he only killed 1-2 million, but it was 1/4 of his country's population?

To me, it sounds like the whole coaching staff is back. FFS

"We're close to the end of our five year plan of not trying to reach the playoffs"

Kevyn Adams talking Zemgus Girgensons on WGR, and brings up a lot of good points.

I'm fine re-signing Girgensons. He deserves the respect of Sabres fans, and he's still good in his role.
Once you take him out of the lineup, you're looking for another version of him. We have enough holes to fill, I don't think we need another.

I'm planted on the hill to break free from that old regime of players. even though KO was the captain, a warrior, great guy, etc. I felt a breath of fresh air without him on the 4th line after the deadline.

I'd move on from Girgs. Even if it's true you're replacing him with another similar player. New faces. New attitude please. Let a kid play even.

You were with me up until your last sentence.

Nothing against Zem, but I’d rather a complete clearing of the tank teams. Even though being a part of those teams is not his fault at all
