Roster Thread (2023-2024 Season)

I wouldn’t limit the discourse to purely physical players. Rather I would include dominant players or those that are simply better than we have. I saw Robertson’s name kicked around in a few threads. Kaprizov as well. Vancouver is a wildcard I agree. The leverage the Sabres is a quantity of quality and the ability to eat cap if they choose, at least in the short term. I don’t think anyone thought of Byrum as a physical dman, but he is immensely, talented and experienced. I would trade potential for that experience.

What would you package for Robertson or Kaprizov?

I don't see it, how often do players like Peterka get traded? Teams get prime aged players for futures packages all the time. And why are we trading our most dynamic forward for someone at the same position? Hell why are we making these swooping personnel decisions at all when the thing holding this team back is horrible special teams coaching?
How often do prospects like Kulich, Savoie, Rosen, Neuchev, Benson, or Ostlund get traded? Guess what - more than one of them are getting traded.

Also, the reason 5’11” wingers like Peterka don’t get traded is because they ain’t worth much. Same can be said about all of the winger prospects I listed. You are really overvaluing small wingers just because Adams drafted them.

Colorado just dealt Bowen Byram.. If you asked me two weeks ago id rank Bowen head and shoulders higher then Savoie, Rosen, Ostlund and Benson both in quality of player and value.

The going rate for a cost controlled top 6 forward will be at least one of them if not one tied in with a 1st round pick

We need a natural center on that second line to feed snipers like Zach Benson and JJ Peterka.

Which one are you going to target, and what package would you offer?

I guess I agree with both - EJ and Clifton were an upgrade on the poo platter of Fitz, Clague, Bryson, and Pilut...yet neither played up to the level that I believe KA hoped to get from them. Clifton was what I expected (decent 3rd pair guy, NOT the "Power-partner" many hoped for), while EJ burned out fast around mid-season, which I didn't expect.

As for 4C options, I'm a little frustrated that a follow-up to the Mitts trade didn't happen. You'd think KA would send a 2nd/3rd to SJ for Sturm and wrap up that situation then and there. Like usual, I expect some bargain bin move that doesn't actually move the needle and leaving the C position weaker.
Cody Eakin getting a call?

Marek convinced the Sabres are going to look really different next year. Roster wise and behind the bench - unless they make a miracle run and make it. Then he thinks Granato has to be safe.

It's common sense right? 13 years no playoffs, 4 years under the same GM with little organizational progress? Team is often unprepared to play, coach struggles against teams who can simply slow them down through the neutral zone?

Common sense says: "Ok, time for some changes"

But...every indication is they won't.

I'd love for Marek to talk about whether he is hearing anything or it is just his assumption on what they need to do...

I highly doubt they make huge changes. Unless some bottom 6 forward tweaks and one or two new assistant coaches are what Marek is hinting at.

Like the past two off seasons, I expect all the mock off season changes that fans and media talk about with the Sabres will involve much larger and more numerous changes than we actually see.

Marek definitely has some sources in the organization, so I hope he's saying that from what he's hearing. Also Marek is very clearly a Sabres fan (as much as one can be as a media figure) so it could be him speaking out of what he hopes as well.

He's an admitted Sabre fan and sometimes puts his fandom out in the airwaves. I haven't yet listened to the pod from yesterday though, so maybe there is more to that. It's basically what he and Friedman said in their deadline recap 32 Thoughts too.

Here’s some questions I’d like answered:

Is Krebs still improving noticeably?
How certain are we that he’ll be better than a typical middle-of-the-road UFA center next season?
Is he even above replacement-level in any role we’ve seen him in so far?

I honestly don’t know the answers to these. To me, he does look great some nights, and makes a lot of bonehead plays other nights. His moneypuck stats and other metrics seem to look awful, even when he has what I consider good games. Which is fairly regularly lately. I like him!

Who is this guy, and how do we use him next season successfully? I need that question answered before we can even figure out what our needs are.

My interpretation was that he was just echoing what a lot of us say here. that a coaching change makes all the sense in the world at this stage. Definitely not framed as any kind of insider knowledge in my opinion.

Analytically he's a typical 4c. He's not a 3c presently. There's very little chance they get a UFA 4c better than him.

Most 4c have terrible analytics for multiple reasons.

In Adams presser he noted he called on some veteran centers but teams didn't want to move them yet as they were in the playoffs but he would revisit at the draft. He has a golden chance to beat any package out there for a center that may price himself off a playoff team.

Listen to the podcast link from yesterday. Him shredding the Sabres for starting Levi this season was the best part.

"I wonder how the Sabres would look If they didn't try to reinvent the goalie development wheel"

That was good, but the counterpoint was also true - goaltending was never really the issue this season so they’d be in the same place regardless of how that was done.

It was still stupid.

And Chad D hinted that he called on Jenner and Columbus said he they were not interested in moving him and Chad said that Adams was interested in Noah Cates and they couldn't get a deal done.

Even if he adds a veteran C like Jenner or say Sturm, that is not to the level of major roster surgery that Marek seemed to be hinting at.

If you look at the expiring contracts and who is locked in, the top forwards, D, and the #1 goalie spot are all locked up for next season.

I doubt you see them move Thompson, Cozens, Power, or any of the other top of the lineup guys that would likely need to move to get "major surgery" to take place.

:dunno:
