Stelund is the top TOI center on a top 10 PK unit. He wins faceoffs. He's a utility center. He's not going to produce much, but he's not Eakin either.

He's about the same as Cozens 4v5. With the downside of getting caved in 5v5.

As things stand right now, I have us:
  1. Re-signing Grigs
  2. Signing Duhaime
  3. Swapping Jokiharju's rights for someone like Sturm (this is the basis anyway, add draft picks to balance value). Perhaps this becomes Laughton or someone from @Chainshot's list
Maybe not popular, but it's what I think they'll more or less do.

One out of the box idea I've been toying with in my head is a major futures for presents type of roster shake-up, but admittedly, it's not one that people around here will like too much:
Power + Peterka
for
Weegar + Coleman

Again, this would be the starting basis, I would add picks and minor prospects to balance it out.

I've been toying with this because I really don't like the construction of our defense, and we are just way too young everywhere. Also, I really like JJ, but his long term spot in the lineup is tenuous at best with Savioe, Kulich, and Rosen all developing right now.

I fully get the Weegar contract concerns and Coleman age/drop-off concerns, but these are two guys that play the game the right way, and do it at a very high level right now. The Flames are in the midst of rebuild/retool, so getting a couple of high potential kids under long term team control should be appealing for them.

Why is everyone so eager to trade Peterka now?
Because neither Skinner nor Krebs have any value and/or aren't tradeable..

And the fact that he still needs development and we want to start winning.

And the fact that we have a half-dozen players in the prospect pipeline behind him that will likely be able to replace him for cheaper.

And the fact that we need his cap space for a more complete player, to build out a more well-rounded roster.

And the fact that he mainly only scores goals (for now), which will cause him to eat up more cap than he's worth on this roster.

I honestly don't think Granato will trust Krebs in that position. I have a hard time planning anything for next year's forward group until we figure out what Krebs is to the coach and GM.

I'm not sure his speed is replaceable .

I don't think trading away our 2 best performing forwards is a good way to "start winning" but in Mitts' case it made sense because we already have our top 6 centers locked up. That's not the case on the wing.

I think that would be quite the overpay from us. I know we are somewhat down on Power, but to the rest of the league he is a recent 1OA d man who was a Calder finalist and is locked up long term.

Just my impression from the main boards and occasional visits to opposing fans boards - I don't think Power is as highly regarded as your typical recent 1OA players.

But I did caveat that it wasn't going to be a popular idea

If you can't replace him with someone better, you just don't trade him. However, many feel we need to get better if the team is going to succeed, and both Skinner and Krebs have to stay on the team.

You might not believe this, but there are better and more experienced wingers out there. Is Adams going to land one? Probably not. so he'll probably stay, get a bridge deal, and get traded when he's up for his following contract.

Obviously if you can ditch Skinner, you keep JJP.

Also, he's 100% not our "second best performing forward." On most nights, he sinks the team and is one of the worst. Sounds like you're stat counting and not watching him

Crouse for Peterka
Borgen for Joki

Both would be good acquisitions, but I don't see any reason Seattle has any interest.

Borgen is fast, physical, defensively sound and is pacing for nearly 30 points without any pp time and is a solid penalty killer.

If Seattle makes him available he should return a better value package than Jokiharju.

Kevyn Adams: Hey, Terry. I have this idea and it will save you $7.5M in cash next year...
Which is hopefully/ostensibly the last season where revenue is in the dumps, from his POV. Without knowing how Terry thinks, there might be something there.

Wasn't it Terry who was forcing Botts to get that deal done Skinner?

If true, I'd have no problem going to Terry with that idea.
I think he only did that because he was trying to please his GM Eichel :sarcasm:

Seriously though, even if he was behind it, he's probably over that now. And the salary savings might be more important to him.

I certainly would not trade Borgen for Joki, so I have to agree. As I said in my post, these were just template ideas that were in the ballpark value-wise and were examples of what I'd be looking for.

Like the mock, but feel like its short 1 forward move.

For the life of me, I dk why the idea of trading Power suddenly got popular. Peterka for something more established? I'll listen. Power? Nooooooooooooooooooo chance.

Byram, Dahlin, Power aren't going anywhere.

His brain makes him one of the slowest players...unless someone springs him for a breakaway, which happens once every 5 games. And he probably left his man early to do so, which more often hurts the team.
I see this as a 100% coaching issue. This is why the last couple years of us developing players at the NHL level and not teaching how to play correctly in the AHL.

Honestly, I hesitated even throwing that idea out there because I don't want to get labeled as someone advocating for trading either one of them. I'm very high on both. But...

Watching UPL get run twice yesterday brings back a lot of the Miller/Lucic feelings from 15 years ago, so I'm trying to figure out some different ways to transform the roster without sacrificing too much skill. Because things aren't going to get easier in the playoffs (if we ever make the playoffs again).

Also, you guys need to stop with the Skinner buyout talk.

Check the way the Sabres treat him in social media
Check the way his teammates talk about him
Check the way the coach deploys him.

Skinner is NOT getting bought out, no matter how much you dislike his game. It's not even worth discussing.
