Roster Thread (2023-2024 Season)

The UFA center market in general is pretty darn weak this offseason. So, I could see Stephenson being a guy that gets one of those long, overpaid UFA contracts that the team regrets less than halfway through the deal.

With a 16 team No Trade list, I would be surprised if he were an option for the Sabres if Lou were willing to trade him.
I would be surprised too, but stranger things have happened. Never hurts to ask. I think a big factor will be whether they make it this year to the playoffs, and whether he sees the Sabres as an opportunity to win.

Lest we forget, UFA money gets silly. And Stephenson has seemed like he's forgotten how to play hockey this year. Even when playing with Stone, he's gotten his face kicked in. It's a gamble that grows with adding additional UFA money to it.

I mean, he's probably a 6-7M UFA right? Hayes-ish level. It's probably not even an option, he's from western canada, only real connection here would be Tuch/Krebs as former teammates, and even then who wants to go from a contender to whatever *this* is. And the Sabres probably wouldn't be willing to spend it regardless.

Funny, I have a list of centers running for a "Center of Attention" thread idea and he's fifth:

  1. Jack Drury – Carolina, 23, RFA for his 2nd contract coming of his ELC.
  2. Nic Dowd – Washington, 33, $1.3M AAV for just next season.
  3. Teddy Bleuger – Vancouver, 29, UFA.
  4. Anthony Cirelli – Tampa, 26, $6.25M AAV for 7 more seasons, no NT protection now, 1st year of extension.
  5. Noah Cates – Philadelphia, 25, $2.625M AAV for 1 more season, then RFA.
  6. Phillip Danault – Los Angeles, 31, $5.5M AAV for 3 more seasons, 10 team NT protection.
  7. Brock Nelson – NY Islanders, 32, $6M AAV for just next season, 16 team NT protection
  8. JP Pageau – NY Islanders, 31, $5M AAV for 2 more seasons, 16 team NT protection.
  9. Lars Eller – Pittsburgh, 34, $2.45M AAV for just next season.
  10. Noel Acciari – Pittsburgh, 32, $2M AAV for 2 more seasons, 8 team NT protection.
  11. Barclay Goodrow – NY Rangers, 31m $3.641M AAV for 3 more seasons, 15 team NT protection.
Jack Drury remains my favorite guy to try to pry out by whatever means necessary.

Also, Jenner is the Jackets version of Girgensons. The owners love the guy. It seems unlikely that he's moving in the summer after they didn't leverage the league-wide lust for him at this trade deadline.

I'm not real familiar with Drury... what's his story? And would Carolina move him?

Ted's kid and Chris's nephew.

He played for his dad at Harvard for two years, spent one season in the SHL for Vaxjo in 2020-21, and then spent most of 2012-22 in the AHL. He split last season between the AHL and the NHL and he's been on the Canes all of this season.

He played in the WJCs with Mattias Samuelsson.

As to whether the Canes will trade him, it likely is up to Adams to make an offer that the Canes can't refuse.

:dunno:

Ooof depressing. I've looked at most of these guys in-depth, and they each seem either unrealistic (e.g. Danault, Pageau) or scary/high risk (e.g. Eller, Cirelli).

I didn't even consider that Drury would be available, but could they possibly be in a Mitts-type of situation where they won't want to pay him what he thinks he's worth, so they'll trade him before they start negotiations? One can dream, I guess.

FWIW, Chad dropped some "insider knowledge" (if you believe he has any) that the Sabres zeroed in on both Jenner and Cates at the deadline, and may have laid the groundwork to go back to those conversations in the offseason. They also probably outbid Nashville for Novak but he chose to stay there (I've heard that one from several sources).

I honestly know almost nothing about Cates, so that's something for me to do today.

Aside from the connections, Drury on the Sabres would be a nice fit. I was disappointed when Botterill didn't take him, but it was for Samuelsson so can't be too disappointed.

I think part of what motivated the Mittelstadt trade was lack of willingness to put another $6-7m into the center position after locking down Cozens and Thompson for similar AAVs. If I’m right about that, I have a hard time imagining Buffalo would want to commit north of $6m to the 3C spot long term for Cirelli.

From the rest of your list, I think Danault or Pageau would be a great 3C fits available and willing to waive here. Accari would be a good 4C fit (but with the same caveats).

Cost certainty might also be a factor.

Part of what I was doing, is trying to scrape moneypuck line data and evolving defensive impacts versus centers and then come up with a list of guys. Noah is very good defensively and I would be pleased if that is someone they identified and can obtain… And has a similar game impact with Buffalo. If he doesn’t, that would suck.

Drury has crazy good impacts like most of Carolina, he passes my eye test whenever I watch him, and he’s only playing 12 minutes a night. He’s the guy that I would like the most. But as you say, there’s no reason for Carolina necessarily to move him. They could do a second contract bridge and maybe wait to pay the guy. He’s one of those that looks like the real deal in his draft year and has done nothing BUT prove it right along.

I think it was Adams frustration of not being able to land a top 4 Dman in free agency or previous trades

Nice list!

Sturm was in some rumors during the TDL and is a guy I plan to watch some film on this summer as well. His charts look like shit but that could just be that his team sucks and he's playing a line higher than he should.

Yeah, not nearly a complete list but I had something cooking for a bit after the winger one from a few weeks back.

I don't have a lot of faith still, but I will say, I got out of the arctic circle for a bit to go somewhere warm with unlimited booze this week and it has allowed me some introspection into my own feelings on the team. The season is lost and there is nothing we can do about it. I am done being mad till we see what the off season brings. Maybe that is nothing, and history says it likely will be, but I will try to reserve my feelings unless that nothing comes to pass.

I feel better about the Mitts/Byram trade. I am not convinced it was right but I get it. I am just going to pretend we package some picks and prospects for Crowse this summer and try to enjoy the remainder of the season.

Crouse would be great joker+Rosen possibly gives them a rhd who's young and playing like a top 4 and a decent winger prospect probably have to give them two 2nd's

Listening to the Maintenance Day podcast and Lance kept bringing up Scott Laughton as a target. Made it seem like Adams talked with Philly leading up to deadline but they (Flyers) were in playoff race and didn’t want to do it now. But something that might get revisited in summer.

Something else he mentioned that I didn’t know was that Skinner is playing through an injury. I don’t know if it’s the injury that had him out of the lineup before or a new one.

I think a lot of people are going to lose their minds and probably point to Terry as too involved in the move.

But, he still plays the type of game they need on the 4th line. So, I get it if they re-sign him.
Those same people don't appreciate the nuances of the game and how difficult playing that effective suppression role. His versatility being able to slot up and down the lineup as a W or C has value

Too many think it’s a video game or fantasy hockey roster. You need guys like Girgs on the team to fill a role. Let them get mad.

One of the funnier aspects of this season is watching some posters cling to various narratives about depth guys. When the top guys were the issue all season.
