So we need a top 9 forward after trading a top 6 forward entering his prime.

Got it.

Not sure what Kevyn's plan is to fill these holes, but hopefully he begins to see what a lineup with guys like Girgensons, Greenway, and Robinson moving up in TOI while demoting the JJ's and the Skinners of the world is having on our ability to compete successfully.

Even if I wasn't pi--ed about these comments, I'd still be curious why he said "top 9 FW or 4th line C" when it should be a top 9 C and a 4th line FW.
Frankly, we need 2 bottom line centers. MAYBE Krebs can become one of them. We'll see how he does the rest of the season.

We certainly currently need two 4th line forwards.

I'm OK with the top 6 as it currently kind of is.....as long as Peterka gets his head out of his ass, Skinner gets healthy and chaotic again, Tage shoves the horseshoe back up his ass and Cozens and Tuch stay how they're playing now.

I get that they probably have more flexibility to get a top 6 or top 9 forward with the picks and prospects they have than they can for a top 4 defenseman.

I'm just resigned to Krebs being the 3C now, for better or worse. But yeah, they should have two more.

Good point and while I was sad to see Mitts go, I've definitely warmed up to Bo and can appreciate how he rounds out our top 4.

All that remains is for the GM to actually go out into the open market and get that forward, or two. Can he pull it off? He's certainly got the assets needed to fill out the roster and make the Sabres a playoff team next year. This is a make it or break it off season for Adams.

This summer needs to be a quantity for a player trade. At some point we will need to trade a few of these midgets for size. I can’t see how we can take a step forward with so many average (Krebs, Peterka, skinner) to really below average (Benson, Savoie) players. Girgs is a fine player but he’s no banger. We need more of “Cozens” size.

We can not ever compete with a team consisting of Rosen, Savoie and Benson….never. It’s not just height, they look super small out there. I can’t think of a team that’s been a contender even having two under sized forwards.

Rosen, first and joker should get us something good….

Question: would better rebound control/less rebounds from the goalie improve xga since it would mean less shots close to the net?
Yes. In a vacuum if nothing else changed but the goalie's rebound contro,l it would lead to lower xga for the skaters due to fewer and lower quality of shots being faced.

Better defense from the skaters also leads to easier shots faced by the goalie, which makes rebound control easier leading to fewer rebounds which leads to lower xga since you're facing fewer shots and fewer shots close to the net.

A lot of the team saw significant improvement in their 5v5 On Ice xGA/60 from Oct-Dec to Jan-Now

Clifton was not one of those players. I don't get where this narrative that he's completely turned it around in the 2nd half of the year compared to the first half has come from. Clifton went from being 3rd worst on the team in 5v5 xGA/60 Oct-Dec to being 3rd worst Jan-Now. He's actually gotten worse relative to the overall team xGA/60.

I have this table sorted by most improved to least improved between the 2 date ranges.

After looking at these stats... maybe Donnie's defensive system has actually started to work?
This is great news! According this chart, Krebs is nearly an identical player to Mitts, so losing Casey should not hurt the team at all since they already have a replacement!! :sarcasm:

This is the assets I am offering too, Krebs potentially if it is a C coming back would make more sense.

Clifton also was playing his off side for a good portion of the season
Maybe that's why it wasn't the best signing...

Roster building is an art. And signing a guy and then misusing him means that it wasn't the most well thought out signing.

It is like the issue with playing Krebs on the 4th line.

I just hope we don't see some F moves this offseason that are straight out of the Island of Misfit Toys.

I've wondered if they were trying to move Jokiharju over last summer and didn't find a fit. With how he's bounced back, I suspect he'll have more interest this summer.

But Adams needs to start identifying more than just one-way lines to build his roster.

Listening to the xB podcast today, Flyers C/W Noah Cates is a guy that Chad heard Adams called on, along with "a center who is easy to figure out from Columbus who was not available and would be costly to acquire if he were."

I won't be shocked if Jenner is the high end and Cates is the more reasonable get for Adams this summer...

Funny, I have a list of centers running for a "Center of Attention" thread idea and he's fifth:

  1. Jack Drury – Carolina, 23, RFA for his 2nd contract coming of his ELC.
  2. Nic Dowd – Washington, 33, $1.3M AAV for just next season.
  3. Teddy Bleuger – Vancouver, 29, UFA.
  4. Anthony Cirelli – Tampa, 26, $6.25M AAV for 7 more seasons, no NT protection now, 1st year of extension.
  5. Noah Cates – Philadelphia, 25, $2.625M AAV for 1 more season, then RFA.
  6. Phillip Danault – Los Angeles, 31, $5.5M AAV for 3 more seasons, 10 team NT protection.
  7. Brock Nelson – NY Islanders, 32, $6M AAV for just next season, 16 team NT protection
  8. JP Pageau – NY Islanders, 31, $5M AAV for 2 more seasons, 16 team NT protection.
  9. Lars Eller – Pittsburgh, 34, $2.45M AAV for just next season.
  10. Noel Acciari – Pittsburgh, 32, $2M AAV for 2 more seasons, 8 team NT protection.
  11. Barclay Goodrow – NY Rangers, 31m $3.641M AAV for 3 more seasons, 15 team NT protection.
Jack Drury remains my favorite guy to try to pry out by whatever means necessary.

Also, Jenner is the Jackets version of Girgensons. The owners love the guy. It seems unlikely that he's moving in the summer after they didn't leverage the league-wide lust for him at this trade deadline.

Cirelli is a guy for me that I can't shake that feeling that it would be a bad move, but I really want to see it happen even with the downside risk that would come with trading for him.

He's not my favorite but I did move him up the list I was making just based on his playoff experience. They need more of that. I would probably push Pageau down - this is just something I have in a word doc that I poke at every now and then, cross referenced with Moneypuck's line tool and the twins stuff and Capfriendly:

I just like Cirelli as a really good bottom 6 center with loads of winning in the NHL. His dip over the past couple of seasons is concerning. But, he is still relatively young and is locked in for a while which fits with the core they already have.

Jenner is an interesting idea. I just don't know how much of the future he's worth given his age and contract situation.

I don't mind the drop in production if he's able to stuff his line's checking assignment into lockdown like he does.

Jenner isn't going to be moved. I can't even lean on the Roslovic joke either now.

The Clifton story this season was a weird one.

Starts camp on the right side with Dahlin. So dialed in there he didn’t want to play in preseason game unless with his practice partner. Then never plays there during the regular season. Instead starts on the left side with E.Johnson. Struggles the entire time. Then gets switched back to right and plays better.

Grab Bleuger for the Latvian line. Same draft year as Girgs if memory serves correctly.

I'm curious how much Eichel has gotten into Chandler Stephenson's ear with regards to Buffalo. Vegas likely won't be able to sign him with the Hertl acquisition. Probably a long shot as with any mid level UFA, but a thought at least.

Lest we forget, UFA money gets silly. And Stephenson has seemed like he's forgotten how to play hockey this year. Even when playing with Stone, he's gotten his face kicked in. It's a gamble that grows with adding additional UFA money to it.

I think I will be in the minority, but I would love Brock Nelson in this lineup. And his production could go up with the quality of wingers we have. I don’t see signs of him falling off the cliff.

The UFA center market in general is pretty darn weak this offseason. So, I could see Stephenson being a guy that gets one of those long, overpaid UFA contracts that the team regrets less than halfway through the deal.

With a 16 team No Trade list, I would be surprised if he were an option for the Sabres if Lou were willing to trade him.
