1.) Necas is a winger. We have a plethora of high-skill wingers. Why would we want Necas?
2.) If Carolina is balking at paying Necas......would they pay Mittlestadt? Both seem like they're on track for similar deals -- in the 7x7 range.

But Necas doesn't need a change of scenery. What's the logic from Carolina's side?

I'm assuming Carolina's logic would be to get a productive 2nd line center.

As for Buffalo's reasoning...

CBJ and BUF don't make good trading partners. What they have to offer isn't what we need......unless they're willing to talk about Peeke.....but that's a helluva projection to assume he'd be able to absorb top 4 minutes. Blankenburg is more defensive....but he's Cliffy-sized. There really isn't a trading fit here.
Voronkov is someone we need, but I don't know why the Jackets would ever trade him. So your point holds.

Agreed. Mitts is the easiest piece to move if we want to affect negative change for the forward group. Unless we're trading him as part of a larger deal for a better center in the same age range then it will be a step back for the organization and not in the one-step-backwards-two-steps-forward kind of way. So no to trading him for a top 4 RD. And no to trading him for a mediocre 3C and spare change. He's been the best and most consistent forward this year playing a position that's not an organizational strength. Why, after seven years, an organization would want to trade a player that has become one of their few developmental success stories is beyond me.

While talent certainly plays a factor, it's not the only factor to consider when moving a player.

I am assured that if we trade Mittelstadt, we are likely to get a less talented player in return. Sure, a scenario could happen this summer where Mittelstadt is part of a package for a superior player, and that is a great outcome as well. But the reality is, if we choose to trade Mittelstadt, we likely won't get a more talented player in return.

The issue is, the problem with this team isn't talent, it's construction. It's about putting together a team that can win games. We have a very talented forward group, we showed that last year. The team can score a lot of goals. But we aren't winning enough games.

As a team, we are handicapped because we aren't going to attract top UFA talent. If a player has a NTC/NMC, it's likely we are on that list. So, we need to alter the construction of our team and can't do so via obtaining high end players or signing via UFA, the options are limited.

I am not saying we can't win with Mittelstadt, but I will say we won't go much beyond a .500 team with our forward group as built. In a weird one off year like last year where the stars align and several guys have career years and we barely see any injuries, yes, we could be a playoff contender. But, this year has shown that our team is very stoppable. We're likely going to have to lose several trades to move forward as a franchise.

I'm not saying we SHOULD move Mittelstadt, I simply see him as the most obvious/easiest piece to move given his contract status. If the pieces are available to fill the roster holes we have, it's fine to lose a trade to get a good fit.

My concern is that the front office may not be able to identify the needs that the team has.

I like the idea, as he is a player type that we desperately need. I dislike it because I would have to cheer for a Tkachuk, something to which I have a long standing objection. The thought makes me ill. Brady seems to be the best of the three, but still...

I'd drive to Ottawa with a fresh bucket of wings of his liking in a limo filled with whatever he desires. Gladly will hop on the Tkachuk wagon!

He was a nice if not a bit cocky kid when I met him. He was saying Quinn Hughes should be the first overall pick in that draft over Dahlin. Of course Quinn was sitting next to him.

1.) What else are we adding?
2.) Why would we trade the ONLY natural NHL center we have in our pipeline?
3.) I completely disagree that Jiricek and Power would make a good pairing. Granted that Jiricek has a FAR better shot and is more physical -- but both can get equally lost in their own zone and each have the same primary ability: puck transition. Power can do it by passing OR skating while Jiricek isn't nearly as good as a skater. IMO, we need a more defensively capable guy to pair with Power.

I'd be surprised if Mitts got 7 mill.

Buccigross openly wondering if Carolina is targeting Casey Mittelstadt. He's not known to be a rumor monger. I take that to mean Caseynis squarely "on the block" which is just a damn shame.
Makes sense. Mitts seems like a Brindamore player

A month ago I think 7M was a hopeful bargain, but 2 points in the month of February for Mitts has definitely changed that landscape.

Hmm.. im not very good at gauging these sort of things but a month ago I was reading tweets from all those websites that project contracts and they had Mitts anywhere from 5 to 5.5 to 6 mill per year.

What would the forum think if we flipped Noah Ostlund for David Jiricek..

Jiricek would be a nice fit with Owen Power on our second defense.

Sammy - Dahlin
Jiricek - Power
Jokiharju - Clifton
Bryson - R. Johnson
I'd prefer not trading Ostlund. Post draft things could change.
Asset worth:

Girgensons
Girgensons (50% retained)
Okposo
Okposo (50% retained)
Olofsson
Olofsson (50% retained)
E. Johnson
E. Johnson (50% retained)
Jost
Robinson
Comrie

Guesses?

I think EJ st 50% can return the most.
Girls and KOcan return a little less. Those returns could be conditional on time played/ playoff advance.
I'd be surprised if Mitts got 7 mill.

It depends on contract length. He's worth above $6M per year given he doesny get 1st line minutes and top PP.

.any of them as said Mitts sucked or had an outlier season

Voronkov is the sort of player they are going to have to draft and develop, sadly. That entire Russian line is productive and fun. If he was Canadian, we'd never hear the end of it from SN/TSN, since he's a power center and can even fight. But being in Columbus... nah, that's not going to be put forward by anyone stateside.

He's arbitration eligible and at the end of January he was pacing for 20 goals, 50 assists and 70 points this season and had 80 points in his last 82 games.

Had he kept his pace and finished with 70 points, 5-6M would have been a nice hometown discount based off of league comps.

He seems to get way more points when Tage or Cozens are inured, and he has an elevated role. I don't think that goes unnoticed, and is part of what you're considering when trading for him, or signing him to a contract.

I find him difficult to pin an AAV on.

The Maple Leafs have had a lot more success than we have with three forwards making over $10 million each.
Toronto is not how you try and create as cip contender by putting so much in 4F which forces you to cut elsewhere.

Therr are two approaches

4/7 of cap on 14F, 3/7 for D/G
Or bottom 8 4F, 2D, 1G and 1 other spot get $11M and thr test is 60/40 between 9F and top 5D/SG

Toronto paying AM, JT, nylander, Marner $40M with an$84M cap leaves thrm $8M for the bottom 9-10F with 4/7 or $48M for F.

You can brack thesr guidelines with short term contracts due to low ELC/ bridge but not long term.

A future 91M cap amounts to $52M on F and $39M for D/G
Or
Bottomed 8 $11M so 9F for $80x0.6=$48M and $32M or 5D/SG

11,8,4,4,1 and 4 for SG=32M
9F= 7,7,7,9,3.5,3.5,6.5, 2.5, 2 for 48M

Friedman politely said the Pettersson scoop was bunk at the time and it looks like he was right. Yet everyone will still dismiss every single thing he says out of hand if you post it on here because he’s apparently always wrong.

I don't think anyone (reasonable) would dispute he's the most connected guy in the league. I think it's also true that he doesn't seem to have anybody inside the Sabres organization feeding him info, so his Sabres stuff may not be as reliable.
