Agreed. Mitts is the easiest piece to move if we want to affect negative change for the forward group. Unless we're trading him as part of a larger deal for a better center in the same age range then it will be a step back for the organization and not in the one-step-backwards-two-steps-forward kind of way. So no to trading him for a top 4 RD. And no to trading him for a mediocre 3C and spare change. He's been the best and most consistent forward this year playing a position that's not an organizational strength. Why, after seven years, an organization would want to trade a player that has become one of their few developmental success stories is beyond me.
While talent certainly plays a factor, it's not the only factor to consider when moving a player.
I am assured that if we trade Mittelstadt, we are likely to get a less talented player in return. Sure, a scenario could happen this summer where Mittelstadt is part of a package for a superior player, and that is a great outcome as well. But the reality is, if we choose to trade Mittelstadt, we likely won't get a more talented player in return.
The issue is, the problem with this team isn't talent, it's construction. It's about putting together a team that can win games. We have a very talented forward group, we showed that last year. The team can score a lot of goals. But we aren't winning enough games.
As a team, we are handicapped because we aren't going to attract top UFA talent. If a player has a NTC/NMC, it's likely we are on that list. So, we need to alter the construction of our team and can't do so via obtaining high end players or signing via UFA, the options are limited.
I am not saying we can't win with Mittelstadt, but I will say we won't go much beyond a .500 team with our forward group as built. In a weird one off year like last year where the stars align and several guys have career years and we barely see any injuries, yes, we could be a playoff contender. But, this year has shown that our team is very stoppable. We're likely going to have to lose several trades to move forward as a franchise.
I'm not saying we SHOULD move Mittelstadt, I simply see him as the most obvious/easiest piece to move given his contract status. If the pieces are available to fill the roster holes we have, it's fine to lose a trade to get a good fit.
My concern is that the front office may not be able to identify the needs that the team has.
