Frankly I think we need a new owner and GM to turn things around and I happen to know two guys who would be perfect:

Hypothetical.

A forward who consistently scores 30+ goals is on the trade block. His GM argues "he'll score 30 goals for you every season". Their GM counters with "ya, but he only scores 30 because your team is crap and he gets opportunities that he won't here".

Whose argument do you buy?

FIFY.

Skinner wouldn't be putting up 30 wo pp time and certainly not on a 3rd line. We saw him down lineup. He was invisible. And he doesn't make anyone he plays with better. He is a self centered player.
Who scores 30 goals in this league and doesn't get PP time?

For the record, Skinner had 27 ES goals last season.

If you play goal scorers on a third line with 3rd line grinders, they almost all tend to stop scoring goals. That is mostly a universal truth for probably 90 percent of goal scoring wingers.

You're probably more familiar with the inner workings of X. ;-)

Does 1 post qualify as "Trending"?

No no, there is a lot of the usual Sabre Twitter people talking about Mittelstadt and some non-Sabre people (a Philly guy who actually has a by-line among them). I was poking fun since there are multiple Mittelstadt things happening.

Also, I'd probably give Mitts 7x42 (maybe even bump it up to 6.5). Why the f*** not. We're not in cap trouble and he'll probably put up good numbers and the cap is always going up. I'm sick of the Sabres trading players and them having success elsewhere. I really do think he's part of the core. They do need grit elsewhere on the roster though do I wouldn't be opposed to trading other players to bring that in.

Maybe they need to trade one of Benson, Savoie or Kulich.

Ya, I saw the Philly guy. Canucks, Jets chatter as well, but just fans afaik.

I want Casey extended, but if Adams is adamant about trading him, I'll at least credit him for recognizing a sell-high moment. If there is fire behind the smoke, I'm thinking it's Hanifin. Just think - we'd have Power and Power Sr.

Maybe Adams wants to finish the D assembling, thinking he's got Savoie, Kulich, Ostlund, Rosen waiting in the wings at forward. Dahlin, Power, Hanifin, Samuelsson, R. Johnson, Clifton, Jokiharju would be a young, fairly strong, deep group, still with plenty of upside.

No appetite for trading Benson away. His production has sucked because he is an undersized rookie, but he has more dog in him than the rest of the team combined. One he ages a little he has potential to be a really special player. I am fine with trading the other two.

Yes, barring a buyout we're stuck with Mitts and his NMC. So let's hope he's given ample opportunity to do what he does best - score goals - while accepting that he'll never be the well-rounded, 200' player who busts his ass every shift that we'd all prefer.

You are saying this in the context of trading Mittlestadt, who actually has more dog in him than anyone else on this team.

Benson and Mittlestadt are similar players. They are skilled playmakers with high motors and high compete that are held back by their size and skating. The hope is that Benson becomes Mittlestadt. It took a long time for Casey to develop and now we are going to ship him off because we have a couple of guys who might develop into Casey. Great idea.

Would any of those guys be happy being a #7? Probably not but that’s an easy fix.

It’s cool to have such young talented players but we really do need veteran talented players. I think this where FA can be helpful because you don’t necessarily have to deal away those kids.

Why wouldn’t he get those opportunities? He’ll be on a scoring line and the PP anywhere he goes. It might not be PP#1 but he‘ll be on it when 8 of the 12 forwards you dress play there. Why would a team even trade for him if they weren’t planning on using him that way?

Plus a portion of his deal likely gets retained. So it wouldn’t be a 9mil cap hit. This is or course in the very unlikely event Skinner gets traded.

The discussion around Skinner is weird to me. He’s one of the best 5v5 goal scorers in the NHL. He doesn’t have a great 200’ game. Something that’s been the case with many very good goal scores over the years in this league. Good teams have figured out how to utilize these guys over the years. Yet it’s treated on here as some sort of impossible riddle to figure out when it comes to Skinner.

I don’t see them as similar players, nor are they on similar development trajectories. They don’t even play the same position.

But the main point is still true, that Benson isn’t guaranteed to become as good as Casey is now. And Casey plays a more valuable role to boot.

At no point in my life have I had less trust in the Buffalo Sabres general manager than right now. This guy trading the only guy on this roster that shows up, plays hard, and produces night after night would be the final straw.

I don’t believe this for a second. It makes absolutely no sense.

Could they be shopping Mitts? Maybe but I’d be surprised.

But for a goalie? No way. The finally have a youngster emerge and another one with a ton of potential. If they even thought about a goalie, at best it would be a stop gap for the rest of this season to keep Levi in Rochester. But who would they even get and why would they do this? They could just promote Comrie.

But you certainly don’t trade Mitts for a backup goalie. Peters is talking out of his ass.

for the record, since 2010-2011, there’s been 53 instances of 30 even strength goal scorers, and you could probably name them all with 2-3 giving you a hard time to remember. I don’t believe any of them weren’t top 6 guys for their team.

Skinner did it twice. Once on Buffalo, Once on Carolina. May need to check who his linemates were back on Carolina.

I am not saying this in the context of trading mittlestadt. I don't want him gone either. I was just objecting to Benson regarding the potential trading if Benson, kulich, or savoie.

As a business owner, you can’t continue to loose money over and over, it’s unsustainable. Sports franchises are rich men’s toys, and not traditional businesses.

Personally, I think Pegula meddled with player decisions (signings/trades) regularly. And since Covid this team has had a vastly different operating way, whether office staff, or players. We went from a cap team, to cap floor team, to no where close to cap.

Point is, he’s a multi billionaire, the Sabres are his toy, and if he really cared about winning, this team would be making moves regardless of money…..we’ve only seen “cost savings” since Covid.

I point to Dan Snyder, Jerry Jones, The Vegas owner, etc. you want to win, you don’t sit on your hands for years. Adams is a Pegula puppet.

It’s about actual cash money.
