It’s an extra year of $2 million that I’d rather avoid. The guy still nets 30+ so he’s far from useless.
That 2 mil is inconsequential. Skinner will get you 30g and 60p, most seasons, but he really does nothing beyond that. Honestly, he's probably a detriment in most other aspects of the game. Especially for $9mil/season 1st liner.

Peterka is putting up the same amount of production with less ice time. I suspect he'd produce even more getting 1st line ice time. Quinn would probably be just as good in that spot. They both play more well rounded games. It could even free up a spot for a better all-around player. One gotten through FA or by trade. Imagine Koncecny in Skinners spot on the top line.

The point is, the two best reassons to keep Skinner, the financial cost and his offensive output, can be easily overcome. Skinner is very one dimensional player. You just need more from your top line highest paid players than what you get from him .

I think it's really just the youngest team in the league basically playing inconsistent as one might expect. We desperately need to be in on the next decent player that comes available ie timo Meir, chychrun, eichel, etc.. I know lindholm would be there but contract doesn't look like it would end up being close to reasonable.

Keep:

Thompson, Skinner, tuch, Benson, mittlestadt, cozens, Quinn, Peterka, maybe Krebs.

Dahlin, power, Ryan johnson

Trade for d or forward upgrades to improve wherever possible using picks/prospects as chips. Not saying empty the cupboard but maybe we can take advantage of some decent WJC performances and get someone here hopefully with 2/3 years of term and do it before the season is over.

If we could upgrade even one in the top 4 or top 9 between 23-28 yo we just need to do it and accept its going to cost.

Having a former all star on first line isn't the worst thing in the world

People would probably feel better about Skinner and Cozens if we didn't have a coach who insisted on one or the other on PP1

Good question from
@LLysowski
on the 26/23 pair how Don balances eyes vs the numbers.

Don’s response on the analytics:

“Analytics are tough b/c there are so many analytics. There are so many variables that you can question some of the integrity in some of the analytics”

Too many numbers so forget it.

From 1st line center to waivers overnight.

In all sincerity why did KA sign him to a 2 million dollar deal? That seems anti efficiency and spending unnecessary money out of Pegulas pockets.
The only logical explanation is that there was a function "=roundup(4th_liner_salaries,0)" employed in his spreadsheet. What should have been 1.1 turned into a 2, and they didn't have the support staff to figure out how to fix it.

Most likely a panic move.

He did wait until free agency opened. Was probably told by agents of all of the players he targeted that none of them would be signing in Buffalo, and worried he was going to get stuck without a chair, so he offered Jost his QO.
