This IIHF U18 tournament is for the hard core prospect watchers and pro scouts. It's not a priority for hockey fans because Hockey Canada/CHL do not see it as a priority tournament.

I'd probably leave a roster spot open for Byfield. i doubt Sudbury survives for long v the '67s. depending on the first few games of that series go, I would probably leave 2 spots open Byfield/Murray.
I don't think they save two roster spots for Sudbury players, especially a 16 year old. Byfield is still in play, but I wouldn't think its a lock. One, it depends on Ice Dogs and Oshawa advancing in a timely manner to get the next series (and to create the Ottawa/Wolves match-up), and I can also see Lukonen stealing a game or two.

I would think the saved spots will be primarily focused on Dach, Cozens, Lafreniere, and Byram. Now, some of those guys could advance to round 3 (as it's unlikely all 4 get knocked out), but, I would think those who the primary saved spots are for. But, if some of those guys advance it may open some up for the next tier of guys. Dach and Lafreniere are through, but Dach is likely out next round. Byram is on a one seed in a side 2-2 series, and Cozens team is a 4 seed and is up 2-1. I really can't see a spot being kept open for Murray. If they go out in 4, he might get in, but I don't think Hockey Canada is a fan (they cut him from Hlinka) and he didn't have a great season.

Newhook now heading into the third round of the BCHL playoffs with the Victoria Grizzlies. Earliest he would be available - assuming Victoria is swept by Prince George - would be April 3. One assumes that if the series goes beyond 5 games (Game 6 is scheduled for April 6), Hockey Canada would have made up their minds about their roster.

Prince George is on fire in these playoffs, and they are a defensive-minded team (defense wins playoffs!) but Victoria won both games in the regular season between the two clubs. Seems highly unlikely that Newhook is there.

Another poster mentioned Conor Zary. Two things to note: 1) Kamloops' first-round series with Victoria Royals is tied at 2 games each, so it's iffy whether or not he would be available; and 2) he was hurt and unable to play in the first two games of the series, so even if he was available, he would be doubtful.

Dach sweeps the Warriors. Unlikely to get him. Legare or Pelletier guaranteed. Maybe Parent and Barron, Halifax down 1-2 to Quebec.

Poulin is probably a no, he's up 3-1. Edmonton is 2-2 with MH, Robertson is a possibility, Byram is up 2-1 on Seattle.

Even if Halifax lose in the first round I can't see them sending their guys overseas when they still have the Mem cup to play

Dylan Holloways Okotoks Oilers team is also down 3-1 to Brooks in their series.

Here is what I'm thinking at this current moment (assuming Holloway is also available). Also not going to speculate on any of the players added late from second round defeats as the options are too vast (McMichael, Dach, Tomasino, Byram, etc).

Forwards:
Dylan Cozens - LOCK
Ryan Suzuki - LOCK
Alex Newhook - LOCK
Dylan Holloway - LOCK
Peyton Krebs - LOCK
Nathan Legare - LOCK

2001's
Jamieson Rees
Connor Zary
Brayden Tracey
Hayden Fowler
Ethan Keppen
Reece Newkirk
Sasha Mutala

2002's
Jean Luc Foudy
Hendrix Lapierre
Mavrik Bourque
Will Cuylle
Connor McClennon
Jacob Perreault
Stephen Halliday

Would imagine that the forward group's camp roster is made up of 50% 2001's and 50% 2002's from the above list (so approximately 3 or 4 from each list).

Defense
Thomas Harley - LOCK
Kaeden Korczak - LOCK
Braden Schneider - LOCK
Jamie Drysdale (2002) - LOCK

2001's
Mike Vukojevic
Billy Constantinou
Jake Lee
Maxence Guenette

2002's
Lukas Cormier
Jeremie Poirier

Again, I would expect that one of Cormier or Poirier makes it on top of Drysdale and then two of the other 2001's make the camp roster.

Goalie
Taylor Gauthier - LOCK (likely starter)

Back-up
Dylan Garand (2002)
Mack Guzda
Jonathan Lemieux
Roman Basran
Luke Cavallin

I actually think Garand is the most likely choice as the back-up even though he is a 2002, with Guzda being the second most likely choice.

Summary
This is actually going to be a very competitive team. IMO, one of the stronger ones that we have iced in recent years. Definitely will be good to see.

Theo Rochette captained Switzerland at the Hlinka last year and did well playing for Canada at the U17 in the fall. I wonder what his options will be for the U18.

On D, if it is one of the two, it will be Cormier. Not as flashy as Poirier but he impressed in the Q this year.

When will the roster for the first round be announced?

Rochette isn't on the roster for the Swiss U18 preperation camp (despite being better than any forward on that roster) and would have been on the swiss WJC team last December if he had had any intention to play for Switzerland. It looks like he chose the Maple Leaf.

He doesn't really have any options other than play for the Swiss at this year's U18.
He hasn't yet spent enough time playing in Canada in order to have Canada as an option.

And once he plays an IIHF sanctioned tournament he won't have any options left, he'll be locked in to that choice.

So, if he interested in representing Canada internationally, he'll have to wait until next year to be eligible. and since he's unlikely to make the U20 team next year, he'll have to wait 2 years to play internationally. (if his choice is Canada)

You say he'd have to wait two years. Do you mean he will still not have played long enough in Canada to play for them in the 2020 U18?

I'm not sure if this is entirely correct. Rochette played some of his younger years in Canada. He recently gave an interview saying he will be moving into an apartment with his mother in Montreal to train and focus on school for the summer, so he won't be going to the U-18s. Presumably, since he publicly declared he wants to play for Canada, he was indicating that he won't be playing for Canada at the U-18s.

Nathan Legare (as expected) and Mavrik Bourque have received invites.

2002 born Lukas Cormier?

Don't particularly want underage players unless they are projected TOP 10 picks. A Quintin Byfield type. or on D a Jamie Drysdale type.

Just curious as to where Cormier is ranked...2nd. rounder?

As long as the kids can play their birth date is irrelevant. Smith, Woo and McIsaac were fantastic at this event a few years ago as underagers.

and the 3 of them combined for 1 goal and 5 points and Canada got blasted out of the quarters.

not my definition of did just fine. either on an individual player level or team level. I hold Hockey Canada to a higher standard.

Wow, you hold HC to a high standard. How's that relevant to anything?

There's not many 2020 lists made at this point except for some nerd lists which are made by people who are not paying attention.

Theres more to the game than statistics, particularly on the defensive side of the puck. I suspect you didn't watch the actual games.
