Shots against is not really that telling a stat, it's the quality of the chances.

Since winning the cup we have lost Mitchell, Regehr and Voynov and replaced them with Ehrhoff, Forbort and McNabb. That is a massive drop off. Thankfully we have the talent up front to make up for the defensive shortcomings.

That's absolutely a huge drop in talent there. Thing is, the Kings just don't allow a whole lot of chances. First in shots against and 4th in goals allowed means most of those chances are not that good.

Our current D system doesn't really need talent, it just needs guys that understand how to play it. On the defensive side, I doubt there is much of a dropoff at all. Now points from the blue-line, that's another story and something I'm more worried about.

I may be blinded by wishful thinking but I think Erhoff's offense can offset some of his defensive deficiencies. Hoping he has a Vancouverish year.

KINGS
C Jordan Weal – An undersized but very productive forward, who had 139 points in 149 AHL games over the past two seasons, and he’s made the club, at least while Dwight King is injured, but who knows when he’ll get his opportunity to shine.
D Derek Forbort – The only player from the first round of 2010 Draft that has yet to play an NHL game, Forbort is a 6-foot-4 defender who could earn a role as a defensive defenceman, but is currently outside the Kings’ top six. - TSN

didn't know that about forbort being the only 1st rd 2010 draft pick to not yet play an NHL game.

it'd be great to see these 2 make the lineup next game... or soon anyhow.

sounds like both lucic/brown will be ok to play for next game

That might be true, but DS will be reigning in that offensive aspect of his game in efforts to further hone his defense. IMO

FWIW Ehrhoff played a shutdown role in Pitt last year and apparently most of their fans liked that but noted that his offense was wasted in that case. So the capability is there, I think he's just still figuring out the system and where to be, he appeared to be looking around a lot last night instead of working on instinct, like Sekera. It takes time, especially on D.

the communication is not there yet that is for dang sure. Not with Schultz anyway

Schultz sucks, Erhoff will be fine. He was talking to Carter a lot when they were on ice together and we're both telling each other where to go and what to do. I loved seeing that. Erhoff might fit in perfectly as a leader in the locker room.

Yeah, want to see Ehrhoff with someone who doesn't have the hands of a statue and the brain and feet to match.

I still think this team needs another veteran defenseman that can play.

BREAKING NEWS: Lewis to second pairing.

Just as long as he's not in the top 6!!!

Seriously though... can Lewis be moved to D? It might fit his skill set better. Plus it would give Lewis an excuse for missing the net when he's shooting from the point.

But he will be in the top six....defensemen!

Strange to have McNabb and Weal sit in place of Schultz and Nolan/Andreoff against a Sharks team that doesn't have Clowe, Eager, etc anymore. Besides Mike Brown, they are kinda soft.

Usually a point of derision for me, I am shocked at the number of ESPN "experts" that pick the Kings to make the SCF.

Only one picked them to win it, however. Very strange.

Except he was awful on the PP with Doughty. Indecisive, and when he did pull the trigger, everyone knew where the shot was going.

Have to see better ingenuity than that. They had over a minute-and-a-half to practice a 5-on-3 late in the game and it was an absolute gong show.

I went to the bathroom during the 5-on-3 since I'd seen that movie before so I didn't see what happened.

But he looked good earlier, good passes, shots on goal, one timer, movement, straddling the blueline. I guess he hadn't been fully indoctrindated till the 5-on-3
