Interesting post, MrKolice. I'll have to look at it more later.

Drive-by to post today's lines.

I've had a suspicion since last week that Mersch will take Weal's place on the roster.

Reunited!!!!!!

I had a similar conclusion in the lengthy Brown thread, but this year he LOOKS better, too...if you go back and watch some 2012 games (I watched a few last night), he doesn't look significantly different on the ice...to me, imo, the biggest different is net crashing, his shot distance has grown immensely.

i'll check this one soon, it must be important. yea, he looks good, just imagine the moment when those pucks will go in.

So if no trades were to be made at all, do you guys think the Kings will make it far in the playoffs and beat the Hawks?

I made it home and for the first time in a long time i listened to Hockey buzz cast and they said Eklund sent a text that we were interested in Scott Hartnell There were no names attached by Eklund but the cast ( Russ Cohan and Mike Augello ) speculated that we could send clifford or lewis ( mostly clifford because lewis is more important ) zykov and Erik Cernak. I ask why were would he even fit in theory ?

Hartnell and Cam Atkinson are 2 of the names I've heard that the BJ's could move at the deadline to free up cap space. Due to his 4.8M contract, moving Hartnell would required the BJ's to take on a piece from the other team that is being moved for CAP issues but it would have to be less than half of Hartnell's to work. But don't see the Kings as any kind of an interested party, they don't need another winger and esp at that salary. If they move Lewis or Clifford for a forward, it would be to get a 3rd line center, I'd think.
Atkinson for 1.17M will be a great fit for some team's 3rd line ,he has 9 g and 9 a, 18 pts this year and has been pretty good on special teams. Jack Johnson and Matt Calvert were also mentioned as players that might go.

Brown is getting a high volume of low % chances. Look at Toffoli, he hasn't been getting a lot of goals recently, but he's been getting good chances in and around the net. Brown isn't getting high quality opportunities with players/goalie out of position. The problem with the bad luck theory is that the sample size is getting ridiculously large if that was the issue. Brown is predictable when he skates around with the puck. The team defense/goalie is set by the time he shoots. You need a shot like Carter to be able to beat an NHL goalie like that.

Fix: Start hitting and laying guys out. Put a guy or 2 on their ***** and head for the net when the defense is out of position because someone is on the ground. This is about my only hope for Brown producing in the playoffs.

LA would have as good of shot as any team to come out of the west.
The team's defensive depth concerns me, but LA should be getting King back soon which will help a bit.

This exactly!

Slow typing on my part, see the edit.

The Hawks are completely our nemesis and great at nullifying Quick and Kane just has immense games vs. us. I like our chances vs. anyone else, vs. Chicago it's much more of a coin toss (and depends on which Crawford shows up as well). I'm not sure even a trade changes the dynamic in that matchup, it's a systems thing not a personnel thing, some of the battles are epic.

I agree I would like Atkinson, and would be interested in bringing back JMFJ if the price was right.
What do you mean by Atkinson for 1.1? whats' the 1.1

war-on-ice has this useful scf & hscf feature (scoring chances & high-danger scoring chances), but only for "on-ice" set of variables. and brown looks very pretty there this season.

about brown being predictable, i've noticed something along those lines during the games, golies & even opponents forwards seem to be closer to the blue line when he's attacking, kind of "adjusted to brown" strategy. but maybe it's just stats-related as they just don't believe brown will start scoring against them, after such a cold streak. this should also change dramatically after he'll start to score some.

if this is really a "bad luck" period then the trend should start changing soon, before playoffs, it's almost statistically imposible to have a bad run like this for a whole season. and that will be the verdict: or brown starts scoring or his corsi drops. but if both will happen, well, we'll have another enigma to solve.

Going back to the start of the 2013 playoffs, Brown has 37 goals in 236 games. 28 in his last 192 regular season games. 13 in his last 113 games. 2 this year, but one was on a penalty shot. So he's got 1 goal on 92 or 93 shots on net this year, because I don't know if they count penalty shots as shots.

I would agree that he's looked more there though. Like there's a body in the jersey. Richards looked like an empty jersey the last while he was here. Brown sort of looked like that in 13-14, until the playoffs, and then he was better.

Whatever Brown is doing, he's not scoring. There's no reason to think that he'll start either. Those 37 goals in 236 games is an average of 13 in 82. He'll never live up to the contract, and realistically he's not going anywhere. So far, Sutter and Lombardi have managed to figure out ways to keep the team winning despite his low production/high cap hit status. Whatever kind of player Brown is at this point, put him in a position to help as best he can. If it's just throwing the puck at the net and seeing what sticks, it's better than nothing.

Before too long, we might have lines with the 4 left-wings being Lucic, Pearson, King and Mersch. Think about that for a second.

i agree with that. count in his off-ice contribution. he is a C, o captain my captain. we have some talented youngsters struggling to make it. yes, brown is bottom6 now, but whoever plays with him there (and with shore) looks like a much better player, young guys are different persons when they play with him. that's brown today, babysitter with chrome balls and still with something special to show us.

Mayor on Twitter- NHL holiday trade freeze kicks in tmrw. Hearing Kings might make small deal. Had something brewing recently; may opt for minor roster tweak.

saw that too.
I imagine nothing happens before trade freeze..

all of a sudden major deal breaks

with clifford waiting to come back. Looks good to me.
Right side is good too Gaborik, toffoli and brown (overpaid but is a great fit for 3rd line)

I was hoping that fully healthy we'd see

Pearson-Kopitar-Gaborik
Lucic-Carter-Toffoli
Mersch-Shore-Brown
Clifford-Lewis-King

I like this a lot only a minor tweek. I think Lucic with Kopitar and Gaborik and reunite that s 70s line I think Lucic 's toughness is needed with kopitar and gaborik Also no one can deny the chemistry of that 70 line

I don't like where King is. I wold prefer him to be 3rd line LW and Mersch down.

I would imagine it would be interchangeable, but I think the key with Brown is having someone that stands in front of the net. I'd like to see Brown-Lewis-Mersch actually, that's a lot of things thrown at the net in traffic.

It wouldn't stay that way anyways. I'm pretty sure Sutter has dungeon dice and rolls them in between periods for combos.

I have him there because it adds reliable skill and more finish to the 4th line, whereas at this point, I think Mersch would be better on a possession line where he can excel in the corners and in front of the net and be less of a puckcarrier. But they're all very interchangable imo, I like the lineup that way because it's truly insane depth.
