I think he lacks the same offensive ability, but it would be like getting Mike Fisher, at 25 years old (minus some skill).... he'll be a pure 3rd line checking center... where as Mike had the offensive skill to be a 2 way top 6 guy.

I meant it more in terms of acquiring a high-motor center in his mid 20s to play a key role through the rebuild (I'm pretty sure Stoll was also 25 when LA traded him). He's the kind of player that would be an important piece through the rebuild and beyond (albeit in a lesser role then).

Very true. Good comparison

Realistically, who are the PPQB's available at a cheap price and who fit our rebuild... Del Zotto? Gardiner? That's all I can think of.

I'd try to pry Zach Smith away... but everyone knows that. He could be a core piece long term.

I would love this. Reinhart, Hodgson and Smith as this teams top 3 centres would be nice. Unless of course the Sabres land Eichel or McDavid as well, then everything changes lol.

What about Alex Goligoski? We would definitely be buying low - and hoping Nolan can give him the 'Myers' treatment...

To :stars

D Jamie McBain ($1.85M RFA)
2015 3rd RND pick

To :sabres

D Alex Goligoski ($4.6M)

meh. His contract is a wee bit long, I mean, it's not bad per say but I'd rather go for a younger option who isn't called goalsagainstski by his fanbase

Assuming Sulzer and McBain aren't here next year, here is our D going into 2014-15

XXXX-Myers
Ehrhoff-Pysyk
Weber-Ristoleinen
Zadarov

Now, I don't see how Goligoski fits that hole (or McBain). My guess is we sign western NY Native Orpik to give us a bit more sandpaper and leadership on our back end.

He sucks. Dallas should add to that just to get rid of that contract.

I don't see any realistic way that Zadorov is going to be the 7th defenseman here AND Ristolainen makes the team.

If either of them make the team, it'll be as a top 6 guy, and I certainly don't see both here.

My guess is that Risto is here and Zads is back in London for one more year.

Why do we need a powerplay qb? Isn't that one of Ehrhoff strengths? Couldn't Myers grow into the role? Problem could be Sacco is coaching it and it features such snipers as D'agostini, Flynn and John Scott. Green just seems like a very expensive stop gap that would be wasted with our awful forwards, not like Ovechkin is coming with him either. Not that Ovi carried him but having Ovi out there helps.

It's confusing with some people wanting to gut the roster to tank and others want to trade for high priced role players.

Orpik doesn't really fit GMTM's preferred style of D
Why wouldn't McBain be here? He's RFA...they arent going to rush 2 young D in....

I'm not big on the "offensive defenseman", but McBain has grown on me. He's an adventure in the defensive zone but he finds a way to get the job done. He's weak on the puck, but he has a scrappiness to him that i love.

I would do this. I'm certainly not for it, but all indications are that management as well as Nolan really like McBain's game. It's evidenced by the amount of ice time he's getting. They could sign him to a 2 year/4 mil contract. to be a bottom pairing/2nd PP unit type guy through this re-build. I don't mind him either, just wouldn't keep him long term.

hey so I would Love Ott in Ottawa, what would it take to get him? also, if Moulson is upp and we target him instead what would it take to get him? for this discussion I would like the deals separate not together however.

From Ottawa your looking at guys like Wiercioch, Pageau, Petersson, Prince, Hoffman, Gryba and picks in the 2nd to 7th round

Bidding for either will likely get to a 1st from a contender. So I'd think at minimum a 2nd and a Prince

Mainly because I don't think McBain will get qualified at his current salary. He's a bottom pairing specialist....don't really see the need given the volume of young d-men we have who are nearing NHL readiness.

And I get Murray's comment he doesn't like the hulking physical hall gill style d-man....Orpik is more of a Jay McKee style stay at home d-man, where he has the wheels not to get out of position still. I think with the comments about bringing WNYers home, Orpik is right in that wheel house.

And both Zad and Risto are NHL ready now. It isn't rushing them to assume after a year more in the gym they'll be NHL ready. If not them we have McCabe and Rud who can also play.
